Can't rule us out: Kieron Pollard on MI New York's odds-defying MLC 2025 win

India Today14-07-2025
Kieron Pollard delivered a stirring statement as MI New York completed a stunning turnaround to defeat the Washington Freedom and clinch the 2025 Major League Cricket title. The franchise endured a nightmare start to their campaign, losing six of their first seven matches and sitting at the bottom of the table with just two points. With elimination looming, few gave the 2023 champions a chance of survival, let alone a title run.advertisementBut MI New York showed resilience when it mattered most. They won two of their final three league games to sneak into the playoffs, and from there, pulled off a comeback for the ages. Speaking after the final, captain Kieron Pollard reflected on their incredible journey and the belief that kept them going.
'It means a lot. We fought hard. One in seven, everyone sort of wrote us off. I've mentioned it time and time again—there is something in this franchise. Until we are mathematically out of a tournament, you should not rule us out,' Pollard said.'The belief the guys showed, every single staff member—from the management to the players—it's unbelievable to be standing here and going to collect our second MLC trophy,' he added. The triumph was emotional for Pollard, who has faced a challenging few months off the field. At 38, questions about his future in the game naturally followed. But for now, the veteran all-rounder hasn't made any decisions on retirement.'Can't tell the future. But what I can tell you is I enjoyed my time here. When I came to this tournament, I hadn't played cricket since January. I had to leave the ILT20 because of my mum's passing,' Pollard revealed.'I was motivated. There were things behind the scenes as well which kept me going. This one feels good. A bit emotional. Deep down inside, a bit emotional. Dwayne Bravo—look at me now,' he said with a smile.Pollard's leadership, experience, and spirit once again proved decisive on the big stage. Regardless of what the future holds, this title win will go down as one of the most remarkable comebacks in the short history of Major League Cricket, and a fitting chapter in Pollard's legendary career.- EndsMust Watch

Ex-MI Teammate On Reason Behind Rohit Sharma's Test Retirement: "He Would've Known..."

Former West Indies captain Kieron Pollard spoke on former Indian Test skipper Rohit Sharma's retirement from the longest format. He believes that Sharma, having achieved a lot, knows what he wants for his career and emphasised that Hitman's pride in his performance will always be a driving factor. Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket in May this year, bringing down the curtain on a remarkable journey in whites. He will continue to captain India in ODIs. "It is a personal decision and he would have known why he [Rohit Sharma] wanted to do it. As an individual who has accomplished so much in cricket, he has it within himself to understand and know what he wants going forward. Again, pride of performance is always going to be there." Pollard told ANI. "He's still going to represent India in the 50-over format of cricket. I don't see him changing the hunger and desire not to score runs. He wants to come out and perform and do well," Pollard added. Pollard also expressed his joy in reuniting with former teammates and friends in the ongoing World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025. He highlighted the excitement of being competitive again and looks forward to these opportunities. "It feels great, again, reconnecting with your old teammates, old friends, persons that you don't see on a daily basis, you get an opportunity to be competitive again, it's just fantastic and we look forward to it," Pollard told ANI. West Indies Champions Team owner Ajay Sethi praised his team's players, highlighting their success in the IPL and T20 formats. He mentioned their wins against England and expressed confidence in their upcoming match against Pakistan. "They have been greatest player of IPL and T20 format, their records and their performance speaks for itself, this is my best team on the paper and they're performing, they won the England game and then we had the game against Australia, we have a big game tomorrow with Pakistan, I'm very confident that we will definitely go to perform and win the game," Sethi told ANI. West Indies Champions will take on Pakistan Champions in the 11th Match of WCL 2025 at Leeds on Saturday.

New Zealand Name Michael Bracewell As Replacement For Glenn Phillips For 1st Test vs Zimbabwe

New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell has been named as the replacement for injured Glenn Phillips in their first Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, scheduled to begin on July 30. Bracewell was initially unavailable for the series due to his commitments with The Hundred. He was named in the squad for the first Test after his schedule allowed him to be available for the series opener. Bracewell is in Zimbabwe as part of New Zealand's T20I tri-series. Phillips was ruled out of the Tri-series and the two Tests after he suffered a right groin injury during the final of the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 earlier this month. After the first Test, Bracewell will leave Zimbabwe and join the Southern Brave ahead of their first game. "Glenn's injury provided a gap in the Test squad, and Michael is the closest like-for-like replacement. Michael's experience and skillset will be a great asset and allows us to keep the same balance of the team," Blackcaps head coach Rob Walter said in a statement released by New Zealand Cricket. "Given he's here with the T20 squad and his availability aligned for the first Test, we're using the opportunity to include him in the squad. We'll get through the first Test and then we'll make a decision whether we'll replace him for the second Test," he concluded. After Phillips was confirmed to miss New Zealand's ongoing tour of Zimbabwe, Walter reflected on the impact of his absence and had said, "It's obviously disappointing to lose someone of Glenn's calibre. Much like Finn (Allen), we really feel for Glenn and that he misses out on this series. "We know he was eager to get out on the field for the Black Caps, and unfortunately, he won't be able to do that for this series. We know he'll work hard to get himself back onto the park, and I look forward to when that happens," Walter added.
