BigBasket to launch 10-minute food delivery across India by March 2026
BigBasket, the grocery delivery service backed by Tata Group, plans to launch 10-minute food delivery across India by the end of the financial year 2026.
'One of the advantages we have is, being a part of Tata Group, you have enough internal capital available,' co-founder Vipul Parekh told Reuters. He also confirmed that the company aims to go public within the next 18–24 months.
The move comes as India's quick-commerce market, valued at $7.1 billion, sees heightened competition with the rise of new rapid delivery platforms.
Targeting quick-commerce rivals
BigBasket intends to challenge existing players like Swiggy's Instamart, Blinkit's Bistro, Magicpin's MagicNow, and Zepto Cafe, which offer instant delivery of items such as coffee and ready-to-eat snacks.
To support the expansion, BigBasket plans to grow its dark store network from the current 700 to between 1,000 and 1,200 by the end of 2025. A pilot programme for the food delivery service began a month ago in Bengaluru and is expected to extend to 40 dark stores by the end of July.
Rising competition in quick food delivery
Zepto Cafe was launched in April 2022 with a focus on coffee and ready-to-eat food. Blinkit Bistro, developed by Zomato-owned Blinkit, was released on the Google Play Store on 6 December 2024 and began piloting its 10-minute food delivery service in Gurugram in January 2025.
Swiggy's quick food delivery platform, Bolt, expanded to over 500 cities by May 2025 after its launch in October 2024. Its standalone app SNACC, which promises 15-minute delivery, was launched in parts of Bengaluru on 7 January 2025.
Zomato Quick, another 10-minute delivery service, was relaunched in January 2025 following the shutdown of Zomato Instant, an earlier pilot from April 2022, which was discontinued due to profitability concerns.
Customer strategy and menu
BigBasket is targeting existing users of food delivery apps like Zomato and Swiggy, while also aiming to attract new customers, Parekh said.
Currently, 5–10 per cent of BigBasket users combine quick-food items with their regular grocery orders — a figure expected to rise. The menu will include items from Tata Group brands such as Starbucks and Qmin.
The service will rely on dark stores — strategically located urban warehouses — to quickly process and dispatch online orders.

Aviation foray: Zomato's Deepinder Goyal backs LAT Aerospace, aims to disrupt regional air travel with compact air-stops
Zomato co-founder Deepinder Goyal is venturing into the regional aviation space with LAT Aerospace, a startup that aims to redefine short-haul air travel in India, according to a LinkedIn post by LAT co-founder Surobhi Das. 'While building Zomato and flying across India, Deepinder and I kept circling back to the same question: Why is regional air travel still so broken—expensive, infrequent, and mostly out of reach unless you live in a metro?' Das wrote, quoted PTI. India has over 450 airstrips, but fewer than 150 see regular commercial operations. That means nearly two-thirds of the country's aviation potential remains untapped, even as millions in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities spend hours—sometimes days—travelling by road or rail, the post added. Outlining the vision for LAT Aerospace, Das said the company envisions 'buses in the sky—affordable, high-frequency, and designed to connect the places the airline industry overlooked.' The startup plans to build 'air-stops'—compact takeoff and landing zones, no bigger than a parking lot—closer to residential areas. 'No chaos. No security lines. Just walk in and fly,' she said. Driving Change: Ecomm firms amp up for sustainable future
Electric vehicles are powering the green transformation of India's ecommerce industry. Amid an overall surge in order volumes, companies like Flipkart, Amazon, BigBasket, Swiggy, and Eternal (formerly Zomato) are speeding up the transition to ecofriendly vehicles for last-mile delivery , especially quick commerce. This is helping cut costs while lowering emissions and reducing the climate footprint. Walmart-backed Flipkart is looking to make its entire logistics fleet electric. After achieving the operational fleet milestone of 10,000 EVs last September, the company expanded its EV lineup by more than a third within six months. In FY25, Eternal, which also owns the Blinkit quick-commerce brand, completed more than 87 million EV-based food deliveries, a 40per cent rise from the previous year, expanding its EV rider base to over 37,000 across over 425 cities. BigBasket's EV fleet has more than doubled to 10,500 scooters this year, from 5,000 two years ago, with a third of the delivery fleet using electric scooters for order deliveries. Rival Swiggy announced a goal of transitioning to a full EV delivery fleet by 2030. 'Beyond environmental benefits, sustainability investments unlock new market opportunities and resonate with conscious consumers, strengthening customer loyalty. This balanced approach allows us to operate more efficiently, reduce waste, and build a more resilient business model,' said Abhinav Singh, vice president, operations, Amazon India and Australia. Amazon India deployed over 10,000 EVs in its delivery fleet as of October 2024, achieving the goal more than a year ahead of its 2025 target. These EVs operate in more than 500 cities across India, and the programme enables Delivery Service Partners (DSPs) to lease them. Long-term impact Amazon's primary goal is to achieve net-zero carbon by 2040, with electrifying last-mile deliveries as a key aspect. A Research & Markets report valued India's online food ordering and delivery market at $31.77 billion in 2024, and it is expected to grow at 28.17per cent compounded annually to around $140.85 billion by 2030. Using EVs for deliveries would help companies to reduce their climate footprint. 'At Flipkart, our approach to logistics is rooted in sustainability, innovation, and long-term impact,' said Nishant Gupta, head of sustainability, Flipkart. 'Today, more than 70per cent of our grocery deliveries are fulfilled using EVs.' The cost advantage also positively benefits delivery agents using these vehicles. Gupta said, 'Our goal isn't just to meet sustainability targets but to shape a resilient and future-ready supply chain that contributes to a cleaner India.' Companies are rapidly expanding charging infrastructure, partnering with EV makers and EV aggregation platforms, and forging tie-ups to give riders exclusive EV leasing benefits. BigBasket installed more than 3,000 EV charging sockets across its dark stores and BB Now stores, which it will continue expanding, said chief operating officer TK Balakumar. The Tata Group company is working with EV aggregators such as Zypp and Yulu for accelerating EV adoption besides engaging with national third-party logistics (3PL) partners for scaling up EV fleet deployment. Eternal, which aims to shift to 100per cent EV-based food deliveries by 2030, actively supports delivery partners to transition to EVs via a three-pronged strategy—raising EV awareness, building partnerships, and promoting EV ownership. 'We educate delivery partners through multilingual videos and app-based updates, and facilitate easy access to rentals and charging infrastructure through integrations with over 40 rental partners, battery-swapping networks and logistics service providers,' said Anjalli Ravi Kumar, chief sustainability officer, Eternal. To accelerate the adoption and improve accessibility of EVs for delivery partners, Zomato launched an EV rental bike fleet in Delhi, facilitating two-wheeler EVs on rent to its delivery partners. It has introduced 300 EV bikes through this pilot phase.

MSRTC to set up 100-acre vehicle scrapping facility near Sambhaji Nagar
MUMBAI: In a bid to increase the revenue of the debt-ridden Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), the transport department has decided to set up a mega vehicle scrapping facility near Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar on 100 acre of land. It will be on Public Private Partnership (PPP) basis and the bidder will be selected on the basis of share he offers in revenue. The upcoming facility would be around 20 times bigger than the existing facilities in the state, which are on 2-5 acre of land. Mumbai, India –08 June 2018: A View of ST buses lined up at the Mumbai Central depot, after Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) workers went on a flash strike, in Mumbai, on Friday, June 08, 2018. (Photo by Bhushan Koyande/HT) In 2021, the central government came up with a policy for scientifically scrapping vehicles which are over 15 years old, under the Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF) guidelines. Maharashtra government adopted this policy in 2023, and as per the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS), guidelines have been laid down for granting recognition to such scrapping centres. The largest facility will be built at Khuldabad in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, on a 100-acre MSRTC-owned land parcel. Currently, eight authorised entities operate scrapping centers in the state, each with an annual capacity of scrapping a minimum of 1,000 vehicles. Transport minister Pratap Sarnaik on Friday held a meeting regarding the scrapping of vehicles and facility centres. 'This new centre will ensure that old vehicles are scientifically dismantled and their parts are permanently disposed off in a way that prevents reuse. The initiative is expected to generate a new and sustainable revenue stream for MSRTC,' he said. This decision is expected to earn revenue for the debt-ridden MSRTC. The white paper released last week on the financial situation of MSRTC showed that its accumulated losses for five decades stand at ₹ 10,322 crore while dues towards employees' provident fund and gratuity are ₹ 3,297 crore. A transport department officer said that the site for the new facility has access from different regions of the state. 'It's on a fast track route from Mumbai and Vidarbha region due to Samruddhi Express highway. It is close to north Maharashtra and also western Maharashtra. In the coming years, around 6000 ST buses of MSRTC would go for scrapping as they would be old. Vehicles from government offices will also go for scrapping. So there is a huge scope for this facility to give good revenue to MSRTC.' He also added that MSRTC is planning to float tender on the basis of revenue-sharing model instead of a one-time amount, and the company which will offer a bigger share would get the work.
