England's Archer keen to play remaining India tests, Ashes

Straits Timesa day ago
LONDON - After missing four years of test duty due to injury, England speedster Jofra Archer is keen to make up for lost time and says he wants to play the final two tests against India and prove he deserves a place in the squad for the Ashes series in Australia.
Archer made his test comeback at Lord's in the third test, bowling at full tilt to claim five wickets, including three in the second innings as England clinched a 22-run victory to go 2-1 up in the five-match series.
England management, men's managing director Rob Key in particular, have been careful about Archer's workload since his recovery from elbow and back injuries but the bowler is raring to go.
"I can play the other two (against India) if they let me," Archer told Sky Sports.
"I don't want to lose this series. I told 'Keysey' I wanted to play the test summer and I wanted to play the Ashes.
"I think one tick is already there and I will do everything possible in my power to be on the plane in November."
It was Archer's first test since coach Brendon 'Baz' McCullum and captain Ben Stokes took the helm in 2022 and implemented an exciting result-oriented approach.

Archer was happy how his reintegration into the test squad had been handled.
"Obviously it would have been the format which would have taken the most time to come back to. So I played 50-over and T20 for the last year and a half, two years," he said.
"The guys have played some really exciting cricket since Baz took over. I think the mentality of the team under Baz suits the way I like to play my cricket.
"I just couldn't wait to get back and actually do it without having to be prompted to do it."

England, Sweden are different teams than in Euro 2022 semi-final, says Leah Williamson

ZURICH – England's run to the Women's Euro 2022 title included a 4-0 semi-final victory over Sweden, but captain Leah Williamson said that thrashing at Bramall Lane was ancient history as the sides prepare to meet again on July 17. England play their familiar foe in the European championship quarter-finals at Stadion Letzigrund in Zurich, and while they would love to sweep them aside again, Williamson said England have tremendous respect for their opponents. 'I think when you come up against a team, when you have had a previous fixture like that (2022 semi), then you're always probably going to remember it,' Williamson said on July 15 at England's base camp in Zurich. 'But I think so much has happened since. It's different, two very different teams now compared to that night.' Sweden coach Peter Gerhardsson agreed, saying: 'It didn't go well for us because they scored four goals, but that is history. Now it is a new game if we are going to meet England. We are going to write a new history, a better history, a good history.' Sweden dismantled plenty of people's favourites Germany 4-1 to top Group C and Williamson said they had not been getting the respect they deserved in Switzerland. 'I do think they deserve more recognition. The history of Sweden's previous results in tournaments is incredible,' she added. 'They're relentless when it comes to tournament football. 'They're just a very organised team. They work hard. Obviously some familiar faces. We know their characteristics, so it will be tough.' Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. 'We want to reach the final and with that being said we need to take every game for what it is. We can't look too much ahead.' Arsenal teammate and good friend Stina Blackstenius is one of those familiar faces. Blackstenius scored the late winner in Arsenal's stunning Champions League victory over Barcelona and continued her goalscoring run at the Euro, striking in Sweden's wins over Poland and Germany. 'Stina is an incredibly powerful footballer, and I think she's very intelligent, she's a hard player to play against. I was celebrating her success at Arsenal -– not so much now,' Williamson said, laughing. The 28-year-old Williamson is in esteemed company having lifted a major championship trophy as England captain, and would be in a class of her own were she to lift a second. Asked if she was driven by the chance to make more history, Williamson said winning another major title definitely drove the team. 'To do it alongside the team in 2022 was special. I'll be forever proud to have been part of that squad,' said Williamson, who admitted the 2022 players still had an active WhatsApp chat group. 'But we don't want it to be the only one. You always want to do more. And I'd like to say that on that day, I felt as happy as I'd ever felt, and that probably would have been enough for me .' 'But you start the next day, it creeps around, and everybody wants more all the time. We always say about how we work as hard as we can and we'll do everything we can, and we keep our dreams sort of up there,' she added. Also boasting their own WhatsApp group are England's substitutes at Euro 2025, who have become a tight-knit bunch with their own goal celebration, according attacker Chloe Kelly – who came off the bench to score a 110th-minute winner in the Euro 2022 final. Beth Mead and Aggie Beever-Jones scored as substitutes in England's 6-1 thrashing of Wales, and both made a beeline for the bench, snapping their fingers. 'A little group of us have a group chat, the finishers as you called it, and the positive 'clicks' we called it on the bench,' Kelly said at England's training base in Zurich. 'You've probably seen we all click (our fingers), and everyone's like, 'What are they doing?' 'We said if one of us comes on and scores, let's do that as our celebration. 'We work really hard on the training pitch and in the gym. Probably this sometimes goes unnoticed, but it's about sticking together, being at our best for when called upon, and training hard to get the best out of each other.' Beever-Jones added: 'I said to them 'If I score I'm going to come over and we're going to do our little snap celebration', which we did – and it basically means good vibes, good positivity. We've got each other's backs.' REUTERS

Scotland name two Lions-bound forwards in team to play Samoa

AUCKLAND - Scotland will field the two forwards who are to join the British & Irish Lions in Friday's test against Samoa at Eden Park in Auckland, coach Gregor Townsend said on Wednesday. Loosehead prop Rory Sutherland, who played in two tests on the last Lions tour in South Africa, and hooker Ewan Ashman are to travel to Australia on Sunday to bolster the squad for the match against the First Nations-Pasifika team on July 22 in Melbourne. But they will first play in Friday's game against Samoa, where Townsend has brought in five players to the starting line-up after last weekend's 29-14 loss to Fiji and made one other positional switch. Darcy Graham, who joined up with the Lions on Monday two days after he received two yellow cards and left Scotland a man down for the last part of their loss to Fiji, is replaced on the right wing by Kyle Steyn, who switches over from the left to make way for Arron Reed. Tom Jordan has been ruled out after fracturing his hand in Suva with Rory Hutchinson and Stafford McDowall taking his and Cameron Redpath's place in the centres. Gregor Brown replaces Marshall Sykes in the second row and pairs up with Grant Gilchrist, while Andy Onyeama-Christie returns to the starting line-up on the side of the scrum, coming in for Jamie Ritchie, who hurt his foot and was replaced after 21 minutes last Saturday. In a 6-2 split on the bench, prop Fin Richardson is in line for his first cap. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. England's substitutes have become a tight-knit group at Euro 2025, says Kelly

ZURICH - Forward Chloe Kelly, who came off the bench to score a 110th-minute winner in the Euro 2022 final, said England's substitutes had become a tight-knit group at this year's tournament with their own WhatsApp group and goal celebration. With the defending champions playing Sweden in the Euro 2025 quarter-finals on Thursday, Kelly, whose shirt-waving celebration was the defining image of the last final, described the camaraderie among England's super subs. Beth Mead and Aggie Beever-Jones scored as substitutes in England's 6-1 thrashing of Wales, and both made a beeline for the bench, snapping their fingers. "A little group of us have a group chat, the finishers as you called it, and the positive 'clicks' we called it on the bench," Kelly said at England's training base in Zurich. Kelly knows that there are football fans with tattoos of that image. The notoriety she has received since then took some adjusting to, she said. "But I'm just me, a girl from West London enjoying football, and that's what I'll continue to be throughout my career," she said. "I just love the game of football, and hopefully we can have many special memories as England together." Kelly still watches the video of that goal, a tap-in from close range, on YouTube. "I think it's just a special memory for me, one that I watch quite often if I ever need a little smile," Kelly said. "It's an incredible memory for me and my family. My mum sends it to me quite often as well. So it's nice to have such a special memory at an incredible stadium like Wembley." There was concern earlier this year that Kelly might not make Sarina Wiegman's Euros squad because she was barely playing at Manchester City. She publicly expressed a desire to move ahead of January's transfer window, and Arsenal signed her first on a loan spell and then a free transfer after her City contract expired. REUTERS
