Cardoso hails Mamelodi Sundowns' ‘belief, attitude' in record-breaking PSL win over Chippa United

Mamelodi Sundowns took a significant step toward sealing their eighth consecutive league title after a commanding 3-0 win over Chippa United in their Premiership clash on Wednesday night.
The emphatic victory allowed the Brazilians to restore their 12-point lead at the top of the table over second-placed Orlando Pirates, who had earlier edged Golden Arrows 2-1 at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday.
Now just four points away from mathematically securing a record-extending 18th top-flight crown, Sundowns remain firmly on course for a historic season, with the possibility of adding a second CAF Champions League title also still alive.
Head coach Miguel Cardoso praised his players' determination and composure after what marked their 21st win from 25 league outings this season.
'Every match that finishes 3-0 looks like flowers were coming from the sky, but it was hard work,' Cardoso said after the match.
'We saw a very difficult match from the beginning, with Chippa United closing the back and changing their structure.
'It was the first time in the season they were playing in a back five; they had never played in a back five previously.

'They played a 5-4-1 (formation), trying to close us down in the middle, and there was a moment when I called Tebza (Teboho Mokoena) to the bench, telling him we needed a change.
'He told me that he felt like we were going to score, and I said they only had five minutes, and it happened.
'I am telling this story because the boys have a huge commitment, belief and attitude towards the goals that we have.'
The Brazilians may have faced a few hiccups in this season's league campaign compared to their flawless run last term, but their dominance remains undisputed, as reflected by their commanding lead at the top of the table.
Goals from Iqraam Rayners, Jayden Adams and Thapelo Maseko not only helped them ease past Chippa United, but also saw them break their own league record for most goals in a season.
The 3-0 win took their tally to 57 goals – surpassing the previous mark of 56 – with still three games left to play.
'I get happy when I have scores that go beyond 1-0,' Cardoso continued.
'I always say that we should score one more than the opponent, as I always maintain a zero on our end; then that will be fantastic.
'But that doesn't mean that my attitude is not an aggressive and offensive one.
'It only means that I believe that teams are built on the capacity to understand the core moments of the game.'

Erasmus faces selection puzzle ahead of Rugby Championship squad announcement
Edwill van der Merwe scored a brace aganst Georgia on Saturday and has surely staked a claim in the Rugby Championship squad. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Rassie Erasmus will name his 36-man squad on Tuesday for the upcoming Rugby Championship matches against Australia — and the big question is who will miss out, given the Springboks' current embarrassment of riches. The head coach has used 48 players over the past four weeks, with few letting themselves down and several newcomers delivering notable performances. At the weekend, Erasmus' bold gamble on an entirely uncapped front row — Boan Venter, Marnus van der Merwe and Neethling Fouché — paid off handsomely. Cobus Wiese, ironically filling in for his suspended brother Jasper at No 8, impressed in a position that's not his natural home. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading Edwill van der Merwe once again underlined his growing reputation, staking a real claim alongside the likes of Kurt-Lee Arendse and Cheslin Kolbe, while Canan Moodie continued his smooth transition into a capable deputy for Jesse Kriel at outside centre. One clear conclusion Erasmus can draw from this block of matches is that Grant Williams is currently his top-performing scrumhalf. Yet, it was also encouraging to see Faf de Klerk fight his way back into contention, with a feisty and skilful second-half cameo. Kwagga Smith and Pieter-Steph du Toit continue to be tireless warriors, while Ruan Nortjé's recent displays suggest he has matured into a genuine international-class lock — a development that will please Erasmus and his selectors. 'We are fairly happy, it could've been better,' Erasmus said with typical understatement, after Georgia were brushed aside 55-10. 'What we expected from them was physicality and disruption, and we certainly got that. But I don't think it was a performance over the full 80 minutes from us. "There were a lot of guys who made a lot of errors today because of how Georgia played — and I don't mean that in a negative way. They disrupt very well.' Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu had a mixed outing at flyhalf, but Erasmus expressed no concern over the young playmaker's form. Springbok flyhalf Handre Pollard. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix 'Sacha is not necessarily our first-choice 10. We've got Manie (Libbok), who is pretty much on song, and when Handré (Pollard) came on, he was pretty solid,' the coach explained. 'If you just look at Sacha's goal kicking — he missed four — but I think he ended well. In the warm-up, he picked up a hip pointer injury, but he still wanted to play. 'I don't know if that was an excuse for how he kicked at poles, but he definitely ran it out. 'We like flyhalves who try things on the field, not just play safely in their little box. And he certainly wasn't one of the guys who made the most errors today. Georgia thrive on spoiling and disrupting, and a lot of guys struggled with that. 'I'm not frustrated with Sacha — it's only his second start for us this year. He's still young compared to our other flyhalves.' Erasmus confirmed that his Rugby Championship squad will have a more settled look, with experimentation largely shelved for now. 'The Rugby Championship is a step up from Tier Two nations, the Barbarians and the Italy matches,' he said. The coach added that nine additional players will be placed on standby as injury cover.

PSL transfer news: Mofokeng, Coetzee, Kodisang, Mokwana
With the Premier Soccer League (PSL) set to kick off in three weeks, many teams have been active during the transfer window, working to strengthen their squads. Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have combined to sign 17 new players as they aim to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns. Both teams won a trophy last season but were unable to compete effectively against Masandawana in the league. Amakhosi and Pirates just completed their pre-season tour of Europe and will look to test their squads for the upcoming season. Sundowns have been relatively quiet since returning from the FIFA Club World Cup. The Brazilians have parted ways with Rivaldo Coetzee, Thabang Sibanyoni, Sipho Mbule, Sanele Tshabalala, Lebohang Maboe, Lucas Suárez, and Sifiso Ngobeni. Coetzee's agent, Mike Makaab, has revealed that the former Ajax Cape Town defender has recovered from injury and is ready to join any team 'I think the first thing you need to remember is that Rivaldo left Sundowns with an injury, but he has made big progress and he should be ready by August,' Makaab told FARPost. 'There is interest in the player, but at the moment, nothing has been official. We hope that we will find a club for him sooner rather than later.' Sundowns are reportedly looking to loan out Kobamelo Kodisang to a club in Portugal. The 25-year-old winger played just seven league matches for Downs last season. Mohau Nkota leaving Pirates for Saudi Arabia shocked many soccer fans. Many expected his peer, Relebohile Mofokeng, to be the only one leaving the PSL giants. The 20-year-old is still with the Buccaneers despite being linked to several European and Middle East teams. Bafana Bafana winger Elias Mokwana is back in the country after a good season with Esperance. The former Sekhukhune United star has been linked to Chiefs, but it remains unlikely that the Tunisian will want to sell Mokwana. With the PSL starting early August, expect teams to go all out as the transfer deadline looms. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. From Royal AM to Highlanders AM? Mama Joy awaits MaMkhize's call
Waiting Royal AM superfan "Mama Joy" Chauke says she's waiting to hear from Shauwn Mkhize about her membership to become a Mbabane Highlanders AM supporter. Photo: Instagram Image: Instagram What does the future hold for Royal AM superfan Mama Joy Chauke now that the club have been kicked out of the PSL after owner Shauwn Mkhize's financial misgivings? South Africa's favourite super fan says for now, she's waiting to get word from MaMkhize about the KwaZulu-Natal club's future. "I'm still with Royal AM. We are just waiting for her to give us the green light to follow her there, otherwise, I will remain a Royal AM supporter until she announces that Royal AM is no more," Mama Joy said on Sunday, according to KickOff. "She will inform us if we can support Highlanders. They must treat her well because, as their president, she will attend every game. Next Stay Close ✕ "Yesterday, I spoke with MaMkhize, and she mentioned that she is trying to organise travel packages for the Royal AM supporters so we can make our way to Eswatini. She added she remains fully committed to Royal AM – at least for now. "Personally, I'm still a card-carrying member of Royal AM, so I will become a Highlanders AM supporter once I receive their supporters' card. Interest from Eswatini is already pouring in. "I have been receiving many calls from Highlanders AM supporters in Eswatini, inviting me to join them. They want me to be part of their fanbase. Yesterday, I dominated all the front pages in Eswatini. And while Highlanders is a much larger club in that region, Mama Joy insists her loyalty is still tied to the original team – until told otherwise. "Highlanders is a huge team in Eswatini, with many more supporters compared to Royal AM, and they have qualified for the top eight. However, I am waiting for the Royal AM management to tell me what our next steps will be." Last week, the Durban businesswoman insisted on Robert Marawa's show on 947 that she did not buy the Eswatini club after she was appointed as their president. After her unveiling as their new president, she immediately rebranded the club Mbabane Highlanders AM. Mbabane Highlanders are the most successful team in Eswatini with 13 league titles to their name. However, they haven't been champions since 2001. In April, the PSL voted to kick MaMkhize's Royal AM out of the league. Royal AM had been placed under auction to recoup some of the R40 million that Mkhize owed to SARS. After an extensive bidding process, Durban businessman Roy Moodley appeared to have won the race to purchase the club, but after he could not cough up the funds, the sale collapsed, and the league decided to kick the club out.
