Invest part of US$6.2 bln for M'sia in Sarawak, Julaihi tells Amazon Web Services
KUCHING (May 5): Amazon Web Services (AWS) has been asked to allocate a sum of its investment in Malaysia to Sarawak.
In making the call, Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi said this would further expedite the state's digital transformation, in its effort to achieve a high-income status by 2030.
'AWS is investing US$6.2 billion (RM26.1 billion) in Malaysia, but if you look at the size of Sarawak, it is equally or almost the same size as Peninsular Malaysia.
'So please, with our digital transformation now underway in our effort to expedite our digital transformation, please do allocate some of your US$6.2 billion to Sarawak so that we would be able to achieve our target, especially in our effort to expedite digital transformation in the rural areas,' he said in his keynote address at the Sarawak Public Sector Innovation Forum here today.
Earlier, AWS regional managing director for Asean region Eric Conrad had said AWS (Malaysia) Asia Pacific region, launched last August, represents an investment of US$6.2 billion in the country.
He said AWS constantly works with its partners such as the Centre for Technical Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) to help realise Sarawak's digital economy aspirations.
'Together we can drive digitalisation and innovation in improving services, in creating an inclusive society, in building and developing economic growth, and enhancing quality of life,' said Conrad.
Among those present was Centexs chief executive officer Datuk Syeed Mohd Hussein Wan Abdul Rahman.

Rubio to attend Asean Summit in Malaysia on Thursday
WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will make his first trip to Asia since taking up his post, traveling this week to Malaysia for meetings with Asean allies, his office said Monday (July 7). The trip, starting Tuesday (July 8), will see Rubio, who is also President Donald Trump's national security advisor, focus on US policy in Asia after months of Washington concentrating on the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. "In his first trip to Asia as Secretary of State, Secretary Rubio is focused on reaffirming the United States' commitment to advancing a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific region," spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said in a statement, using Washington's traditional wording aimed at curbing China's growing influence in the Asia-Pacific region. Prioritizing and reaffirming Washington's commitment to East Asia and Southeast Asia "is in America's interest," a senior State Department official told reporters on condition of anonymity. "It promotes American prosperity and promotes American security," the official added. As with any trip to Asia by a US official, China will be the elephant in the room amid concerns over its expansionary behavior in the South China Sea, which the United States deems to be provocative. The visit also comes as many countries around the world are waiting for the next step in Trump's tariff wars. Sweeping levies announced in April were mostly suspended, as Washington engages in negotiations with friends and foes alike. On Monday, Trump said he would impose 25% on key US allies Japan and South Korea and a handful of others, including Malaysia (25%) and Laos (40%), as of Aug 1. Export-dependent Vietnam, which like Malaysia and Laos is a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), is one of the few countries to already reach a tentative agreement with Washington that spares it the high level of levies that Trump had threatened. At a summit in late May, Southeast Asian leaders expressed their deep concern at Trump's protectionist offensive. The senior US official said the issue was expected to be raised, and that Rubio would likely tell Asean that the United States wants to "rebalance" its trade relationships. A deadline on the tariffs is due to expire on Wednesday (July 9), with Trump suggesting elevated levies would snap back into place on Aug 1 for any trading partners who do not make a deal. Rubio's visit to Kuala Lumpur on Thursday (July 10) and Friday (July 11) coincides with that of his Russian and Chinese counterparts, Sergei Lavrov and Wang Yi. While there, Rubio is scheduled to attend a meeting with his counterparts from Asean and with a gathering of both Asean and East Asian foreign ministers. Last week, Rubio welcomed foreign ministers from Australia, India and Japan to Washington, where they pledged to work together to ensure a stable supply of critical minerals. China's domination of such resources - essential to new technologies - is causing increasing concern in western Europe and the United States. - AFP

Jollibee Group Reports Strong Q1 2025, Fueled by Global Expansion with Strong PH and International Growth
SINGAPORE - Media OutReach Newswire - 8 July 2025 - Jollibee Group (PSE: JFC), one of the world's largest and fastest-growing food service companies, reported robust financial results for the first quarter of 2025, reflecting strong performance both in its Philippine and international markets including continued momentum in key Asian markets such as Singapore, Vietnam, and (West) Malaysia. For the quarter ending March 31, 2025, the Jollibee Group reported system-wide sales (SWS) of Php 103.2 billion (US$ 1.76 billion), an increase of 18.9% compared to Php 86.8 billion (US$ 1.48 billion) in the same period last year. Consolidated revenues grew by 14.6% year-over-year to Php 70.2 billion (US$ 1.20 billion). This growth was driven by a combination of 5.5% same store sales growth (SSSG), mainly from volume growth and new store contributions. Same-Store Sales Growth (SSSG) in the Philippines rose by 8.5%, led by Mang Inasal (+15.9%), Red Ribbon (+11.1%), Jollibee (+8.6%), and Chowking (+6.2%). This drove an 11.9% increase in system-wide sales in Q1 2025, primarily fueled by higher transaction volumes. International SSSG grew slightly by 0.7%, with strong contributions from Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia (EMEAA) at +5.3%, North American operations of Asian brands—such as Jollibee, Chowking, and Red Ribbon—at +4.8%, Highlands Coffee +4.4%, Milksha +3.1%, and The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (CBTL) +2.8%. The China business declined by 8.3%, although Yonghe King showed sequential improvement in transaction count. Smashburger also posted an 8.0% decline in SSSG, mainly due to lower transaction volumes. Jollibee Group Global President and CEO Ernesto Tanmantiong commented, 'We are pleased with our first quarter performance, particularly the continued growth in international markets such as Singapore, where our brands are gaining deeper resonance with local and regional consumers. We are proud to see our brands thrive in diverse cultural settings affirming our belief in the global appeal of the Jollibee Group portfolio. We are also optimistic about the addition of another strong brand in our portfolio, Tim Ho Wan, which further strengthens our position in one of the world's most dynamic consumer markets and supports our long-term international growth strategy.' Jollibee Group's international business saw system-wide sales (SWS) increase by 29.5%. This performance was significantly supported by the acquisition of Compose Coffee, which contributed 17.8% to the international business' SWS growth. The Group's Coffee and Tea segment—now comprising 45.4% of its international SWS—recorded a 62.2% increase, with Compose Coffee accounting for 49% of this growth. Tim Ho Wan, now 100% owned by the Jollibee Group effective 02 January 2025, contributed to the international business' growth in the quarter. Flagship brand Jollibee system-wide sales rose by 13.9% globally, with standout performances in several international markets. The Philippines recorded 13.3% growth, China (Hong Kong and Macau) 12.9%, North America 10.9%, Southeast Asia 27.8%, the Middle East 12.9%, Europe 10.9%, and Guam 20.2%. These results underscore the Jollibee brand's growing global appeal and its positioning to win with consumers across diverse international markets. Singapore alongside other Southeast Asia markets continue to play an important role in the Group's expansion, reflecting increased brand recognition and strong operational performance in the region. Operating income grew by 17.6% to Php 4.8 billion (US$ 81.9 million), despite a 56.2% increase in advertising and promotions aimed at building brand equity and expanding market reach. The corresponding margin improved by 10 basis points due to higher gross profit levels and a modest rise in general and administrative expenses. Net income attributable to equity holders of the Parent Company (NIAT) decreased by 8.1% to Php 2.4 billion (US$ 41.0 million), driven by higher below-the-line items. However, quarter-on-quarter, both operating income and NIAT increased by double digits. The year-over-year NIAT decline was largely due to non-operational factors. Jollibee Group Global Chief Financial and Risk Officer Richard Shin commented, 'We delivered strong revenue and operating income growth while investing meaningfully in brand building. Our disciplined execution and solid operational fundamentals helped us expand margins, even with elevated promotional spending. We remain confident in achieving our full-year 2025 guidance.' As of March 2025, the Jollibee Group's global store network increased by 44.3% year-over-year to 9,935 stores. This includes 3,393 stores in the Philippines and 6,542 stores internationally, comprising 560 in China, 361 in North America, 393 in EMEAA, 865 with Highlands Coffee primarily in Vietnam, 1,246 with CBTL, 340 with Milksha, 2,700 with Compose Coffee, and 77 with Tim Ho Wan. The Jollibee Group's performance in Q1 2025 reflects its focused execution and the strength of its global portfolio. The continued success in Southeast Asia, including Singapore, supports its ambition to become one of the top five restaurant companies in the world. Corporate Action On the corporate governance front, the Jollibee Group's Board of Directors approved the declaration of a regular cash dividend of Php 1.33 (US$ 0.024) per share of common stock on April 14, 2025. The dividend was released on May 16, 2025, to shareholders of record as of May 2, 2025. Palm follows rival oils higher
JAKARTA: Malaysian palm oil futures rose for a second session on Tuesday, tracking Chicago soyoil and Dalian palm oil higher, with a weaker currency adding support. The benchmark palm oil contract for September delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange gained RM19, or 0.47 per cent, to RM4,090 (US$965.76) a metric ton by 0232 GMT. Dalian's most-active soyoil contract slipped 0.1 per cent, while its palm oil contract gained 0.85 per cent. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade rose 0.28 per cent. Palm oil tracks price movements of rival edible oils, as it competes for a share of the global vegetable oils market. Oil prices eased on Tuesday after rising almost 2 per cent in the previous session, as investors assessed new developments on US tariffs and a higher-than-expected OPEC+ output hike for August. Weaker crude oil futures make palm a less attractive option for biodiesel feedstock. The ringgit, palm's currency of trade, weakened 0.12 per cent against the dollar, making the commodity cheaper for buyers holding foreign currencies. Palm oil may retest support at RM4,032 per metric ton, as a correction from RM4,108 looks incomplete, Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao said. Stock markets in Asia took in stride the latest twist in US President Donald Trump's tariff roll-out on Tuesday, as the dollar held onto gains and oil retreated.
