2025 NFL draft: Saints schedule top 30 visit with Nebraska tight end sleeper
Here's another name to add to the New Orleans Saints' list of official 30 visits: Nebraska tight end Thomas Fidone II. Sportskeeda's Tony Pauline reports that Fidone has scheduled a formal visit at the Saints' headquarters in Metairie.
In addition to this official visit coming up with the Saints, Pauline says Fidone has received a lot of attention from the Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Vikings, and that he'll also work out privately for the Buffalo Bills. He's projected to be picked on the third day of this year's draft. Fidone previously competed at the Senior Bowl, on the American Team with Saints associate head coach/running backs coach Joel Thomas (who worked the event as the American Team offensive coordinator), so he's someone they've had contact with before.
Fidone was once seen as the top tight end on the high school recruiting circuit, and his performance at this year's NFL Scouting Combine confirmed the athleticism that made college coaches so excited. He weighed in at 6-foot-5 and 243 pounds before timing the 40-yard dash in 4.7 seconds flat, with outstanding numbers in the jumps and agility drills. That all combined for a rare 9.41 Relative Athletic Score (on a scale of 1 to 10), a metric which closely aligns with the Saints' own in-house standards.
Knee injuries kept Fidone off the field his first few years at Nebraska, but he played a key role in Matt Rhule's offense when the new head coach arrived in 2023. Fidone broke out with 25 catches for 260 yards that season and leveled up to catch 36 passes for 373 yards last year. He's got the look of someone whose best football is still ahead of him, but that's why he's a third-day pick instead of a second-day prospect.

Saints sign OT Jonathan Mendoza
The Saints added a player to their 90-man roster on Wednesday. The team announced that they have signed offensive tackle Jonathan Mendoza to a one-year deal. The Saints waived tackle Josh Ball earlier this week. Mendoza was undrafted this year. He finished his college time at Louisville as a starter at right tackle and also played four seasons at Yale before transferring to the ACC school for the 2024 season. The Saints have 2024 first-round pick Taliese Fuaga and 2025 first-rounder Kelvin Banks set to be their starting tackles. Mendoza joins Landon Young, Josiah Ezirim, and Easton Kilty in the mix for depth roles.

Saints WR Rashid Shaheed coming back with a vengeance after 2024 knee injury
While most people may find Rashid Shaheed a fun weapon for the New Orleans Saints offense, he has his sights set on earning even more respect in 2025 by winning that top wide receiver spot. "My role is just expanding and that's exactly what I want," said Shaheed when he spoke to the media earlier in training camp. One of the things that new Saints head coach Kellen Moore does well is creating plays for specific players. There are few guys in the league with a skillset that coaches want to experiment with than Shaheed. On paper, it is a match made in heaven. In his first three seasons, Shaheed had 94 catches for 1,556 yards with 10 touchdowns. He's even rushed 17 times for 123 yards and a score. That's also not mentioned the fact that he is an All-Pro second-teamer and earned a Pro Bowl nod for his work on special teams. The only issue with him is that he has a tough time staying on the field. He has bulked as well, adding about 10 pounds of muscle to get to 190. That could both open up his play style and help him stay on the field. "(This) is far from what I ever thought I'd be playing at, but I feel good. Feel like I'm moving great at this weight," Shaheed added later in the same press conference. 'It's all about longevity, and I feel like that weight is important.' Having Shaheed break out would be absolutely game-changing for this offense. No matter who the young quarterback that ends up with the starting job is, they need more threats to throw the ball to. Shaheed, Chris Olave and Brandin Cooks are a solid enough group in theory, but the truth is that none of them produced enough last year and missed major time due to injury. They are also lacking a true big-bodied threat, so they will need all of their stars to play up to their ability to have success. Though Olave is known as the top dog in that receiver room, there is plenty of room for Shaheed to break out and become wide receiver one. This chance could not come at a better time for the 26-year-old, as he is in the last season under contract after signing a one-year, $4.45 million extension last summer. A big year could result in a big payday.
