Western derby 61: Fremantle at the shortest ever to beat West Coast in predicted one-sided affair

West Australian5 days ago
Fremantle are certainties to beat West Coast in western derby 61.
At least that is according to the bookies who have the Dockers at the shortest odds ever to beat their cross-town rivals the Eagles when they meet at Optus Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
TABTouch has Fremantle at nearly an unbackable $1.03 to get the four points against West Coast, who are paying a whopping $12 to upset the finals-bound Dockers.
The line is also at 50.5 — making this the shortest odds of any team to win a western derby in history, with the line at 42.5 for the second derby in 2022 with the Dockers also favourites. On that day it was a 24-point win to Fremantle.
The two teams could not be more polar opposites when it comes to form.
Fremantle — led by coach Justin Longmuir — have won eight of their past nine games, including away wins over premiership fancies Collingwood, as well as defeating Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney.
It has the Dockers on track to return to finals for the first time since 2022 and a genuine contender for a top-four finish, something they have not accomplished since they won the minor premiership in 2015.
Even the absence of injured skipper Alex Pearce isn't hurting their chances, with midfielders and vice-captains Caleb Serong and Andrew Brayshaw leading the way, with the likes of Jordon Clark, Luke Jackson and Josh Treacy in career-best form.
Meanwhile, the Eagles appeared to have hit rockbottom.
They are on track for a one-win season for the first time in club history, with their only victory this season coming against St Kilda in round 10.
It means coach Andrew McQualter is likely to end his first year with a wooden spoon — a situation the Eagles have only found themselves in twice (2023 and 2010) before in their history.
And while midfield sensation Harley Reid is lighting it up, there are too many senior players sidelined for them to be competitive week-in, week-out.
Co-captain Oscar Allen is out with a knee and calf injury, while last year's All-Australians Jake Waterman (shoulder) and Jeremy McGovern (retired) as well as star midfielder Elliot Yeo (ankle) are also unavailable.
It has led McQualter to lean on a very young team that lost to 17th placed Richmond last weekend by 49 points.
And it means the derby is likely to be a one-sided affair.

Red-hot Hayden Young could be the key for Fremantle Dockers to break Carlton hoodoo

Fremantle are the hottest team in the AFL, but coach Justin Longmuir knows there's still more work to be done if they are to avoid a slip-up against Carlton on Sunday. Despite the two sides' contrasting form, the Blues have been a thorn in the Dockers' side in recent clashes with Fremantle only winning one of their past eight encounters. The teams have not faced each other since the Dockers' infamous after-the-siren loss in Gather Round last year, with their last victory over Carlton coming back in 2022. However, one man who has avoided a downturn against the Blues is Hayden Young, who boasts a remarkably consistent record against them. In his past three clashes against Carlton, Young has recorded 25 touches, well above his career average, in each game to be among the best for his side despite their defeats. But it could be a forward switch that helps Young and Fremantle break their Carlton hoodoo. In just six games this season, Young has already kicked seven goals, more than half the total (13) he managed across his 23 games last season, as the Dockers manage his on-ball minutes by playing him in the midfield and up forward. Young has never troubled the scorers in his previous encounters with the Blues but coach Justin Longmuir says he hopes he can continue to shine in his dual role. 'He has changed our midfield mix, and it's a testament to the work he put in while he was injured,' Longmuir told 7NEWS. 'He's just another big body in there and another player the opposition have to worry about, which takes the pressure off the other two. 'Having a left-footer in there and someone who can use the ball the way he does is obviously a really good weapon. 'We'll continue to mix his time between midfield and forward and hope to see his impact continue in both areas.' The Dockers have won nine of their past 10 games but Longmuir said there was still improvement to find, particularly after they wasted a string of chances to kill the game off earlier against West Coast. 'We wasted some opportunities, especially in those middle quarters, but any time you're generating 40 shots on goal, is a good performance,' he said. 'Our defence held up well and we generated enough opportunities, but there's still some work to do.'

Dockers give nod to the past in Tuesday Retro Round takeover

Fremantle headed back in time on Tuesday, with the entire staff and players showcasing uniforms from the past as they celebrate Retro Round. The Dockers will wear a purple jumper with a white anchor against Carlton on Sunday as a nod to the uniform which was introduced in 2003. But Tuesday was a day for gear from many eras, with development coach Tendai Mzungu rocking a jacket with the old school purple, green and red. Tendai Mzungu gave a nod to the past at training. But he said the players were enjoying the throwback and the jumper. 'It's pretty cool. I wouldn't mind seeing it as the actual jumper. I haven't seen anything like it yet. It'll be cool to wear it,' Reid said. 'It was before my time but you see photos of Pav wearing it but it was a little bit before my time. 'We had a bit of a retro theme going on today. We're keen to put it on and embrace it. All the boys get around it. The media team loves it. They get all of the videos and photos of everyone to see who does it best. It brings a bit of a buzz around.' Tuesday's session was the club's lightest of the week with a focus on recovery but Cooper Simpson showed he could be just as handy with a soccer ball as he is with a footy. Simpson's ability to control the round ball was impressive. Cooper Simpson shows off his soccer skills. Key forward Jye Amiss continues to train by himself during the early week recovery sessions. While his teammates play small games, Amiss is constantly working on his body. Amiss kicked three goals in the western derby in a promising display.
