Ramaphosa acted ‘justifiably' in removing Whitfield, says SACP
The South African Communist Party (SACP) has defended President Cyril Ramaphosa for firing former trade and industry deputy minister Andrew Whitfield.
Whitfield's dismissal has caused turbulence in the government of national unity (GNU), with the DA threatening to boycott the upcoming National Dialogue and several budget votes.
The party did not rule out supporting a motion of no confidence against Ramaphosa.
Speaking to The Citizen over the weekend, SACP spokesperson Mbulelo Mandlana said Ramaphosa acted within his rights as head of state.
'The DA's argument is flawed because it assumes the president shouldn't fully act as head of state to censure wrongdoing. The ultimatum reflects the DA's lack of commitment to government rules and regulations.
'The president acted justifiably in removing the deputy minister,' he said.
Criticism of the DA-ANC marriage
Mbulelo said the DA's reaction is problematic to the GNU and its partners.
'The DA's orientation in the GNU is not cooperation, it is to gain short-term political advantage at the expense of government efficiency, which should serve the people over the DA's interests,' he said.
Mbulelo said the SACP has always maintained that the formation of the GNU in its current form was ill-advised.
'The SACP has consistently opposed the GNU, calling it ill-advised, ideologically problematic, and detrimental to our progressive political agenda.
'We've also criticised its recent budget and processes that put the working class in danger,' he said.
DA responds to tripartite alliance attacks
On the other hand, DA spokesperson, Willie Aucamp told The Citizen that the party is committed to the statement of intent that all parties inside the GNU signed.
'The DA has, in all our actions, honoured the Statement of Intent that was signed when the GNU was formed, whilst the ANC on numerous occasions did not honour this agreement.
'It is thus the DA that is committed to the GNU, with the ANC that is constantly showing their disregard for the GNU and its largest partner in this coalition government of national unity,' he said.
Aucamp said the DA will continue using its positions in the GNU to improve the lives of South Africans, despite criticism from the ANC and its alliance partners.
'The SACP has, from day one, been opposed to the DA's presence in the GNU. They have tried everything to discredit the DA and the enormous positive role that the DA plays within the GNU.
'The DA is committed towards fighting corruption. If the president, the ANC, and their partners such as the SACP does not want to fight corruption, the DA will take over that responsibility,' he said.
What will happen to the GNU?
Meanwhile, ANC secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, told reporters on the weekend that the party is fully behind the decision to fire Whitfield.
'We are behind the president, and we are not moved by any threats,' he said.
The ANC's National Working Committee (NWC) is also expected to discuss the latest threats by the DA in a meeting this week.
Political analyst, Ntsikeleo Breakfast, believes that the DA will not walk out of the GNU despite the exchange of threats with the ANC.
'The funders of the DA will be unhappy if they leave the GNU. The GNU is not a brainchild of the ANC or the DA. We have heard both parties say they will never work with each other. Like I said, he who pays the piper calls the tune; these people are funded,' he said.

Foundations and civil society rally to make national dialogue work
DESPITE clear challenges facing South Africa like rampant youth unemployment, deepening inequality, crime, and a failing economy, the government still insists on a multimillion rand national dialogue. The writer argues for foundations and civil society organisations' involvment Sthembiso Sithole FOUNDATIONS and civil society remain committed to making South Africa great. While there are mixed voices around the National Dialogue, that shouldn't discourage individuals or organisations from participating and making a meaningful contribution. To strengthen and deepen South Africa's constitutional democracy through inclusive and sustained dialogue, foundations and civil society continue to play a central role in the country and in preparation for the kick-off of the National Convention set to take place on 15 August 2025 ahead of the National Dialogue. On 30 April 2024, former president Thabo Mbeki called for 'a new and truly inclusive national dialogue.' He made this announcement during an event marking '30 Years of Democracy.' On 01 May 2024, President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the Cosatu May Day Rally and expressed his support for the call for a national dialogue. On 19 June 2024, Ramaphosa reiterated the call and support for the national dialogue. Since then, foundations, civil society organisations, and ordinary South Africans have come out in full support of the initiative, while others continue to raise concerns about the dialogue. Post-1994, despite the efforts made to improve lives and service delivery, the country is still faced with inequality, unemployment, poverty, violence, crime, and social discord, which affect the lives of millions of South Africans. Let's face it, the country stands at a critical juncture. This moment calls for all of us to critically reflect with honesty on the journey travelled and work together to come up with practical solutions to make South Africa a better place. The National Dialogue is a citizen-led nationwide initiative to respond to the country's democratic challenges supported by government, civil society, and foundations. It is expected to result in a shared national vision with an action plan. The National Dialogue is an opportunity for all South Africans from all demographics to address these challenges and help restore the country to a place of progress and development in the next 30 years. It's for that reason that the role of civil society and foundations should be supported. The dialogue is a perfect platform for South Africans to engage robustly and ensure that all voices are heard in shaping the future of the country. Government, foundations, civil society, and many other representative bodies can't do everything on their own. Citizens must play their part and participate fully and freely in the national dialogue. The criticism and dissenting voices around the national dialogue should be welcomed, as they help bring another perspective with the intention to contribute to the outcomes of the dialogue. Like Deputy President Paul Mashatile said, the national dialogue is not a party-political exercise, but it's for the people and by the people. Just like during the dark days under apartheid, civil society and foundations have organised themselves to play an active role in mobilising South Africans to participate in the national dialogue. This moment needs all of us to unite and work together as we navigate the next 30 years of South Africa. (Sithole is a PhD student, communications and social media specialist. The arrogance of terrorism needs to be condemned
L Oosthuizen | Published 46 minutes ago As sympathy is demanded for the Palestinians by the likes of E Essa and Alaa Nassar, I fail to understand how, when Hamas attacks Israel at a music festival, any sane person would demand such undeserved grace for the people of Gaza. Israel gave the Gazans multiple chances before for the acceptance of democratic autonomy, but they blew it by electing the bloodthirsty Hamas Neanderthals who would act as proxies for the IRGC. It is well documented that since 1979, the Iranian leader Ali Khamenei, always had one agenda in mind: suppression of his people, especially the women, and the destruction of Israel and so-called Zionism. I am sorry, but reading some of the disturbing doctrine written by the Islamic government of Iran, involving young babies and the overall treatment of women, regarding sex-related dos and don'ts, shocked me to my core! It is no wonder that this ideology is causing so much havoc around the globe! This government cannot even honour its people! It is much like the ANC of South Africa! It doesn't hesitate to oppress. It only seeks its ideological advancements. It thrives on the demise of its people. It forges ahead with reckless abandon. You only need to consider the ICJ case brought forward by none other than self-proclaimed Islamist, Naledi Pandor! What we see happening now in the UK, with so many Islamic ministers taking charge, is a full-on assault on Western civilisation. The recent success of Zohran Mamdani in New York sends shivers down the spines of freedom-loving Americans, and so it should! Trump calls Mamdani a '100% Communist lunatic", and I am not surprised! Radical Islam, coupled with ongoing terror attacks on innocent civilians, should be a serious wake-up call to all who love freedom. The longer we sympathise with false pro-Palestine propaganda, the further away we will find ourselves from the truth! Terror acts committed by the Proxies of Iran should be called out for exactly what it is: terrorism! We must stop fooling ourselves by trying to sympathise with a people who have little or nothing to do with South African people! The mere fact that there are rumblings about the ANC having been compensated by either Iran or Qatar for taking Israel to court leaves a very bad taste in our mouths! Not to mention the changing of a street name in Sandton to some terrorist who is only celebrated by those who value acts of terror. When are we going to learn that siding with terror and hiding behind the mask of a cause so falsified by socialist and Marxist tendencies only brings us pain and division? The ANC couldn't care less about Palestinians, but for the sake of its relationship with Iran's terror axis, it will pretend to care for as long as it benefits the status quo. There has always been a golden thread running through and connecting nefarious characters through Marxist, socialist, and communist values. The ANC and Iran are no exception! It doesn't mean you have to blow up a building to be a terrorist, but if you are happy, as a government, to continually oppress and socially divide your citizens according to either a racist or Apartheid-driven agenda, in my opinion, you are a Dystopian, Draconian empire! Be careful of those who accuse you of Apartheid crimes, for too often, the accuser poses as the accused, and the oppressor poses as the oppressed. Is this what we are seeing with the pro-Palestine mobs who reside in South Africa? Do you feel any better displaying your red, black, white and green sticker on the back of your Fortuner, as you speed arrogantly passed several respectful road users? I have news for all those who chant death to the Jews, and disguise it as 'Free Free Palestine'- your time is running out, and the chickens for Justice are coming home to roost! The recent strength shown by Trump and the IDF was a warning to Draconian Radicalised governments that we won't give up the fight against terror just yet! I may not be a Jew, nor am I a Zionist, but I still know the difference between right and difference between propaganda and difference between truth and lies. I refuse to accept this narrative of Israel committing a 'Genocide', as what we saw on October 7th, 2023, was a mini Genocide, funded by Iran and backed up by ANC support! Enough is enough! Let's fix SA before we say anything further about 'Freeing Palestine" L Oosthuizen Durban
