27 cops suspended in UP's Saharanpur for skipping Kanwar Yatra duty
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ashish Tiwari ordered the suspension with immediate effect, citing serious indiscipline and negligence during a period deemed critical for public safety.
"No negligence of any kind will be tolerated in the Kanwar Yatra, and the Saharanpur Police Administration is completely on alert mode regarding this," SSP Tiwari said.
The suspended personnel include a Sub-Inspector, 10 Head Constables -- three of whom are women -- and three attendants.
The absence of these officials from active duty during the peak of the Yatra season prompted swift administrative action.
SSP Tiwari himself has been conducting late-night inspections and patrolling along Kanwar routes to assess on-ground arrangements.
He also visited Route No. 02 of the Kanwar Yatra -- from Bhagwanpur to Fatehpur Chhutmalpur Kalsia Behat Mirzapur -- which typically sees fewer Kanwariyas.
He issued necessary instructions to the officers on duty and reiterated that any laxity in performing duties would not be spared.
Emphasising the importance of maintaining order during the massive religious pilgrimage, the SSP made it clear that dereliction of duty -- especially when police presence is crucial for ensuring public safety -- goes against administrative directives and will face strong disciplinary action.
The Kanwar Yatra, a month-long religious pilgrimage during the holy Shravan period, witnesses millions of Shiva devotees, known as Kanwariyas, travelling to sacred sites like Haridwar, Gaumukh, Gangotri, and Sultanganj's Ajgaibinath Temple to collect holy water from the Ganga.
To manage the influx and ensure public safety, the Uttar Pradesh Police has ramped up security.
As per the guidelines issued by Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Krishna, deployments include 587 gazetted officers, 2,040 Inspectors, 13,520 Sub-Inspectors, 39,965 Head Constables and Constables, 1,486 women Sub-Inspectors, 8,541 women Constables and Head Constables, 50 companies of the Central Police Force and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), and 1,424 Home Guards. Special arrangements have also been made for 24/7 patrolling, with UP-112 vehicles actively mobilised.
Safety guidelines for the Kanwar Yatra mandate that devotees walk only on the left side of highways and that food and rest camps be established at least 20 feet away from the roads.
Authorities have warned against overspeeding and reckless driving and have rolled out enhanced safety measures, especially for women Kanwariyas. Swift action is promised in case of any complaints of indecent behaviour.
In addition, to safeguarding public health and ensuring fairness, food quality inspections are underway.
Hotels and dhabas along the route are being monitored in coordination with the Food Department, and the mandatory display of food item rates is being enforced to prevent overcharging.

Glass pieces found scattered along Kanwar Yatra route in Delhi, BJP raises alarm
A controversy has erupted in Delhi after several BJP leaders claimed that broken glass pieces were deliberately scattered along the Kanwar Yatra route in MLA Sanjay Goyal alleged that for the past two days, large quantities of glass shards have been found strewn across the road used by kanwariyas. "Yesterday, when we inspected the route, we saw glass scattered over nearly a one-kilometre stretch," the MLA said, adding that this posed a serious risk to the barefoot Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra reiterated the claims, saying that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has taken serious note of the matter. "Some mischievous elements scattered glass pieces along the Kanwar Yatra route for nearly a kilometre. PWD and municipal workers are cleaning the route. Local MLA Sanjay Goyal ji is present there. CM Rekha Gupta has personally taken cognisance of the incident," Mishra posted on the complaint from the BJP leader and the Public Works Department (PWD), Delhi Police has launched an investigation into the matter. Panic in Muzaffarnagar: Factory gas leak triggers chaos among Kanwariyas, locals
A major gas leak from a fertiliser factory in Muzaffarnagar on Saturday caused widespread panic, forcing Kanwariyas and local residents to flee the area in fear. The incident occurred around 12:30 PM at the Ankur Fertilizer Factory located in the densely populated Nagar Kotwali area. Protest erupts after toxic fumes spread; residents demand immediate closure of the fertilizer factory, citing repeated leaks and health hazards (HT Photo) Eyewitnesses reported that dozens of kanwariyas resting by the roadside near the factory were hit by a strong foul odour, accompanied by a burning sensation in the eyes and difficulty in breathing. The scene quickly turned chaotic as pilgrims scrambled to escape the area. The fumes spread rapidly, sparking alarm in nearby neighbourhoods. Concerned residents poured out of their houses, while many gathered outside the factory demanding immediate action. Adding to the panic were several police personnel stationed at a nearby outpost who also fled the scene, reportedly affected by the fumes. Angered by the incident, villagers and Kanwariyas staged a protest outside the factory. Many accused the administration of negligence and called for the plant's permanent shutdown. 'This factory operates right in the middle of residential areas. It is a constant threat to our lives and must be shut down,' said local resident Manvendra Singh. He claimed that a similar incident had occurred on May 11, during which several women working at the factory lost consciousness due to a gas leak. 'Are we waiting for another Bhopal disaster to act?' he questioned. Despite the chaos, officials from the pollution control department claimed that no leak had been confirmed in the initial inspection and assured that a thorough investigation of the factory would be conducted. Factory owner Sagar Vats denied any gas leak from the plant, calling the villagers' reaction an overreaction. 'There has been no leak. Our plant has the approval of 15 departments and has been running for 40 years,' he said. Vats added that he would call a specialised technical agency to re-examine the facility for any potential safety lapses. District Panchayat member Amarkant Malik supported the protesters, stating that this was not an isolated event. 'I live near the factory. The gas leak forced me to evacuate my family immediately. There are many residential colonies around this factory. People here are suffering from cancer and other serious diseases. Even the water has become undrinkable,' he said. As news of the protest spread, police and administrative officials rushed to the scene to control the situation. They managed to pacify the crowd, but tensions remained high as residents continued to demand the immediate closure of the factory. SP City Satyanarayan Prajapat said, 'The gas leak is being investigated by the pollution control department. The factory has been shut down. Law and order situation has been normalised'.

Punjab: 1.6-kg heroin, five pistols seized, 3 held as drug racket busted
Busting a drug supply racket, the Sangrur police arrested three individuals and seized 1.625-kg heroin, along with five pistols, senior superintendent of police Sartaj Singh Chahal said on Saturday. Among the seized items are four .32-bore pistols, a .12-bore country-made pistol, 13 cartridges and 12 mobile phones. (HT) The SSP said the investigation began on April 9 when a case was registered against Nigam, alias Lucky (24), Gurpreet Singh, alias Bhairon (28), and three unknown individuals following the initial recovery of 125-gm heroin, a .32-bore pistol, seven cartridges and four mobile phones. Nigam, who was already incarcerated in Sangrur jail, was arrested after being brought on a production warrant. SSP Chahal said Nigam's interrogation resulted in the arrest of Jaspal Singh, alias Billa (23), a Sangrur resident, on July 8. Two .32-bore pistols were recovered from Billu's possession. Jaspal's interrogation resulted in the arrest of Satnam Singh, alias Satta (23), who was also brought on a production warrant from the Sangrur jail. The police seized eight mobile phones from Satnam Singh that were allegedly supplied to him illegally inside the jail, leading to a separate FIR against him on July 11 under Section 52A of the Prisons Act at the Sangrur police station. He said that this led to the recovery of 1.5-kg heroin, one .32-bore pistol, one .12-bore country-made pistol, four .32-bore live rounds and two .12 bore cartridges. Gurpreet Singh alias Bhairon is absconding and efforts are being made to nab him, the SSP added.
