OPSWAT Opens OPX Lab In Dubai For Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity

OPSWAT has officially opened the doors to its OPX Lab in Dubai. This state-of-the-art Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) lab is the only facility of its kind in the region that delivers high-fidelity simulations of real-world cyber threats and provides a testing ground for developing and deploying robust, sector-specific defenses.
Designed as an immersive and interactive space, the OPX Lab offers existing and prospective customers a rare opportunity to experience real-time cyberattack simulations tailored to their unique environments. 'This isn't just a demo, it's a proving ground,' said Saif AlRefai, Solutions Engineering Manager at OPSWAT. 'The OPX Lab brings to life the kinds of cyber threats our customers face every day. It allows them to test how our technologies detect, prevent and respond to those threats in a fully controlled, hands-on environment. That level of experience translates into faster, more informed security decisions and a higher level of operational resilience.'
More than just a showcase, OPX Lab replicates sector-specific scenarios with a focus on banking, energy, and defense — sectors that are not only vital to the Middle East's economy but are also frequent targets of sophisticated cyber threats. OPSWAT was deliberate in choosing Dubai as one of the homes, citing the city's status as a regional innovation hub, ease of accessibility, and proximity to both enterprise customers and local cybersecurity talent. The lab in Dubai is part of OPSWAT's global OPX Labs initiative, to bring critical infrastructure simulation capabilities closer to high-risk markets.
Demonstrating the company's deep industry expertise, one of the sector-specific showcases is OPSWAT's Nuclear Plant Model Reactor. The display is more than conceptual, integrating OPSWAT's IT/OT cybersecurity platform in a practical demonstration of how sensitive environments like nuclear power stations can be protected from sophisticated cyberattacks. 'It's this kind of realism that allows clients to move beyond theory and gain meaningful insights into their actual security readiness,' explained AlRefai.
Importantly, OPSWAT is also extending access to its OPX Lab to its channel partners. This positions the facility not just as a customer experience centre, but as a strategic enablement platform. 'Experiencing live demonstrations of real-world cyberattack scenarios and seeing how OPSWAT's technologies such as MetaDefender and NetWall Data Diodes mitigate those threats was truly eye-opening. It not only deepened our technical understanding but also equipped us with practical insights to better guide our clients in securing their critical infrastructure. This is an invaluable resource for both partners and end-users alike,' said Tareq Joudeh, Senior Business Unit Head at StarLink.
At the heart of the OPX Lab is OPSWAT's MetaDefender platform, a comprehensive threat prevention solution that safeguards networks by securing files at every entry point. In addition to MetaDefender, the lab showcases over 20 OPSWAT products, including the MetaDefender Kiosk and MetaDefender NetWall Data Diodes. These solutions have been built specifically to meet the cybersecurity needs of highly regulated, mission-critical environments.

Battle for Heathrow's future ignited by businessman Surinder Arora

An Indian-born businessman is going up against the Heathrow Airport to develop a third runaway and new terminals at the UK's main hub. Plans submitted on Thursday would see Surinder Arora's £25bn plan go head to head with Heathrow's grander £33bn scheme to develop a longer runaway that goes under the M25 motorway. Heidi Alexander, the transport secretary, welcomed the proposals as part of the government's plan to boost economic growth with large scale infrastructure projects. To support the decade long plan the government is expected to announce an overhaul of the air traffic pathways to eliminate inefficiencies in stacking and flight path patterns. Officials are reportedly ready to launch an Airspace Design Service to redraw corridors that allow the planes to queue for landing. The corridors were first outlined in the 1950s and there has been a more than 10 fold rise in traffic since that era. Arora Group said its shorter runway length of 2.8km would deliver a 'primary benefit' of avoiding the costly and disruptive need to divert the M25 motorway. It would also challenge the existing operator by constructing and running a new modernised terminal, Terminal Six, located west of the existing Terminal Five. "Our Heathrow West proposal, which directly meets and supports the United Kingdom's primary objective of unlocking economic growth at the UK's only hub airport, with a strong commitment of doing so on-budget and on-time," Mr Arora said. 'The Arora Group has a proven track record of delivering." Heathrow Airport has countered with its own proposals and said its expansion would eventually amount to a £49bn investment plan that would see the runways, terminals and transport infrastructure undergoing an upgrade. 'We are uniquely placed to do this for the country," said chief executive Thomas Woldbye. "It is time to clear the way for take-off.' Its plan promises to deliver an annual passenger footfall of 150m from 84m last year. It said its 3.5km runway would run to the northwest of the existing airport. It said it would expand Terminal Five to two new arms to the west and north. It would also demolish terminals one and three and redesign three. Ahead of an official review it offered to discuss with its airlines how a shorter runway would deliver the same benefits as its plan. Arora has worked with leading engineer Bechtel for a cost estimate of under £25 billion and says its reduced land footprint will lessen disruption to local residents and businesses. Under its blueprint the new runway could be fully operational by 2035 and its new Terminal Six would open in two phases, in 2036 and 2040. Heathrow has suggested that despite government promises of a revamped planning process, its rival would face judicial review and other time consuming legal hurdles. The government's ambition of securing planning consent by 2029 and a new runway being operational within a decade is a key factor in the bidding process. Heathrow says there would be 276,000 new flights annually to boost the daily traffic to 756,000 aircraft. It has joined with airlines outside its current customer pool like easyJet to suggest new providers would operate from Heathrow for the first time. It has also said it will try to match its connections to UK destinations to that at Amsterdam, which it currently lags by ratio of 23:13. Other promises include a 50 per cent increase in cargo capacity plus 30 plus new daily flight routes to add to the 230 destinations to over 85 countries.

Road projects suspended amidst funding crisis

At least 27 major road and bridge projects across Uganda have been suspended or drastically slowed down due to a crippling government funding shortfall, the Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, has told Parliament. The Minister, who presented to Parliament a statement on the state of roads in the country, on Wednesday, 30 July 2025, attributed this to delayed payments and land acquisition issues, affecting projects like the Masindi-Biiso and Kabale-Kiziranfumbi oil roads, Kampala-Mpigi Expressway, and Kampala-Jinja Highway. 'As of July 2025, 27 projects have been affected by either full suspension or significant reduction in progress. These include 18 fully funded by the Government of Uganda, where contractors have suspended or slowed down works due to delayed payments, and nine externally financed projects, where delays are primarily attributed to the Government's inability to provide timely counterpart funding,' he said. The funding shortfall is attributed to a massive gap of Shs2.472 trillion in the financial year 2025/2026 where only Shs682 billion of the required Shs3.153 trillion was provided. The government is also carrying over Shs1.071 trillion in arrears from previous years, accumulating commercial interest and monthly cost claims from contractors. The situation is further complicated by land acquisition issues, with Shs443 billion needed for compensation and enabling access to sites, which has grounded externally funded projects. 'The cumulative effect of these suspensions and delays has led to slow absorption of project resources, exposure to financial claims, risk of asset deterioration, and reputational concerns,' he stated. The minister said that Uganda's road infrastructure is deteriorating rapidly, with 1,993 kilometers requiring urgent periodic maintenance and 260 kilometers needing rehabilitation. 'If not implemented, these roads degrade and instead require rehabilitation which costs about Shs2.59 billion per kilometer three times the periodic maintenance cost,' he warned adding that 'This could result in a preventable fiscal loss of up to Shs180 billion.' Gen. Katumba warned that if not urgently addressed, these disruptions will compromise Uganda's ability to deliver critical national infrastructure and maintain the existing network. The minister called for urgent financial intervention, emphasizing the importance of the road network to economic growth, regional integration, and service delivery. Despite the urgency of the situation, Parliament was unable to hold a substantive debate on the matter after it emerged that none of the ministers from the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development were present to respond to the funding concerns raised in the report. Government Chief Whip, Hon. Hamson Obua informed the House that the responsible ministers were all away on official engagements. Speaker Anita Among insisted that the Chief Whip must take responsibility. 'That is your role as Government Chief Whip; you are the one supposed to ensure members are in the House. This is not for debate. Whip, we shall hold you accountable,' she said. The Speaker deferred the debate on the statement to Tuesday, 05 August 2025.
