England's goalkeeping hero Hampton continues to prove people wrong at Euro 2025

The Sun19-07-2025
AS a bloodied Hannah Hampton saved two penalties to send England into the Euro 2025 semi-finals, it was all the more impressive given she was advised at a young age against pursuing football because of an eye condition that affects her depth perception.
The 24-year-old, who had gauze stuffed up one nostril throughout Thursday night's wild shootout against Sweden after an earlier collision, was born with strabismus, a condition that prevents the eyes from properly aligning. She underwent three surgeries before the age of three.
She has broken fingers and suffered bloody noses from misjudging the ball's trajectory. Even pouring a drink, she has said, is problematic.
But Hampton is not easily deterred, and enjoys proving people wrong.
'I'm here right now. You can't let all the scrutiny win,' Hampton told reporters recently. 'I think if you do that it just adds fuel to the fire and I wasn't willing to accept that.'
Hampton was thrust into the spotlight after the experienced Mary Earps announced her international retirement just weeks before the tournament.
She has shone at the Euros in Switzerland, making a couple of diving saves in normal time on Thursday before her shootout heroics, made more remarkable by the fact she had taken an elbow to the face minutes earlier.
'I said to her, you only need one nostril,' teammate Chloe Kelly said.
The Chelsea keeper also made headlines last week when her brilliant long ball led to a goal in their 4-0 thrashing of the Netherlands in the group stage.
'She made a massive contribution to a very good team performance,' coach Sarina Wiegman said. 'The outcome was really good and how the team stuck together, but she had a big contribution to that.'
Hampton was a backup to Earps when England won the 2022 European title, but was dropped from the squad soon after amid media reports about her attitude and behaviour.
She said the negative commentary almost made her quit.
Hampton was all smiles on Thursday, even taking a Facetime call with family and friends during her post-game press conference.
'I'm in a presser!' Hampton yelled to a family member, before turning the phone screen so they could see the packed media conference. Her family and friends cheered.
The Birmingham-born keeper spent much of her childhood in Spain, attending the British School of Vila-real where her parents worked as teachers.
She played as a striker for Villarreal's academy team.
Sweden's goalkeeper Jennifer Falk saved four of England's shots in Thursday's shootout before stepping up to boldly take one of her own. A goal would have clinched victory for Sweden, but Falk fired her shot over the crossbar.
Asked if she had considered taking a penalty herself, Hampton laughed.
'They told me to focus on the saving part first and then when it comes to it I would've taken one,' Hampton said. 'I get a bit excited – my striker instincts come out.'

West Ham's Paqueta cleared of betting allegations

Lucas Paqueta was cleared of spot-fixing charges by an independent regulatory commission. (EPA Images pic) LONDON : West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta has been cleared of spot-fixing charges by an independent regulatory commission, the club announced today. The Brazil international was charged with four alleged breaches of Football Association (FA) rules in relation to matches involving the Premier League side. It was alleged the 27-year-old directly sought to influence games by intentionally seeking to receive a card from the referee for the 'improper purpose of affecting the betting market'. The four charges against Paqueta related to a game against Leicester in November 2022 and matches against Aston Villa, Leeds and Bournemouth in 2023. He was facing the prospect of a lifetime ban if found guilty. The Brazilian denied the charges and the independent regulatory commission found them not proven following a hearing. The FA said two charges against Paqueta, related to a failure to cooperate with its investigation, had been found proven. It said a commission would decide on an appropriate sanction for those proven breaches 'at the earliest opportunity'. The Brazilian, who joined West Ham in 2022, said in a club statement that he had always maintained his 'innocence against these extremely serious accusations'. 'I can't say anything more at this time, but I would like to express how grateful I am to God and how eager I am to return to playing football with a smile on my face,' he said. 'To my wife who never let go of my hand, to West Ham United, to the fans who always cheered me on, and to my family, friends and the legal team who have supported me.' West Ham United vice-chair Karren Brady said: 'We are pleased Lucas has been cleared. He has maintained his innocence from the outset, and as a club we have resolutely stood by him and supported him throughout the process.' Alastair Campbell, a partner at the law firm Level and the head of Paqueta's legal team, said: 'Few cases carry the gravity of this one – professionally, personally and emotionally for our client. 'Lucas has faced down immense pressure with remarkable strength and resilience.' The FA said it was awaiting the written reasons from the independent commission in relation to its decision on the charges, and would not be commenting further until that time. Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali was given a suspended two-month ban in May last year over breaches of betting rules. It came as the Italian international was serving a 10-month ban handed down by the Italian authorities for betting offences.

Nottingham Forest sign winger Ndoye from Bologna

Dan Ndoye scored the winning goal for Bologna in the Coppa Italia final against AC Milan. (EPA Images pic) LONDON : Nottingham Forest have signed Swiss winger Dan Ndoye from Serie A side Bologna on a five-year deal, the Premier League club said today. Financial details of the transfer were not revealed by either club but British media reported Forest paid a fee of around £34 million for the 24-year-old Switzerland international. Ndoye joined Bologna in August 2023 from Swiss side Basel for around €10 million. He made 41 appearances for Bologna across all competitions last season, scoring nine goals and registering six assists. He scored the winning goal against AC Milan in the Coppa Italia final, helping Bologna secure their first major trophy in 51 years. 'It is a really exciting time at Forest and I knew straight away that I wanted to be a part of the project. It's a really ambitious team with a fantastic history and I can't wait to get started,' Ndoye said. Ndoye could take the place of former Forest winger Anthony Elanga, who joined Newcastle United earlier this month and also played mainly on the right, like Ndoye. Since making his international debut in 2022, Ndoye has earned 22 caps for Switzerland, starting all five matches at Euro 2024 during their run to the quarter-finals. Forest, who secured a solid seventh-place finish last season, begin their Premier League campaign at home against Brentford on Aug 17.

Cricket-England's Woakes out of final test v India with shoulder injury

Cricket - International Test Match Series - Fifth Test - England v India - Kia Oval, London, Britain - July 31, 2025 England's Chris Woakes reacts as he leaves the field after sustaining an injury Action Images via Reuters/Paul Childs (Reuters) -England all-rounder Chris Woakes will miss the remainder of the fifth and final test match against India after suffering a shoulder injury while fielding, the country's cricket body (ECB) said on Friday. England lead the five-match series 2-1, with hosts India at 204-6 at the end of day one of the final test at The Oval on Thursday. Woakes picked up the injury after falling heavily as he dived to try to prevent a boundary by Karun Nair at long-off. "England seamer Chris Woakes will continue to be monitored throughout the remainder of the Rothesay Fifth Test at The Kia Oval, following a left shoulder injury sustained on day one of the match against India," ECB said in a statement. "At this stage, the injury has ruled him out of any further participation in the Test. "A further assessment will be conducted at the conclusion of the series." Woakes had bowled 14 overs while conceding 46 runs on Thursday and took out India opener KL Rahul for his only wicket of the day. England are already without captain and all-rounder Ben Stokes, also due to a shoulder injury. (Reporting by Pearl Josephine Nazare in Bengaluru; Editing by Ros Russell)
