Blaenavon Heritage Centre bank holiday opening questioned
The Blaenavon Heritage Centre, which is a visitor centre for those visiting the Blaenavon World Heritage Site, a designation granted by United Nations cultural body UNESCO in recognition of the area's central role in the industrial revolution, is closed on Monday. It would open on Bank Holiday Mondays but Janet Jones, an independent borough councillor who represents the town, told Torfaen council's July meeting 'even this has changed over the past months'. She asked if budget cuts have forced the Monday closures and said: 'As we are trying to encourage more tourists to visit Torfaen's iconic landscapes why does this facility which is an information centre remain closed? I can probably accept early closure during the winter months but not in what is technically the tourist season from Easter to the end of October. Is the centre closed at a result of budget restraints?' Council leader, Labour's Anthony Hunt, said Cllr Jones was 'right to question' the centre's closure on bank holiday Mondays as it 'attracts tourists and helps build footfall' but said it wasn't due to budget cuts. Cllr Hunt said: 'Recent experience has demonstrated visitor numbers have been low when the centre has been open on bank holiday Mondays. Our staff are not contracted to work on Mondays and the centre not being open is due to practical and pragmatic reasons and not due to budget constraints.' The Panteg councillor said officers are currently reviewing the centre's operations including opening hours and bank holiday and said Blaenavon councillors would be kept informed.

£36m Perthshire recreation centre is delayed again
Mid-July estimate for handover of new Blairgowrie Recreation Centre to Perth and Kinross Council was not met. The long-awaited handover of Blairgowrie's new £36m recreation centre to Perth and Kinross Council has been delayed. It is the latest in a series of setbacks surrounding the state-of-the-art facility, which was expected to open in December last year. Leaks were discovered after its swimming pool - which has a moveable floor - was filled with water. Contractors spent months working to resolve the issue. Building work on replacing Blairgowrie Recreation Centre began in June 2023 - after years of delays blamed on Brexit, the Covid pandemic and market volatility caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Councillors were told by PKC property chief Stephen Crawford earlier this year that the delays were 'not acceptable' . He also said in June: 'The pool is now full and we're working through commissioning of the centre — hopefully to get handover mid-July.' But this week a PKC councillor said the delay again relates to continuing issues with leaks. Blairgowrie and Glens Conservative councillor Bob Brawn told the PA this week: 'It is my understanding that we are close to handover for the new recreation centre. 'After so many years of preparation, design and finally building, it is frustrating that we've had delays at the last minute. 'This relates to a leaking pool liner. 'However, PKC cannot take on the facility until it's in full order which is all we're waiting for. 'The pool has a moving floor which understandably is of complicated design and any problems would not necessarily be unexpected. All being well, these may well be behind us. 'As a result, the proposed phase two demolition of the existing building will be delayed just to ensure all is well in the new one.' Blairgowrie and Glens SNP councillor Tom McEwan said he understood final legal and practical details are currently being sorted out with an announcement on the opening expected very soon. At a council meeting in April Conservative councillor Caroline Shiers called for a clear timeline and said: 'We were heading for a post-Christmas opening and then we were going to go and work off our Easter eggs and now we're looking at maybe it's our summer bodies we'll be working on. 'I think the community has been very, very patient and that has been appreciated but an indication of a projected handover and then opening time would be helpful.' Work on the replacement centre got underway in June 2023 after the project was continually held up. It was agreed that the centre would open early 2025 to avoid disruption to Blairgowrie High School's prelim timetable with pupils sitting exams there both before and after the Christmas holidays. As well as the swimming pool the new centre has a four-court sports hall, two-court sports hall/gymnasium, fitness suite; dance studio, changing facilities, PE classroom, office and a floodlit synthetic outdoor pitch. It has been hailed as being Scotland's first leisure centre to be built to environmentally-friendly Passivhaus standards, for the use of both Blairgowrie High School and the wider community. Earlier this year PKC leader Grant Laing — who described the catalogue of delays as 'extremely frustrating' — asked PKC's scrutiny and performance committee to carry out a review of the issues which led to the delays. A Perth and Kinross Council spokesperson told the PA this week that the 'mid-July' assurance was 'not a firm date' and added: 'We will announce the opening date in due course.'

‘Incredible' fast food chain from Australia to open 100 new UK stores
It's been called 'the best Mexican on the market' – and now this Aussie-born favourite is planning to take over the UK. The popular fast food chain Zambrero, known for its customisable burritos and burrito bowls, is set to open 100 new UK restaurants by 2030. The Mexican-inspired chain first launched in London in 2021 and has since expanded to 13 locations, including Manchester, Birmingham, Essex and Reading. But it's not stopping there. Zambrero has confirmed more UK sites are on the way next year, including its very first Scottish location. 'We've had a lot of interest in the brand during the last couple of years – and now is the right time for us to expand through our franchise partners and work towards opening 100 restaurants by 2030,' Emily Teh, CEO of Zambrero UK, said. So, what's on the Zambrero menu? Customers can build their own burritos and bowls, nachos and quesadillas from a range of fillings, including pulled pork, chicken, cauliflower and spicy black rice, with salsa, cheese, sour cream and guacamole to top it off. Prices start from around £10 for a small burrito or burrito bowl, with larger sizes coming in closer to around £13. It'll also cost you extra for chips and guac, and churros. Zambrero is probably best known for its burritos and burrito bowls, and some customers have called them the best around. One reviewer raved on TikTok about the Manchester location, calling it 'incredible' and claiming it had 'the best burrito in town'. Founded in Canberra, Australia, in 2005, Zambrero has become the largest Mexican restaurant chain in both Australia and Ireland. With more than 300 global sites, it's now aiming to expand into the UK lunch scene. Social media is filled with praise, and TripAdvisor reviews are equally glowing. 'An absolute must go. I have 3 / 5 of my lunches there. Best Mexican on the market,' one customer wrote. Another called it 'the perfect work lunch spot', and if the expansion goes to plan, you might be seeing one open near your office sooner than you think. It's not the only popular fast food chain expanding in the UK. One burger joint from the Netherlands is also planning to open 100 new UK sites. More Trending Fat Phill's, which is said to be home to Amsterdam's 'best burger', quietly launched in Clapham Junction in London at the end of 2024, serving up smash burgers, American-style sandwiches, loaded fries and mac and cheese. The chain, also known as Fat Phill's Diner, is still relatively new, having only been founded in 2019 by Armin Vahabian, but it's already got 18 locations across the Netherlands. It's been brought over here by Freshly Baked Ltd, the franchisor behind pretzel joint Auntie Anne's UK, and as part of this deal, there are plans to open several more sites on London high streets in the near future and develop up to 100 sites nationwide over the next 10 years. View More » Multiple sites also look set to roll out across Ireland by 2030. Zambrero has 13 different stores across five UK locations. These include: London: Cannon Street, Eastcheap, Kentish Town, Battersea, Crouch End, Twickenham Essex: Chelmsford and Loughton Reading: Queen Victoria Street Birmingham: Bull Ring and Colmore Row Manchester Cross Street and Manchester Picadilly Do you have a story to share?
