Eight killed in overnight Sudanese paramilitary attack: Civilian bunker bombed; health workers targeted

Eight civilians killed by Sudan's RSF bombing of a bunker sheltering dozens of people in El-Fasher (Image credits: AP) Eight civilians were killed when Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) bombed a bunker sheltering dozens of people in the besieged city of El-Fasher, a doctor reported to AFP on Thursday. The doctor, speaking anonymously from El-Fasher Teaching Hospital, one of the city's last functioning medical facilities, said the RSF used a drone to target the shelter late Tuesday night. Health workers in the area have faced repeated threats and rely on satellite internet to communicate due to the ongoing communications blackout. El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, is the only major city in the Darfur region not under RSF control, despite being under siege since May last year. The attack is part of the RSF's intensified campaign to seize the city after it lost control of Sudan's capital, Khartoum, to the army in March. An eyewitness confirmed to AFP that the bombed shelter was protecting dozens of people. El-Fasher's resistance committee reported continued RSF artillery attacks throughout Wednesday. The war between the RSF and the Sudanese army, which began in April 2023, has devastated Sudan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Zo bestrijden vrouwen van 60+ incontinentie – helemaal discreet Damesondergoed Meer informatie Undo Tens of thousands have been killed, and the country faces the world's worst hunger and displacement crisis. Most of Darfur is now controlled by the RSF, with media and communication access heavily restricted. El-Fasher's estimated one million residents are struggling to survive with almost no access to food, water, or healthcare. Critical infrastructure has collapsed due to fuel shortages and lack of maintenance. The United Nations recently reported that nearly 40 per cent of children under five in El-Fasher suffer from acute malnutrition, with 11 per cent in severe condition. Although a formal famine declaration is not possible due to limited data, aid organisations warn that starvation is widespread. Since the start of the conflict, around 780,000 people have been displaced from El-Fasher and nearby camps, including 500,000 in April and May alone during a series of RSF assaults. Sudan now faces the largest internal displacement crisis in the world, with 10 million people uprooted, nearly 20 per cent of them in North Darfur.

Built to last? Cracks, erosion appear near Ghaggar bridge within months of launch

1 2 Panchkula: Less than three months after its grand inauguration by Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini, a portion of the Rs 50 crore Ghaggar river bridge project is already showing alarming signs of structural failure, raising serious questions about construction quality and public safety. What was meant to be a long-term solution for easing traffic across sectors 20-21 and 24-26 has now become a symbol of premature decay. The side slopes, designed to protect the bridge from erosion and weather damage, are eroding themselves. A site visit revealed deep cracks in the concrete and visible damage from recent rainfall, prompting fears that the road leading to Maharana Pratap Chowk and the bridge itself could be compromised, especially during the ongoing monsoon season. Mohit Gupta, founder of Solution Box, a residents' help group, said, "It raises questions on the quality of material and the kind of work that was carried out. This concrete side slope was recently built. The soil is loose here. It seems compaction of soil was not done properly, which is why it got washed away. If you see this side slope at the old Ghaggar bridge at Majri chowk, there is a stark difference in the work as compaction of soil was done properly, and the work quality is much better. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dubai's Next Icon: Experience Binghatti Aquarise Luxury Binghatti Developers FZE Learn More Undo " N K Payal, executive engineer, Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP), that implemented the project here, said, "This side slope protection is built to protect the road and not the bridge. Though this entire road, the chowk, and bridge are part of the same project, the slope is built at a place which 3-4ft high. It will not impact the bridge at all." "The slope work is currently going on. The thrown concrete you see here was put on Tuesday only in view of rain so that soil does not wash away as there is no grass. However, the contractor is responsible for repairs under the 10-year defect liability period, and if any portion is damaged, it will be fixed by him," Payal assured. BOX: Long delayed project: The bridge was inaugurated by Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini amid much fanfare on April 20. The 360-metre-long and 16-metre-wide bridge connects Sectors 20-21 with 24-26. It also reduces travel to Zirakpur, Rajpura, Patiala, and Mohali airports. This bridge is a part of the PR-7 ring road connecting Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh. Residents residing near Sectors 20-21 lament about traffic congestion in the absence of any traffic lights or traffic cops here. Delay reason: HSVP officials said the project started in 2020 with a two-year compeletion deadline but got delayed due to various reasons like environmental clearances, COVID-19, and monsoon disruptions. Earlier, the Punjab govt's in-principle approval for the work came late. The connecting road falls in its jurisdiction.

Tirumala Temple Introduces 'Book Prasadam' To Promote Sanatana Dharma

In a move aimed at curbing religious conversions and fostering awareness of Sanatana Dharma, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has launched a "Book Prasadam" programme, offering devotees books on Hindu traditions and the glory of Lord Venkateswara. This initiative, guided by TTD Chairperson BR Naidu, seeks to widely propagate the rich heritage of Hinduism. So, from now on, alongside the traditional laddoo, devotees visiting the revered Lord Venkateswara temple will receive books as prasadam. The programme, spearheaded by the TTD's Hindu Dharma Prachara Parishad, focuses on distributing spiritual texts for free in various areas, including Dalit hamlets, remote villages, and agency regions across Andhra Pradesh. Devotees waiting for darshan in the compartments of the Vaikuntham Queue Complex at Tirumala will also be given books. During a recent event at the Tirumala camp office, TTD officials presented Chairman BR Naidu with an array of books slated for distribution. The collection includes revered texts such as Sri Venkateswara Vaibhavam, Vishnu Sahasranamam, Venkateswara Suprabhatam, Bhaja Govindam, Lalita Sahasranamam, Shiva Stotram, Bhagavad Gita, and biographies of influential personalities. A remarkable aspect of this initiative is that the entire cost of printing these books is being borne by generous donors, ensuring no utilization of TTD funds. With this philanthropic support, the handbooks will initially be printed in Telugu and subsequently extended to other languages for nationwide distribution. The TTD Chairperson has emphasised the importance of this programme in propagating Hindu Dharma and actively working to curb religious conversions. The idea is to promote spiritual welfare and preserve and promote Sanatana Dharma.
