Airbnb owner told to tear down 'prison-camp watchtower' built in garden

The owner of an Airbnb let in Conwy has been told to tear down a "prison-camp watchtower" built in the garden of the property. The "monstrous" tower was built at the site of the holiday let on Tan y Bryn Road in Rhos on Sea without planning permission in January 2024.
It sparked fury from neighbours, with neighbours saying the structure was blighting their day-to-day lives. JAM Domestic Properties Ltd had submitted a number of retrospective planning applications to retain the "garden room", but these were refused.
Conwy Council has now confirmed they have ordered the structure be removed. A spokesperson said: "An enforcement notice has been served which requires the removal of the structure.' Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service understands the enforcement notice took effect on 17 June, but the developer has 10 weeks from that date to appeal.
Neighbour Nick Whitmore, 35, said his family was thrilled the enforcement notice had been served. Mr Whitmore has lived at his home since 2021 but said the tower had compromised the family's quality of life at their dream home.
He said: "We are looking forward to the structure coming down. It dominates our property and our neighbours. They can't even sit at their breakfast table without it being overlooked, and it is the same for lots of other houses in the locality.
'So we are thrilled they've been served with an enforcement notice and are looking forward to it being pulled down.' He added: 'It will mean we no longer have such a dominating and intrusive structure, which is so overbearing, looking over our garden or our neighbours' gardens.'
A previous planning statement provided by Cadnant Planning in support of the application read: 'Views from the raised platform into neighbouring properties were recognized as being available from the initial planning consent.
'The proposed development is not considered to lead to an acceptable increase to this and is not considered to have a detrimental impact on privacy or residential amenity to neighbouring properties, and therefore would be acceptable on this basis.' They declined to comment on behalf of JAM Domestic Properties in relation to the enforcement notice.

The Spanish government has introduced a new law requiring all landlords offering properties as holiday homes or seasonal lets to register in a new short-term rental registry system designed to monitor them. However, industry insiders have suggested that Brits may choose to purchase holiday homes elsewhere due to these stringent regulations, and tourists may reconsider as prices could potentially skyrocket. ‌ This week, from July 1, landlords face a fine of up to €500,000 if they fail to apply for a new rental code. The new law primarily targets rentals under 60 days, which Spain classifies as "short-term rentals." Rentals longer than 60 days are not impacted by these new restrictions. ‌ Property experts today warned that thousands of short-term rentals, including Airbnb, could be withdrawn from the market. There are fears that the laws could increase prices by up to 20% in popular areas and limit options for holidaymakers who might be forced into hotels instead. They also stated that with "nearly half of the rental applications still stuck in bureaucratic purgatory, thousands of Brits face being locked out of the lucrative short-term market, their properties suddenly unable to earn their keep." A new register will require all properties used for tourism and short-term holiday rentals to have a mandatory registration code to operate legally. Spain's Ministry of Housing has disclosed that a total of 199,686 applications have been submitted so far, predominantly for tourist rentals. Out of these, 90,046 registrations have been given the green light, while 17,596 were turned down. Meanwhile, just over 92,000 registrations are still pending. Pete Mugleston, Mortgage Advisor & Managing Director at Online Mortgage Advisor, said Brits letting out properties will look to Italy, Greece or Portugal instead of Spain. ‌ He continued: "If you're a Brit with a property in Spain that you let out through Airbnb, these changes will have you pulling your hair out. The Spanish authorities are doing this to combat locals being priced out of the housing market, due to the explosion in the short-term rental market in recent years. "This will add another layer of complexity to renting out your property and will more than likely be the final straw for many, as they choose to sell rather than rent. 'The result is that Brits looking to purchase a holiday home abroad to rent out will now turn their attention to other countries, such as Italy, Greece or Portugal, where regulations aren't as strict.' ‌ Tony Redondo, Founder at Cosmos Currency Exchange, said prices could be raised by up to 20% in hotspots due to the law. He added: "Spain's new Airbnb law will delist thousands of short-term rentals. British buy to let owners face income loss when the unlicensed properties are removed. Those who try and register will face higher compliance costs or have to sell. 'Pivoting to mid-term rentals for digital nomads is an option. Reduced short-term rental supply could raise prices by up to 20% in hotspots, pushing tourists to hotels, especially in Barcelona. Other countries with more relaxed short-term rental rules, like Portugal and Italy, will attract investors, boosting tourism and property tax revenue.' ‌ Meanwhile, Pete Mugleston, Mortgage Advisor and Managing Director at Online Mortgage Advisor, predicted that as a result, Brits with holiday lets might switch to Italy, Greece, or Portugal instead. He elaborated: "If you're a Brit with a property in Spain that you let out through Airbnb, these changes will have you pulling your hair out. Oxford city council is planning to introduce a £2-a-night 'tourist tax' for overnight visitors. Guests visiting the ancient university city would have to pay the charge if they stay in a hotel or college room. Officials claimed that the surcharge could generate £2.5 million a year in tax receipts. It is not the first UK city to be considering a tourist tax. Cambridge mulled a £2 nightly surcharge last year before it was forced to abandon the plans following a backlash from hoteliers. Elsewhere, an accommodation business improvement district (ABID) charge is set at £1 a night in Manchester and £2 a night in Liverpool. At a scrutiny committee meeting on Tuesday, councillors heard the tax would be used to 'improve' the city for locals and tourists. AirBnB and self-catering accommodation, which fall outside of the business rate database used under BID legislation, would not have to collect the levy. Diana Fawcett, Oxford council's city centre manager, said: 'It's not really just about our tourists, it's about anybody who uses the city. So whether you live here, whether you work here, whether you're a student here, as well as a tourist, we want to improve that experience.' The council estimates that 32 million people visited the city last year, supporting 40,000 jobs. The proposals follow a series of other controversial revenue-generating policies proposed for the city in recent years. Oxfordshire county council wants it to become the first in Britain to introduce a congestion charge in two decades under plans for a £5 daily charge to access parts of its historic centre. 'Chronic gridlock' Low traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs) in the east of the city have also been made permanent despite a report finding they caused 'chronic gridlock' and 'exasperatingly slow' bus journeys. The council also plans to introduce controversial climate zones, which will ban residents from travelling directly between suburbs at peak times next year. Six traffic filters, described as 'bus gates', will close off arterial roads to cars in an attempt to relieve congestion and promote cycling in a trial that has been postponed by overrunning roadworks near the railway station. Local drivers will be given 100-day annual permits to cross the boundaries – or 25-day permits if they live outside the city – and fined £70 on other days if they do not take a detour onto the ring road. There is also a zero emission zone (ZEZ) in place in the city centre, which charges drivers for using non-compliant vehicles.

A Chicago-area mansion once owned by all-time NBA great Michael Jordan is now listed on Airbnb, offering high-end travelers the chance to vacation like a six-time champion. According to the Airbnb listing, Champions Point is a seven-bedroom, 17.5-bath estate on 7.39 acres that can accommodate 14 guests. The home, in Highland Park, Illinois, has a stunning price tag and requires a minimum seven-night stay. For example, a weeklong respite over Labor Day weekend, checking in on Aug. 29 and out on Sept. 5, would cost $120,920. The mansion features a movie theater, commercial gym, cigar lounge, wine cellar, pool tables, bars, salon, saltwater aquariums and — of course — a full-size basketball court. 'This estate was built with privacy, security, and luxury in mind — a private oasis on 7.39 acres surrounded by mature pines, fenced and gated,' according to the listing. The property was purchased by real estate investor John Cooper for $9.5 million late last year. The Airbnb listing says the house is 'Hosted by John.' The owner did not immediately respond to a request for comment. 'Enjoy putting on your professional-grade putting green, fishing in your private pond stocked with bass and bluegill, and swimming in your zero-entry infinity edge pool.' The property is about 27 miles north of the United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls and once the workplace of NBA icon Michael Jordan. He led the Bulls to six world titles in a pair of three-peats, 1991-93 and 1996-98. Jordan's 41,010 career regular-season points are fifth all-time, trailing only LeBron James, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone and the late Kobe Bryant.
