Kenya athletics trials under shadow of Chepngetich suspension

eNCA3 days ago
Kenya held trials for the World Athletics Championships on Tuesday under the cloud of renewed doping concerns after women's marathon world record holder Ruth Chepngetich was provisionally suspended last week.
Chepngetich, 30, tested positive for the banned diuretic hydrochlorothiazide on March 14, according to the Athletics Integrity Unit.
It threatens to destroy a career that has seen her win the 2019 world marathon title in Doha and set the marathon world record in Chicago last October at 2hr 09min 56sec, making her the first woman to run the distance under 2hr 10min.
Her case has also cast a shadow over Kenya's preparation for the World Championships in Tokyo from September 13 to 25.
Few in the Kenyan sports community have been willing to talk about the case.
"It has increased suspicions that it is still a big issue. The authorities still have a lot more to do in the fight against doping," a former Kenyan world champion, who requested anonymity, told AFP.
Kenya has invested massively to clean up its image after a string of doping scandals around the 2016 Rio Olympics led to it being declared non-compliant by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
Nearly 130 Kenyan athletes, mainly long-distance runners, have been sanctioned for drugs offences since 2017, and Kenya has put in place a $25 million, five-year programme to attempt to combat the problem.
In June 2024, Kenya handed out its first lifetime ban to marathon runner Beatrice Toroitich and a six-year ban to 10km record-holder Rhonex Kipruto.
Kenyan sports lawyer Sarah Ochwada said Kenya has made significant strides.
"Anti-doping is a complex system. It is a mix of bio-chemistry and medico-legal regulations," said Ochwada, who has represented several athletes suspended for doping including Rita Jeptoo, Ferdinand Omanyala, and Mark Otieno.
"With more testing, the system is likely to catch both inadvertent and intentional anti-doping rule violators," she said, adding that it was up to Kenyan athletes to take "destiny into their own hands" and make sure they don't accidentally break the rules.
Diuretics are banned because they can be used to rapidly lose weight or to flush out signs of performance-enhancing drugs.
Athletics Kenya still has high hopes of success at the World Championships 10 years after it stunned the world by claiming the overall title for the first time in Beijing with seven golds, six silvers and three bronzes.
Among the athletes expected to shine on Tuesday include rising 1,500m star Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech, the 18-year-old who upset Britain's reigning world champion Josh Kerr at the London Diamond League on Saturday.

Ballito obstacle course racer ready for international challenge

Ballito's Aristo Nolan is heading to Sweden to represent South Africa at the 2025 Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) World Championships. Organised by Swedish Athletics in collaboration with Tough Viking, the championship will take place in Gothenburg from September 11 to 14, drawing elite athletes from 140 nations. Competitors will tackle challenging terrain and endurance-testing obstacles. Nolan (28), a seasoned athlete and founder of Taurus Performance, earned his place on the South African national team after three years of dedicated training and regular podium finishes at elite competitions. 'I've always loved trail and cross country running but needed something more challenging. So, OCR was right up my alley,' he said. The former amateur rugby player will take on two events: The 3km elite short course featuring roughly 20 obstacles and the 12km standard course with around 40 obstacles. 'This is more than a race,' said Nolan, who also serves as Head of Strength and Conditioning at Umhlali Preparatory School. 'It's a chance to make our country and community proud.' Beyond his athletic achievements, Nolan is a qualified sports scientist and mentor, known for his commitment to youth development through sport. He also coaches the Ballito Dolphins rugby teams and continues to inspire the next generation of athletes locally and beyond. Nolan credited his sponsors for making this journey possible, including Rewilding Southern Africa, Taurus Performance, Yowie Fitness and On The Move. 'These brands have gone above and beyond to support my journey. Their belief in me and in this sport means everything.' Training across Sugar Rush Park's rugged tracks, Holla Trails' varied terrain and The Training Ground at Linc has provided the ideal OCR preparation. 'These spaces are my training home,' said Nolan. 'Every sprint, every grip rep and every lift has been part of a bigger goal.' 'I am going to give it my all, physically, mentally and emotionally. Representing South Africa is an honour, and I will be leaving it all out there in Sweden.' Stay in the loop with The North Coast Courier on Facebook, X, Instagram & YouTube for the latest news. There is method to Liverpool's £300m Premier League spending spree madness

Florian Wirtz signs for Liverpool, the most expensive signing in Premier League History at a record-breaking £116m. Picture: AFP Image: AFP Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was well-documented during his time at Anfield about his resistance to spending large sums of money on transfer fees. Klopp was famously quoted as saying: 'If you bring one player in for $100 million or whatever and he gets injured then it all goes through the chimney." 'The day that this is football, I'm not in a job anymore.' Klopp, of course, is no longer in the hot seat at the Reds, but even he's needed to change his tune as the Premier League champions have blown away their competitors during the current transfer window with a host of big-money signings, most notably Florian Wirtz. The German international cost Liverpool an initial £100 million, topped up by a further £16 million in potential add-ons, which makes Wirtz's total package not only the most expensive player in Liverpool history, but the Premier League's priciest ever player too. 'I know that I once said that I'm out if we pay £100 million for a player. But the world is changing. That's just the way the market is. There's no question about it, it's an insane sum.' Wirtz's capture is, though, only the headline-grabber in Liverpool's almost £300m spending spree that is the envy of their Premier League rivals at the moment. The imminent arrival of Hugo Ekitiké from Eintracht Frankfurt for £79m is further testament to the Fenway Sports Group's, Liverpool's Boston-based owner, ambitions to ensure last season's Premiership triumph is not a mere once-off, and is in fact the springboard to sustained success that Manchester City had achieved with their four successive titles in the preceding years. Liverpool's buying power has, of course, got tongues wagging on the social media channels with rival clubs' fans accusing the Reds of abandoning their club's traditions of buying smartly and building a cohesive unit into a championship-winning team. Nothing could be further from the truth as the rejuvenation of the squad under Arne Slot is fundamentally how Liverpool have always done business: self-sustainable. Even under Klopp, Liverpool brought the likes of Alisson (£66.8 million) and Virgil van Dijk (£75 million) to Anfield with the proceeds of Philippe Coutinho's £142m sale to Barcelona. Memories are short in football, and even shorter when the facts interfere with the narrative being projected that Liverpool have become the new Chelsea. There were no new arrivals in the red half of Merseyside for the past two January transfer windows of 2024 and 2025. Furthermore, in an almost unprecedented set of circumstances, new manager Slot spent just £10m on Juventus' Federico Chiesa - the sole player brought in last summer - ahead of his first season at Liverpool. That's notwithstanding the profits from the exits at Liverpool last season. There could possibly be further departures during this transfer window with Luiz Diaz speculated to be moving on for a base asking price of £86.8m, while Darwin Núñez (£55m), Harvey Elliott (£40m-plus), Chiesa (£10m) and Tyler Morton (£15m) are also on the radars of opposing clubs. Should any of these come to fruition, the Boston accountants' margins will only increase. Liverpool are not just leading on the pitch, but are showing their rivals the "Moneyball" blueprint on how to be successful off it too, which could just yet be the foundation of a Reds dynasty that could dominate English football for years to come.
