Grove City wrestling ends 72-year drought in historic season

'Whenever you have really good kids that compete the right way and the act the right way, I think that just has a really positive impact on that youth program,' said Phipps.
Five Eagles qualified for the 2025 PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships in Hershey at the GIANT Center in early March.
'Right now, the cool thing to do in Grove City is to be a wrestler and to go chase state titles and and state medals,' said Phipps.
The Eagles sent five wrestlers to states this season which broke the previous record of four state qualifiers.
'It's probably been the most successful season we've had in winning tournaments,' said Phipps.
Grove City took fourth place in the State with four wrestlers earning individual medals. Four wrestlers bringing home medals is now a record for the most medals in school history.
Freshman Chase Karenbauer took third place in the 107 Weight Class.
Freshman Ian Sterns got on the podium at eighth place in the 114 Weight Class.
Junior Hudson Hohman was the state runner-up in the 145 Weight Class.
Senior Cody Hamilton earned sixth place in the 152 Weight Class.
The Eagles made school history with a District 10 Region 1 title, the first conference championship in 72 years. The Eagles shared the conference title with Reynolds and Hickory.
Senior Cody Hamilton now has the all-time record in wins at Grove City with 157. He beat out Coach Phipps who held the record for 13 years after he graduated from Grove City.
'It was pretty cool it kind of felt like passing the torch to me, it was all good vibes,' said Hamilton. 'But this is especially cool knowing that my record is not going to last long at all. It's going to be broken most likely next year, and then the following year it can be broken.'
Hamilton held the single-season record for wins but the record was broken twice by two of his teammates this season.
'That's probably one of the best feelings showing them that it's possible,' said Hamilton. 'If I can do it, they can do it too. They're already all catching up to me.'
The Grove City wrestler now boasts three state medals, three Region Titles, three District Titles, and two Section Titles.
'I hope everyone just remembers me as a positive, hardworking guy,' said Hamilton. 'I always try to bring a positive attitude into the room, even when wrestling gets super hard. I always just try to find the things that make you happy.'
Hamilton will continue his wrestling and academic careers at Clarion University.
'It just makes me super happy knowing that all the hard work I put in wasn't for nothing,' said Hamilton. 'It worked out for me.'
Coach Phipps said Hamilton will graduate as one of the most decorated wrestlers in Grove City's history.
The Eagles ended this season with an overall record of (14-6) and (5-1) in league play.

Reed Blankenship is one of the biggest names on the list, and the defense could look drastically different with Nakobe Dean entering the final year of his rookie deal. With Week 2 of training camp set to begin, we're previewing the 33 Eagles who'll be free agents next spring. CB Tariq Castro-Fields- RFA OL Darian Kinnard-RFA FB/LB Ben VanSumeren- RFA VanSumeren had carved out a role as the Eagles' fullback, reserve linebacker, and special-teams standout. Still, his season ended after the second-year sensation suffered a knee injury during a Friday practice. VanSumeren did not play a single snap on defense last season; he has carved out a role as a fullback on the offensive side of the ball. He's also a major special-teams contributor, having played 12 offensive snaps last season and 153 on special teams. DB Lewis Cine-RFA Cine was selected by Minnesota 32nd overall in the 2022 draft and joined the Bills' practice squad after being released by the Vikings last summer. He broke his leg during his rookie season and was limited to playing 10 defensive snaps in 10 games over his two years in Minnesota. The 24-year-old from Haiti is listed at 6-foot-2 and 199 pounds and is a low-risk signing, having had a decorated college career at Georgia. Cine earned defensive MVP honors in Georgia's 33-18 win over Alabama in the national championship game in the 2021 season. OLB Josh Uche-Void The young pass rusher struggled over the past two seasons but was named an underrated pass rusher by PFF entering 2025 NFL free agency. DT Thomas Booker-RFA CB Eli Ricks-RFA Eli Ricks will move up the Eagles' depth chart after a season spent watching and continuing to learn his craft. He could also be trade bait because Ricks is 23 years old, plays with great length, and has had incredible mentors in Darius Slay and James Bradberry. OL Kenyon Green-UFA Green is entering the last year of his rookie deal at a $2.88 million salary. Green started 14 of 15 games as a rookie but was the 77th-highest-graded guard (37.7) out of 77 players in Pro Football Focus rankings that year. Last season, Green was one of the lowest-graded offensive guards in the NFL. LS Charley Hughlett-UFA RB A.J. Dillon-UFA Dillon signed a one-year deal with Philadelphia after missing last season with a neck injury. LB Nakobe Dean-UFA Nakobe Dean earned All-Pro votes with his performance this season. Now, the Eagles linebacker will work to rehab from a torn patellar tendon he suffered in the NFC Wild Card win over Green Bay. Ian Rapoport reports that Dean could miss part of the 2025 season while rehabbing. He's entering the final year of his deal. OLB Patrick Johnson-UFA WR/KR Avery Williams- UFA TE Harrison Bryant- UFA CB Parry Nickerson- UFA TE Nick Muse- UFA TE Grant Calcaterra- UFA A player who could benefit the most from a Goedert departure, Calcaterra finished his third professional season with career highs in catches (24), yards (298), and touchdowns (one). TE Dallas Goedert- Void Goedert is set to enter the final year of his deal. Last season, Goedert played in 10 games, logging 42 receptions for 496 yards, averaging 11.8 yards per catch, and two scores. He led the team in receptions (17) and receiving yards (215) during their Super Bowl run in the postseason. Goedert is a warrior, and when he's healthy, the talented pass catcher is one of the top tight ends in the NFL. Goedert is 30 years old, and like Zach Ertz before him, the Eagles could be preparing for an exit strategy as they work to get younger at the position. WR Jahan Dotson- Void Dotson had his fifth-year option declined, and he'll be playing for a contract. Azeez Ojulari-Void The 24-year-old made the most of his return to the starting lineup with five sacks in three games. He's an intriguing free agent and someone who could have a Zack Baun-like impact on the defense. DB Reed Blankenship- Void Blankenship logged 78 tackles (52 solo), six pass defenses (including four interceptions), and one fumble recovery during 15 regular-season games in 2024. He added 27 tackles (18 solo), one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery across the Eagles' four playoff games. Blankenship earned a one-year, $3.58 million contract extension with the Eagles last April after leading the team in tackles and interceptions. He saw his tackling numbers dip in the regular season and finished third behind Zack Baun (151) and Nakobe Dean (128), but Blankenship finished as the Eagles' second-leading tackler during the postseason behind Dean (33). Blankenship could be in line for another, more sizable contract extension heading into the 2025 campaign. DB Tristin McCollum -- ERFA McCollum logged 33 tackles (18 solo) and two pass defenses in 14 regular-season appearances in 2024. Jeremiah Trotter Jr views pressure as a route to new opportunities with the Eagles
New responsibilities and Eagles injuries could crack the door for Jeremiah Trotter. We're entering year two of our discussions about nepotism and the Philadelphia Eagles' roster. Earlier this offseason, it was reported that there might be team interest in Asante Samuel Jr., but so far, the rumors have not led to any real action. That said, it seems more constructive to discuss a franchise legend's son who is already on the roster. It feels damn good to see the number 54 jersey on defense and know it belongs to Jeremiah Trotter Jr. This is Junior Axe Man. To most, he needs no introduction. His father was a big deal in midnight green. How fitting is it that his young lad was a proud member of Philadelphia's 2024 NFL Draft class? Some of us met him when we saw Dad holding him in his arms. The rest of the contingent may have met him during a successful run with the Clemson Tigers. Trotter Jr. enters his second Eagles training camp. Things seem to be going well. He appears to be making progress and has taken on a new responsibility that should provide him with more experience. That should benefit him as he walks into another regular season. There is also the injury to Nakobe Dean. He opens camp on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list. After spending most of his rookie season contributing primarily on special teams, Trotter could see more meaningful snaps during games that count, but no one knows what that may look like at this point. Jeremiah Trotter Jr. adds to his palette at Eagles practice Jeremiah Trotter Sr. never won a Super Bowl with the Birds, though he did secure preferred seating at both victory parades. The younger Jeremiah Trotter won football's biggest game during his inaugural NFL season. He played primarily on special teams. One of the questions now is whether he will do so again this season. Most expected that, when he was drafted, 'Junior' would back up Nakobe Dean. No one expected, at that time, that Zack Baun would morph into a First-Team All-Pro. Thank Heaven that he did. It's always great to have as many great players on the roster as possible, but that shoved Trot Jr. further down the depth chart. Then came the selection of Jihaad Campbell during the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. That seemingly clouded Trotter's picture even further. It would have seen that he would have tumbled down the depth chart had it not been for injury concerns surrounding Campbell and Dean entering Eagles training camp. Everyone has been in the mix. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has added to the mix of first- and second-year stars. Campbell has gotten snaps with the defense's first team. Trotter has been splitting play-calling duties with Zack Baun during training camp. Both may see significant roles. No one is 100% certain of what those roles are yet, not even Vic Fangio. Thankfully, none of us has to perform the balancing acts.
