Gen Z and millennials are thirsty for luxury bag dupes. Here are the brands they're after most.

Content about luxury bag "dupes" — or similar products at a more affordable price point — surged on social media in April, according to a new report, with users looking for alternatives to some famous brands more than others.
The recent report from Plot, a management platform for social media teams, found posts about luxury bag dupes increased tenfold between February and April this year. Plot used an AI tool to analyze 1,718 videos on TikTok and Instagram that mentioned luxury bag dupes or similar terms, like replicas or fakes, as well as more than 1,200 user comments.
Plot's report said Gen Z tends to have a more positive association with dupes than millennials, who also seek out dupes but are more critical of dupe culture. The term "dupes" generally refers to comparable alternatives to a specific product, while calling something a "fake" typically means a product is trying to pass itself off as the original version.
For both millennials and Gen Z, Plot found there were two brands for which dupes were discussed the most: first, Louis Vuitton, and second, Hermes.
BI previously reported that Hermes, famous for its Birkin bag, and Louis Vuitton were the two luxury bag brands most likely to be faked, according to The RealReal.
For Gen Z, the next most commonly discussed luxury bag dupes were for Chanel, which was discussed as much as Hermes, followed by Coach and Gucci, the Plot analysis found. For millennials, it was Gucci and Chanel. The brands didn't respond to Business Insider's request for comment.
Dupes are especially popular with Gen Z, who often share alternatives to pricey products on social media. A Business Insider and YouGov survey conducted in 2023 found that 70% of Gen Z respondents said they sometimes or always buy less expensive knock-offs of brand-name products.
Susan Scafidi, director of the Fashion Law Institute at Fordham Law School, recently told Vogue Business that the word dupe is being used in place of more negative terms, like copycat or knock-off.
"Not coincidentally, some younger consumers in particular have come to view dupes as a sign of shopping savvy, indicating that the buyer has the sartorial knowledge to recognise the original but the financial cleverness to buy the copy instead," she said.

Triangle real estate in 2025: What today's buyers want and how sellers can win

The COVID-19 pandemic housing rush may seem like it wasn't that long ago, but its influence on today's housing market lingers. As home sales soared between 2020 and 2023, sellers often received multiple offers — many significantly over asking price — which has reshaped the market today. Yet the market isn't the same as it was during the pandemic. While the main driver of demand — the need for homes and lack of inventory — is still the lead story in the current market, some circumstances have changed. What hasn't changed is the need for inventory. The number of homes on the market is still low. A normal market has between four to six months of inventory available for the region. Yet in May, the Triangle's inventory of homes was just under three months' supply. Still, there are more homes available on the market — currently over 10,000 homes — than there have been in the past several years. This shows things are trending toward normalization in the Triangle, albeit slowly. With too few homes available, demand is still high, and homes stayed on the market for an average of 20 days in May. This number shows there's still high demand, and the average is expected to lower as the peak summer selling season hits. The biggest circumstance that's changed is how sellers can remain competitive in the market. Resell homes sell fast today when sellers find ways to stand out, and when sellers understand what buyers are willing to pay for in today's market. interactive Home Watch map. What buyers want in a home According to the 2025 Home Buyers and Sellers Generational Trends Report from the National Association of Realtors (NAR), buyers are purchasing homes in 2025 for specific reasons. For most buyers under the age of 59, including Gen Z, millennials and Gen X, the largest reason is to own a home of their own. For older buyers, they are buying to be closer to friends and family, or to downsize. When comparing resale versus new construction, most buyers purchased resale homes for specific reasons as well. Buyers largely view resale homes as offering a better overall value and price than new construction, and they believe these homes offer more charm and character, too. In addition, buyers were largely unwilling to make compromises on what they wanted in a home. A large driver of new construction was many buyers wanted to avoid major renovations or issues with electricity or plumbing. Finally, data from the same NAR report shows that buyers are largely paying the asking price for homes they purchase. These homes are listed on the market for less than a month, and there hasn't been a drop in asking price to create more demand. That means sellers can get a fair price if the home is appropriately priced and ready for move-in. If you're considering selling your home, it's important to take the time to prep a home before listing it. That means making small repairs or updates that might be considered a must-have in their new home. Buyers want homes that are in good condition, and that means taking the time to prep the home for sale. Minor tweaks and updates, painting and decluttering can go a long way toward ensuring you get the best offer for your home. Work with an experienced real estate agent The final key to selling is to work with an experienced real estate agent who has a solid pulse on the market. Before you hire an agent, do your research to see how experienced they are, the type of marketing they're doing and whether they are actively using social media to sell homes. Interview any agent you're considering working with to see if you click with the person. And be sure to ask for references that you can follow up with. The right agent will put you at ease through the selling process. For example, because of the prominence of new construction in the Triangle, your agent should be able to provide creative insights on how to get competitive in a market where builders are offering incentives for purchases. An experienced agent will also be able to provide you with insights about what you may need to do to get your home prepped before it's listed. Finally, a good agent will know how to price your home to sell, so that when it hits the market, it is attractive to potential buyers. And the right agent will have marketing recommendations in place, which should include a digital marketing strategy. The NAR report shows that digital methods such as websites, virtual tours, social media and digital ads are the most popular methods for searching for a new home. Your agent should have a plan for marketing your home within the digital landscape.

Gen Z Side Hustles: 5 Ways To Turn Them Into Six-Figure Salary Careers

The side hustle has been a vehicle for Gen Z to reclaim financial agency, but a new wave is turning ... More that hustle into long-term wealth through investing, in some cases into six-figure salaries. Side hustles are becoming the new normal in 2025, allowing workers to make extra money to keep their heads above financial waters. A notable 71% of the workforce is searching for side hustles or second jobs with another employer. And nearly 40% of Gen Z employees maintain side gigs, not out of passion, but as a necessary means to pay their bills. And many are turning their Gen Z side hustles into six-figure salaries. The Basics Of Gen Z Side Hustles and Long-Term Wealth Saddled with student debt, rising rent, and the cost of everyday essentials, Gen Z feels the best way to stay financially afloat is a second or third job. And in so doing, they're raising the bar for successful side hustles. Andy Kurtzig, CEO of calls it a generational pivot in real time. These 'solopreneurs,' as he calls them, are taking the same tools corporations use to eliminate jobs and flipping the script to create opportunities for themselves. 'They're using AI to re-imagine career paths, build brands and monetize skills that traditional workplaces often overlook," Kurtzig explains. "What used to take funding, mentorship and institutional access, they're now doing with a laptop and a chatbot.' Alinea Invest co-founders and co-CEOs, Eve Halimi and Anam Lakhani (Gen Z'ers themselves and Forbes 30U30), want their generation to understand that investing is the side hustle they've been looking for, and it's the way to build real wealth, not just extra pocket money. They built their business so that it checks all three of these boxes: Halimi and Lakhani told me by email that they believe the Gen Z side hustle era has been about reclaiming financial agency. But they envision the next wave as turning that hustle into long-term wealth through investing. The co-creators insist that the goal is about smarter money, not more hours worked. They announce that they're building a future where financial freedom doesn't require a side gig but simply access and a little support. Tips To Turn Gen Z Side Hustles Into Long-Term Wealth The duo shared five actionable steps you can take to turn an investment-focused side hustle into a six-figure opportunity: 1. Start with what you've got, even $5. "You don't need to be rich to start building wealth, you just need to start," the collaborators insist. 'With fractional investing, you can own a piece of Nike, Bumble, Amazon, Tesla or the companies shaping the future for less than the price of your coffee." They advise whether you're a student or just starting your first job, early investments gives your money time to grow, and that compound growth could mean retiring as a millionaire. 2. Use technology to personalize your portfolio. You don't need to spend hours researching which stock is best for you, according to Halimi and Lakhani. They contend that today's investment apps offer personalized portfolios based on your income, age and risk tolerance. Plus, they offer AI-powered recommendations, so your portfolio reflects not just what performs well but what matters to you, whether that's supporting sustainable companies or women-led businesses. 3. Automate your hustle. The twosome explains that side gigs require time, but investing doesn't have to. They say you can establish automated recurring deposits and let technology handle portfolio optimization and re-balancing. 'It's passive income with compound power. Instead of more hours worked, it's about smarter money moves,' They state. 'This strategy, called Dollar Cost Averaging, means you spend time in the market instead of timing the market. If you invest $160 monthly, you could have over $1M in the next 40 years, based on past performance of the S&P 500.' 4. Make sure your money matches your values. The co-founders point out that Gen Z is a values-driven generation, choosing to work and invest their time, money and energy into what matters to them. 'Whether it's climate action, racial justice or women-led innovation, your investments should fit your priorities,' they note. 'When your portfolio reflects your passions, you're more likely to stick with it, stay engaged and grow it consistently over time.' 5. Invest socially, not solo. Health-building doesn't have to be lonely. In fact, they argue, it shouldn't be. 'Learning and growing together is a game-changer. Look for investment communities where you can share strategies, learn from others' experiences and stay motivated,' they advise. 'Many platforms, like Alinea, now offer social features like shareable portfolios, educational workshops and communities where members celebrate wins together. When investing becomes social, rather than solitary, you're more likely to stay consistent and reach your goal of turning your Gen Z side hustle into a profitable full-time business.' A Final Wrap On Gen Z Side Hustles Adam Nasli, head analyst from brokerage and forex broker at BrokerChooser shares ten points to keep from making investment mistakes. He advises that you: 1. Do your research. Build a foundation that helps you make smarter choices if you focus on trusted sources and use tools that compare brokers and investment products. 2. Set clear investment goals. Set realistic goals as a foundation of successful investing. 3. Pay attention to fees and costs. Prioritize low-cost brokers and funds to keep more gains. 4. Diversify your portfolio. Refrain from putting all your eggs in one basket to manage risk. 5. Pick the right time. Avoid trying to predict market moves, the biggest mistake you can make."Time in the market beats timing the market every time,' he points out. 6. Avoid over trading and excessive activity. Set a clear investment plan instead of constantly tinkering and review your portfolio at regular intervals, making changes only when necessary. 7. Understand investment products. Avoid complex financial instruments that carry hidden risks and stick to simpler investments until you gain experience. 8. Don't neglect tax implications. Plan with tax in mind and learn local tax rules so you don't lose money unnecessarily. 9. Refrain from letting emotions drive decisions. Use discipline and planning and avoid emotional investing or knee-jerk reactions. 10. Use the Right Broker. Pick the right broker to make investing easier and more enjoyable, especially if you're a beginner. Those who follow these guidelines could turn their Gen Z side hustles into a six-figure salary and even potentially make you a millionaire, according to the experts.

Out with Task Masking, In with Authentic Workplaces

Gen Z is adopting the trend of task masking. Here's how managers can effectively respond. What is task masking, exactly? Well, if you're at a loss, you're not alone. It took me about an hour to even skim the surface and figure out how this new movement is impacting the modern workplace. And let me tell you, it's becoming quite popular, especially among Gen Z. In fact, according to a recent article by Fortune, there's an entire TikTok feed that provides tons of advice to employees on how to look busy without even breaking a sweat. So, how did this become the new norm? Some believe that the return-to-office mandate had a significant impact on it. But who's to say exactly? That fact is, if you do any research on task masking, you come back with numerous possibilities behind this growing trend. Some suggest that it's nothing more than a stance of rebellion by angry workers. Others, like Gabrielle Judge, known on TikTok as Anti Work Girlboss, believe that task masking is nothing more than strategic disengagement, where people disengage because it doesn't move the career needle forward. In short, Judge, unlike many critics, views this trend as a positive development because, from her perspective, it exposes inefficiencies within a business. Why Is Gen Z Embracing This Trend? So, who has it right? Is Gen Z trying to prove the inefficiency of in-person workplaces, or are they simply refusing to be bothered with their job? The opinions on this topic are endless, but here are my two thoughts on why I think Gen Z is leaning toward task masking. It's essential to remember that when Gen Z entered the workforce, they were accustomed to conducting everything online. Many of them from this generation had little to no in-person interaction during their last few years of high school. So, for some, the idea of spending 8 hours in an office space was overwhelming and, in their mind, a massive waste of time. Think about it: for years, they were independent learners. They had to figure out how to navigate a global pandemic while working from isolation. Now, for many of us, this would seem like torture. And perhaps that's why older generations, compared to younger ones, are so set on getting back to normal and returning to the office. But we need to ask ourselves two questions: Another significant factor contributing to the increase in task masking is the rise of constant burnout for this generation. According to a Gallup study, 68% of Gen Z and young Millennials reported feeling stressed. Over half of an entire generation in their 20s is already feeling high levels of stress. And why wouldn't they? As the increase in AI integration, the scarcity of entry-level work, and the looming insecurity of tariffs and trade talks take their toll, Gen Z is exhausted and overwhelmed. Task masking may be their way of dealing with everything. Perhaps it's even their way of coping through escapism. How Can Managers Tackle Task Masking? The first step is to determine how this issue actually affects your business or if it has any impact at all. Here's what I mean. Let's say you lead a group of tech-savvy Gen Zers who are loyal to your company, love your product, and would go above and beyond to exceed expectations. These employees are incredible when it comes to innovation and product design, but keeping them confined to their cubicles from 9 to 5 feels like a lost cause. To the untrained eye, this appears to be an issue. After all, how do you know that your workers are being productive during the day? Are they scrolling through TikTok, or are they putting in a full day's work? Well, you have a few options here. Remember, task masking exists because employees feel compelled to hide the fact that they are struggling. So, if your team needs a break, give them the space they need. And create a workplace where Gen Z can feel a sense of belonging. Because, as long as goals are being met, let them bring in a coffee cart, break out some Dungeons and Dragons, and scroll to their heart's content.
