On Monday, Madonna made her return to the Met Gala after a seven-year hiatus. For this year's theme of 'tailored for you,' Madonna wore a Tom Ford by Haider Ackermann: a cream double-breasted tuxedo in peached silk, complete with a crisp white piqué plastron shirt paired with a white piqué bow tie. The look was finished off with jewels by Diamonds Direct.
It almost wasn't even a reality, says Madonna's stylist Rita Melssen.

'She actually wasn't going to go, it wasn't even really on her radar. And then someone brought it up to her, and of course she was like, 'this is an incredible theme and I want to support and I want to show up,' Melssen says. 'We did some really deep, deep dives, deep research, got really into Black dandy over the decades. What did that look like from the 1800s into the 2000s and all the different iterations and versions of it. Her and I really just sat down. We shared feedback, we shared images. It was a really collaborative process between the both of us.'
Melssen felt there were any number of directions they could go in when it came to a designer to work with, until someone sent her an image of Madonna's iconic 1995 VMA look wearing a Tom Ford for Gucci blue silk button-down shirt.
'I was like, 'wait, Haider just had this incredible, incredible season and the first collection [at Tom Ford], and I had actually met him when he came to her tour in Paris.'

She gave him a call and the response was an immediate 'yes.'
'He has such a deep reverence for M and everything she stood for. Haider also is adopted, and she has four adopted children. And so there was a really deep connection there. Haider also grew up in Africa, and M obviously does so much work in Africa and Malawi and with her charities, so there was already sort of this overlap and connection there,' Melssen says. 'When I called him he was like, 'I want to make her just so powerful and elegant and show just the essence of who she is.''
The whole look came together in just about three weeks. The look drew inspiration from Gladys Bentley, a Black lesbian blues singer in New York City in the 1920s.
'Gladys Bentley was one of the original Black female dandies. She was a performer in Harlem around the Harlem Renaissance, and she used to wear these incredible white suits, like a white tail coat, white shirt, white hat, white pants,' Melssen says. 'And she was a Black lesbian during that time, which was unheard of. And so she really pushed a lot of boundaries and she made people see gender and identity in a very different way and was really a trailblazer in that way.'

Madonna was immediately interested in Bentley as a reference when Melssen suggested the idea.
'Of course it's very different, don't get me wrong. But there's just so many ways in which when M was coming up, she also challenged gender identity and what a woman can and can't do, also in reverence to all the women that came before her,' Melssen says. 'In her own way, M is a dandy, to have this audacity to push boundaries and to push people to think of her and women in general in a very different way.'
The first time Madonna tried the look on for Melssen and Ackermann and the Tom Ford team, the whole room knew it was the one.
'Haider was standing next to me and the literal hairs on his arms raised and he had goosebumps,' Melssen says. 'So we all slept well that night.'

As a mom to a one and a half year old, I own my fair share of Ms. Rachel toys and books. Frankly, we don't even watch that much Ms. Rachel, but my daughter is still obsessed with her and will pick up Hide and Seek with Herbie or her talking and singing Ms. Rachel doll over just about anything else in her playroom. But out of my growing collection of Ms. Rachel paraphernalia, this new Tonie is probably the most excited I've been about a toy in a long time, which is saying something as a shopping editor. Why? Because as my toddler is getting older it's becoming more and more difficult to limit her screen time. In our household, we opt for no TV on weekdays and sparingly on the weekends, but one rainy weekend or day sick can seem to throw us back down the rabbit hole. This Tonie brings all the fun of Ms. Rachel's show but without the high-stimulation screen, so kids can really focus and engage on what they're hearing. Both Mom and toddler are happy, and that seems to happen less and less often these days. Similar to the format of Ms. Rachel's normal videos and shows, the Tonie will feature a mix of engaging storytelling and songs. Kids will join her and friends Mr. Aron and Herbie for a "sound field trip" to a farm, school, and busy city. The Tonie is being sold individually for $20 as well as part of a set that includes a Toniebox (in case you don't already have one) for $100. The timing of the launch couldn't be better, considering we're getting into the dog days of summer when it's just too hot to do anything but play inside. Once again, Ms. Rachel to save the day! So many of Ms. Rachel's toys have sold out quickly, but I'd expect this one to go especially fast considering so many parents have been asking for a Ms. Rachel Tonie for so long. INDIANAPOLIS — Walking the halls in the bowels of the Gainbridge Fieldhouse before the WNBA All-Star Game Saturday, Minnesota Lynx guard Natisha Hiedeman was omnipresent. One half of the "Stud Budz," Hiedeman and her Lynx teammate Courtney Williams — who both have pink hair —started a live stream on Twitch a couple of months ago and spent All-Star weekend giving the fans a behind-the-scenes look at the W. Their Twitch bio describes the stream as "just two Stud Budz who hoop and live our best life." "It really started off as two friends, we knew about Twitch, and said, 'Let's just start streaming,'" Hiedeman said, not pausing the stream to do an interview with USA TODAY Studio IX. "It's a platform that's unique, that really no one in the W has touched, so we was like, 'Let's be the first ones.'" Williams, playing on Team Collier, said the 72-hour All-Star stream has been eye-opening. "We are so surprised, honestly, we did not know how much love we'd be getting," Williams said. "I think people just love getting that behind the scenes, being so authentic, seeing players mess with us." There were close to 15,000 people streaming the duo as they made their way through Indianapolis this weekend. All-Star captains Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier talked to Hiedeman about the Twitch stream before their pregame media availability on Saturday. "How does your phone not overheat?" Clark asked. Then she copped to being a fangirl. "I was watching the live stream all last night, downstairs on my TV." Team Collier's Angel Reese said the authenticity of the Stud Budz is what sets the content apart. "It's like a reality TV show with them," Reese, a member of the Chicago Sky, said. "They have made it the best. No matter where we are, what party we at, the players made the weekend what it is and you really enjoy the moment because it's so much fun. "Getting to know everyone off the court. You're battling all year, it's competition, but just being able to build relationships has been great. I am happy for what they are doing, I hope they continue to do it and make some money." The best moment of All-Star weekend? "Not a favorite moment, but Stud Budz has been the highlight of, I think, everybody's weekend," Collier said. Hiedeman said the sky is the limit now that their brand has been unleashed."We going to be at the Grammys, ESPYs, what other live events?" Hiedeman said. "Paris fashion week, the Met Gala — anything big and, like a good time, if it's fun and live, call us and we will be there."

Paris unveils mural of Josephine Baker to honor her legacy

PARIS -- Paris is reviving the spirit of U.S.-French entertainer and civil rights activist Josephine Baker with a new mural. Fifty years after her death, Baker now gazes out over a diverse neighborhood of northeast Paris, thanks to urban artist FKDL and a street art festival aimed at promoting community spirit. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Baker became a megastar in the 1930s, especially in France, where she moved in 1925 as she sought to flee racism and segregation in the United States. In addition to her stage fame, Baker also spied on the Nazis for the French Resistance and marched alongside Martin Luther King Jr. in Washington. She died in Paris in 1975. ''I feel moved and I feel happy, because this is part of a memory of my mother,' her son Brian Baker told the Associated Press at the unveiling of the mural Saturday. He was one of 12 children Josephine Baker adopted from around the world that she called her ″rainbow tribe″ and what her son called ''a little United Nations.″ The mural of Baker, meant to symbolize freedom and resistance, is among several painted in recent days in the neighborhood and organized by the association Paris Colors Ourq. The artist FKDL said he focuses on ''bringing women back into the urban landscape.' 'Josephine Baker has always been, for me, a somewhat iconic figure of that era. Both wild and free-spirited, but also deeply connected to music, musicals, and dance,″ he said. ''She was an extraordinary character, an incredible woman.' Baker was the first Black woman inducted into France's Pantheon, joining such luminaries as philosopher Voltaire, scientist Marie Curie and writer Victor Hugo. ''My mother wouldn't have liked words like iconic, star, or celebrity. She would have said, no, no let's keep it simple,″ her son said.
