Brazil fires drive acceleration in Amazon deforestation
SAO PAULO : A record fire season in Brazil last year caused the rate of deforestation to accelerate, in a blow to president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's pledge to protect the Amazon rainforest, official figures showed Friday.
The figures released by the national institute for space research (INPE), which tracks forest cover by satellite, indicated that deforestation rate between August 2024 and May 2025 rose by 9.1% compared to the same period in 2023-2024.
And they showed a staggering 92% increase in Amazon deforestation in May, compared to the year-ago period.
That development risks erasing the gains made by Brazil in 2024, when deforestation slowed in all of its ecological biomes for the first time in six years.
The report showed that beyond the Amazon, the picture was less alarming in other biomes across Brazil, host of this year's UN climate change conference.
In the Pantanal wetlands, for instance, deforestation between August 2024 and May 2025 fell by 77% compared to the same period in 2023-2024.
Presenting the findings, the environment ministry's executive secretary Joao Paulo Capobianco chiefly blamed the record number of fires that swept Brazil and other South American countries last year, whipped up by a severe drought.
Many of the fires were started to clear land for crops or cattle and then raged out of control.

PETALING JAYA : Environmental group Peka has demanded Petaling Jaya mayor Zahri Samingon prove that the construction of several bungalows at Bukit Gasing here meets the city council's conditions. In a statement, Peka president Rajesh Nagarajan said Zahri's assertion that the project complies with Petaling Jaya City Council's (MBPJ) criteria is unsubstantiated, as no supporting documents or reports were provided. 'There is no transparency at all from the authorities even though this is a matter that affects the lives of the residents of Bukit Gasing,' said Rajesh. 'If the project is truly compliant with the rules, we demand that MBPJ show us the approvals. Failing this, the only logical conclusion is that the approvals were not in order.' Peka recently called for a halt to the development of several bungalows at Bukit Gasing as they are being constructed on steep slopes. The group threatened to take legal action against MBPJ if it did not halt the development, which it claimed involved the extensive felling of trees on steep slopes. Peka claimed several landslides had already been reported in the area and that continued clearing could endanger lives. In response, Zahri today said the bungalows were being developed on private land and the project meets MBPJ's conditions, adding that it did not encroach on Bukit Gasing's forest reserve area. In a report in The Star, Zahri said the construction is located on land that can be developed, going on to note that there is a clear delineation of the border with the forest reserve. Rajesh today said Zahri's remarks on the delineation were irrelevant as Peka never said the development was encroaching into the forest reserve. 'Our concern is with bungalow development on steep slopes, which poses landslide risks to the area,' he said. 'The mayor is steadfastly avoiding addressing the issue at hand and is instead deflecting our concerns by responding to a point that was never raised and is not a point of contention.'

Brazilian who stole ball signed by Neymar gets 17 years prison
BRASÍLIA, July 2 — A Brazilian accused of stealing a football autographed by Neymar from Congress during the 2023 riots by supporters of ex-president Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to 17 years' imprisonment for the theft and other charges. The Supreme Court on Monday night convicted Nelson Ribeiro Fonseca Junior, 34, over the robbery of the ball. He was also convicted of violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, armed criminal association and attempting a coup over his participation in the riots in Brasilia. More than 500 people have been convicted over the events of January 8, 2023, when thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace to protest his election loss to left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Ribeiro confessed to taking the ball, which Neymar's boyhood club Santos — to which he returned this year — gifted to the Chamber of Deputies in 2012. His lawyers claimed that he found it on the floor of Congress during the unrest, took it away to protect it and handed it in 20 days later to the police. Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ruled that Ribeiro had 'actively participated' in events leading to the storming and sacking of Congress, the Supreme Court and presidential palace. Moraes described the ball which he took, which had been on display in a corridor, as a 'public good belonging to the public heritage' of Brazil. The riots came a week after Lula was sworn in after narrowly defeating far-right incumbent Bolsonaro in October 2022 elections. The demonstrators called for the military to intervene to oust him. Bolsonaro, a former army captain who served a single term from 2019 to 2022, is accused of instigating the riots, although he was in the United States at the time. He is on trial for allegedly plotting to wrest power from Lula in the event of his victory. Prosecutors claim the plot only failed due to a lack of military backing. EPA employees accuse Trump administration of ‘ignoring' science

(AP pic) WASHINGTON : US President Donald Trump's administration is 'ignoring the scientific consensus to benefit polluters', hundreds of Environmental Protection Agency employees said in a letter of dissent Monday, accusing the government of undermining the EPA's core mission. The scathing letter, signed by more than 200 current and former officials and their supporters, accused EPA chief Lee Zeldin of enacting policies dangerous to both humans and the environment. 'The decisions of the current administration frequently contradict the peer-reviewed research and recommendations of agency experts,' said the letter. 'Make no mistake: your actions endanger public health and erode scientific progress – not only in America – but around the world.' Under Zeldin, the EPA has worked to deliver Trump's campaign promises of lifting environmental regulations, boosting fossil fuel production and cutting clean energy spending. The letter identifies five main areas of concern, including the increasing politicisation of the agency, the reversing of programmes aimed at marginalised communities and the 'dismantling' of the agency's Office of Research and Development. It described the agency's communications under Zeldin as being used 'to promote misinformation and overtly partisan rhetoric'. 'This politicised messaging distracts from EPA's core responsibility: to protect human health and the environment through objective, science-based policy.' As an example, the letter cited official communications that likened 'climate science to a religion'. Zeldin has repeatedly stated that he sees the EPA's role as supporting US economic growth, and under his guidance the agency has set in motion a full-scale reversal of several environmental standards and greenhouse gas regulations. Unveiling a set of policy initiatives in March, Zeldin hailed the move as 'the greatest day of deregulation our nation has seen.' 'We are driving a dagger straight into the heart of the climate change religion to drive down the cost of living for American families, unleash American energy, bring auto jobs back to the US and more,' said the administrator of the federal agency charged with protecting the environment. The letter came weeks after the publication of a similar text signed by dozens of employees of the National Institutes of Health over the Trump administration's 'harmful' policies. The EPA letter had more than 170 'anonymous signers', with the text stating the administration had promoted 'a culture of fear' at the agency.
