Liew: PN must offer vision, not just angry noise

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia needs an opposition that offers solutions, not just protests, Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong said following a rally demanding Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's resignation.
He made the remarks in a Facebook post after the July 26 gathering at Dataran Merdeka, which he said reflected more anger than direction.
"Their leaders must understand that being an opposition that only releases anger to manipulate emotions, especially among Malays, will take the country nowhere," he wrote.
"Perikatan Nasional (PN) could be a constructive opposition if it chooses to be. This means working with the unity government through parliamentary processes to serve the people."
Liew said the rally at Dataran Merdeka, led by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin of Bersatu, trained its criticisms on Anwar's leadership.
Despite rallying Pas's core base, it failed to draw support the wider public, he said.
Liew said that PN, which holds nearly one-third of the seats in Dewan Rakyat, has the opportunity to play a meaningful role in a healthy democracy — if it chooses to move beyond populist anger.
He pointed to the aftermath of the 2020 Sheraton Move as an example of responsible political conduct.
Liew said in the wake of the political crisis, DAP's Anthony Loke persuaded party colleagues to work toward stability through bipartisan cooperation with Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob's administration, leading to a memorandum of understanding that ensured continuity in government policies.
In contrast, he said that PN remains divided and without clear direction.
Liew said Bersatu continues to face internal leadership struggles, while Pas appears locked in a rigid ideological stance.
Without a coherent vision or practical policy proposals, PN risks alienating broader segments of the electorate.
"With no constructive proposals or coherent vision, PN will struggle to appeal beyond its base," he said.
"Democracy in Malaysia deserves a better opposition — one that puts the country first," Liew added.

Warisan to contest all 73 seats, PN rejects all alliances in Sabah's upcoming state poll

PARTI Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal announced the party will contest all 73 Sabah state seats in the upcoming election. He emphasised selecting winnable, loyal candidates committed to serving the people. Shafie denied any alliance with Perikatan Nasional (PN), stating Warisan will only work with the people. 'We will contest all 73 available seats, and we also have potential candidates ready — we're just waiting for the announcement. 'Candidates who can win, candidates who won't jump ship, and candidates who will serve the people,' he told reporters after the 'Ramah Mesra' (friendly gathering) with community leaders at Kampung Imam Laggu, Jalan Kunak-Semporna, on Friday (Aug 1). He also voiced concern over political fragmentation in Sabah, warning that the growing number of parties could lead to public disunity. 'There are various parties in Sabah, including Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan), United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation, the Social Democratic Harmony Party, Parti Bersatu Sabah, and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku. 'I advise that at the state level, the people must remain united and not become divided, because I am concerned that politics will become the root of disunity,' he said. Meanwhile, PN will contest solo in the upcoming Sabah state election, rejecting alliances it deems unstable or confusing. PN Sabah chairman Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee criticised local leaders for forming inconsistent political coalitions, calling them a 'three-way love affair' that doesn't benefit the people. He reaffirmed PN's confidence in retaining public support and slammed selective use of the 'Sabah for Sabah' slogan. The Sabah chairman also urged an end to party-hopping, saying it undermines democracy and stability. He believes PN's grassroots backing remains strong and capable of challenging the current GRS government. The Sabah state election is expected to be held soon following the end of the current administration's term. — Aug 2, 2025

Papar MP denies involvement in KK student's death

KOTA KINABALU: Papar MP Datuk Armizan Ali has been falsely linked to the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir. Armizan's political secretary Ghazali Hajiji dismissed these claims as baseless and malicious. "For the record, Datuk Armizan has no children studying at this school," he stated in a Facebook post on Friday (Aug 1). He warned against exploiting the issue for political gain through slander or public defamation. ALSO READ: Police deny involvement of children of VIPs in Zara Qairina's death "Sabah's political landscape is mature; we need not stoop so low. Enough is enough, we are better than this," Ghazali said. Following these allegations, a police report was lodged to ensure action is taken against those spreading false statements. He urged the public to refrain from using social media to disseminate lies or harmful assumptions. Previously, a social media user had alleged that Armizan's child attended the same school as Zara and was involved in her death. Others accused of involvement in the case include Sabah Head of State Tun Musa Aman and Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud's wife, Rosnih Nasir, who retired as the school principal last year. Police confirmed that neither the state governor's family nor any VIP's children were involved in Zara's death. Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel for breaking news alerts and key updates!
