Kota Kinabalu: Warisan Vice President Datuk Junz Wong has called for the revival of Sabah's once-successful cooking oil industry, urging renewed efforts towards economic self-sufficiency through value-added industries. Speaking as a panellist at the Reset Sabah: Economy forum held on May 10, Wong said the success of the Warisan government's edible oil initiative, which for the first time enabled Sabah to produce and market its own locally refined cooking oil brands, 'Bess, Gold and Onsoi'. 'This was not just a plan on paper. It was implemented under the Warisan administration. We made history by launching Sabah's own cooking oil, refined and packaged locally and sold at a much more affordable price compared to West Malaysian products,' he said. He emphasised that Bess Cooking Oil, for example, was priced at only RM21.25 per bottle shows that it was a clear demonstration that Sabah has the capacity to control its own supply chain and offer better choices to its people. 'The initiative was part of Warisan's broader vision to industrialise Sabah and reduce dependency on the Peninsula by encouraging local businesses to invest in downstream processing of palm oil. 'The goal was to build a full value chain from plantation to refinery to branding, right here in Sabah. It was a bold step towards economic autonomy,' he said.
Advertisement He also emphasised that reviving and expanding the local edible oil industry would bring many benefits, including more affordable, higher-quality products for the locals also lower production and transportation costs for local businesses. Besides, job creation and economic growth in both rural and urban areas also enhanced supply chain resilience and greater economic sovereignty for the State. 'Warisan's vision was always clear, which is to industrialise Sabah, not just talk about it. We have proven it can be done and once we are back in government, we will do it again and push it even further,' Wong said. He said Sabah must move beyond exporting raw materials and start producing more finished goods locally. 'We must stop being just resource providers and start being value creators. That is how we build a strong and self-reliant Sabah, by keeping the economic value here, for the people of Sabah.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Health outreach or ‘gay party'? Kelantan urges facts before judgement

Published on: Sunday, July 20, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jul 20, 2025 By: Malay Mail Text Size: KOTA BHARU: The Kelantan government has today called for a thorough investigation, after the police was criticised for raiding an HIV outreach programme which it had alleged as a 'gay sex party'. Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Mohamed Fadzli Hassan ( pic ) said in a statement that all parties must remain open-minded, and everyone must be afforded the right to justice with wisdom and fairness. Advertisement 'To resolve this matter, the Kelantan state government calls for a thorough and comprehensive investigation to ensure that no party becomes a victim of misunderstanding, slander, or public judgement before the truth is fully established. 'If investigations confirm that the police's actions were justified and based on facts, stern measures should be taken against those involved,' he said in a statement here. 'Conversely, if the NGOs' and individuals' claims are proven true, corrective steps must be taken. The principle of justice must prevail,' he added. However, he insisted that anyone planning potentially controversial events to seek proper approval from authorities. He added that if participants were from outside Kelantan, this should be clarified to protect locals from undue blame. 'Transparency is essential to prevent baseless assumptions and unwarranted judgement within society,' he said. Fadzli's remark came as some locals blamed the media and the police for casting Kelantan in a bad light by falsely claiming that a 'gay sex party' had taken place in the state. On Friday, the MAC confirmed that it conducted a night outreach session here on June 17 under the Differentiated HIV Services for Key Populations model. MAC said the session was in collaboration with Kota Jembal Health Clinic and part of a strategic approach introduced by the Health Ministry. It said the session was held from 8pm to 2am and had reached over 70 high-risk individuals, with services scheduled outside office hours to improve accessibility. This comes as a coalition of civil society groups had also urged Kelantan police to revise their statement on a June 2025 raid of an alleged 'gay sex party' here, which they clarified was in fact a health outreach event. The groups, led by transgender rights advocacy group Justice for Sisters, said media reports following the raid resulted in harmful and stigmatising remarks that have intensified fear among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals seeking health services. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Published on: Sunday, July 20, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jul 20, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) vice president Datuk Peter Mak ( pic ) has urged Sabahans to unite in support of greater state autonomy to ensure the state's development keeps pace with the rest of the country. Speaking at the PBS Api-Api, Luyang and Likas joint AGM, he said meaningful progress is possible only when Sabah has full control over its own affairs. Advertisement Mak said local leaders are better placed to understand and address community needs, drawing from his experience leading PBS in Labuan. He clarified that the autonomy push should not be viewed as anti-Federal, but rather a step toward development driven by local priorities and realities. He also called on voters to support Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming state election, saying a strong mandate is essential to uphold Sabah's rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? He made this call when officiating the Sarawak Day celebration here, which was organised by Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Bawang Assan and Persatuan Penduduk Engkilo Sungai Bidut. He said Sarawakians must not forget that the state holds a special status in the formation of Malaysia, as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). 'On this historic day, let us once again affirm our rights as Sarawakians—the right to determine our development priorities, the right to benefit from our own resources and the right to protect the interests of our people. 'To our young generation, I urge you to know your history. Be proud of your roots. More than that, take on the responsibility of carrying Sarawak forward. Don't just inherit the land—inherit the spirit of struggle, unity and the drive for excellence. 'Today is a time for hope and renewal. We are committed to bringing better infrastructure, empowering our youths, uplifting education, strengthening rural development and ensuring opportunities reach every corner of our land,' he said. 'We reflect on the sacrifices made by those who came before us—our past leaders and every ordinary Sarawakian who worked with pride and determination to build the Sarawak we know and love today. 'Here in Bawang Assan, here in Sibu, as in all of Sarawak, we are blessed with a rich cultural fabric—Iban, Chinese, Malay, Melanau, Bidayu , Orang Ulu and many others—living together in peace and mutual respect. This unity in diversity is one of our greatest strengths, and is something we must continue to cherish and protect,' he said. A huge crowd waves the Sarawak Flag during the celebration. – Photo by Peter Boon He said everyone must know it was the late former Chief Minister Pehin Sri Adenan Satem who awakened the Sarawak spirit, and it was Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg who translated that spirit into policies and political will to institutionalise and move forward with economic empowerment, legal assertion rights and strategic forward planning. His leadership paved the way for the empowerment of Sarawak's autonomous powers, and the legacy of his struggle is still felt to this day.' Wong Hua said since Abang Johari took over, Sarawak continued to move forward in economic transformation, digital economy, and renewable energy to advancements in education, healthcare, and rural infrastructure.
