MUSCAT: His Highness Sayyid Asaad bin Tariq al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs and Special Representative of His Majesty the Sultan, inaugurated the International Conference of the Energy Regulators Regional Association (ERRA), the first such conference to be held in the Middle East. Organized by the Sultanate of Oman through the Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR), the conference attracted more than 280 professionals from 50 countries. Featuring policymakers, regulators, academics, and private sector leaders, the conference highlighted Oman's growing stature in the global energy market and its resolve to shape the future for sustainable energy governance.
The conference, which was recognized as a strategic platform to advance sustainability and regulatory excellence, welcomed Oman hosting 47 organizations from across the globe. Senior-level discussions included specialist scientific workshops on global energy transformation and investing in clean energy technologies. Bilateral meetings and technical exchanges between international institutions and private sector stakeholders were also facilitated, with a view to forging regional partnerships and enhancing technical cooperation in new energy projects. The event also reaffirmed Oman's status as a visionary and trustworthy partner within the global energy community.
Dr Mansoor bin Talib al Hinai, Chairman of the Authority for Public Services Regulation stated, "The Sultanate of Oman, via the Authority for Public Services Regulation, is hosting the high-profile Energy Regulators Regional Association (ERRA) conference, and for the first time in the history of the Middle East. This historic move shows Oman's growing leadership in the management of the important energy sector and its commitment to encouraging the spread of sustainable practices across the region.".
Dr Al Hinai added: 'The conference is a significant forum for the exchange of international experience to the benefit of private sector participants, regulatory institutions, and government agencies. Key topics include increasing the share of renewable energy in electricity production, challenges related to this, encouraging green finance, and highlighting international and local efforts—Oman among them—towards achieving net-zero emissions through the use of alternative energy solutions."
Eng Abdullah bin Saeed Al Badri, APSR Advisor, stated: "Oman reaffirmed its ambitious clean energy transition plans to generate 30% of its electricity from renewables by 2030 and 40% or more by 2040. These goals were put in the spotlight at the Energy Regulators Regional Association (ERRA) Conference, hosted for the first time in the Middle East region by the Sultanate."
Andrijana Nelkova-Chuchuk, Chair of ERRA, and Head of Economic Department, Energy, Water Services and Municipal Waste Management Services Regulatory Commission (ERC), remarked: "Our association is a community of independent regulatory bodies from over 45 countries on five continents. We are especially proud of the presence of our members from the Gulf region, including regulators from Oman, Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai."
She continued to state, "The event is taking place in a strategically important part of the world, and it is taking place at a moment of great complexity in the international energy environment. We're witnessing robust growth along with serious challenges, including those of the ongoing energy transition and recent global policy changes."
"Effective regulation is our answer to these challenges, and we welcome this conference as a means of sharing knowledge and experience to the purpose of our association—as we all strive for the best for the future of the energy industry," she added.

ERRA strengthens global leadership with the signing of the UAE's first blanket reprographic rights licensing agreement

Sharjah – Building on its growing international presence in intellectual property protection while reinforcing the UAE's standing as a regional and international hub in this field, the Emirates Reprographic Rights Management Association (ERRA) has announced the signing of the country's first-ever blanket reprographic rights licensing agreement with Heriot-Watt University Dubai. This pioneering step sets a new benchmark for regulating the use of intellectual works within academic institutions. This agreement is the outcome of ERRA's ambitious and strategic path since its establishment. In less than three years, the Association has successfully established a strong international presence in the field of collective reprographic rights management, having concluded six landmark agreements with counterpart organisations in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Argentina, Malaysia, and Hong Kong, in addition to an ongoing collaboration with India. ERRA has also secured membership in the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organisations (IFRRO) and obtained Observer status with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). These recognitions reflect the confidence of international institutions in ERRA's capability to regulate the use of intellectual works and protect the rights of authors and publishers in accordance with global best practices, granting it an influential position in shaping intellectual property policies worldwide. The licence granted to Heriot-Watt University Dubai provides lawful, organised access to a vast repository of books and academic materials under reprographic rights. It also reinforces the university's institutional commitment and academic leadership in upholding the rights of authors and creators. From Foundation to Empowerment Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Honorary President of ERRA, praised this achievement as an important milestone that reflects a clear vision and a strong institutional will to build a comprehensive framework for the protection of authors' rights in the UAE. She also highlighted it as a practical model of what can be achieved through collaboration between educational institutions and intellectual property stakeholders. She said: 'We take great pride in the strategic strides made by ERRA towards strengthening the legislative and cultural infrastructure for reprographic rights protection. The signing of the blanket licensing agreement with Heriot-Watt University Dubai marks a pivotal moment, underscoring the Association's organisational maturity and its ability to swiftly move from the foundational phase to a stage of empowerment and tangible influence across educational and cultural institutions.' She added: 'We believe that respect for creative rights is the cornerstone of any sustainable knowledge-based renaissance. We hope this model will inspire more educational institutions to adopt this approach, one that fosters a fair knowledge environment that honours intellectual contributions and values creative effort.' International Recognition This milestone has also received international acclaim. Anita Huss, Secretary General and CEO of the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organisations (IFRRO), stated: 'We are pleased to see ERRA making steady progress in the effective implementation of collective rights management principles. The signing of the first blanket university licence of its kind in the UAE—at such an early stage in the Association's development—is a commendable achievement among emerging RROs in the international community. It reflects a clear and responsible vision towards the protection of authors' rights. At IFRRO, we regard ERRA as a proactive partner contributing to the establishment of fair and globally aligned practices in reprographic rights management. We encourage more of these partnerships, which play a vital role in ensuring equitable and secure access to knowledge content.' An Operational Milestone Mohamed Bin Dakhen, President of the Board of the Association, commented: 'The signing of this agreement with Heriot-Watt University Dubai marks a significant operational phase in the ERRA's journey, following a period of institutional development during which we established effective international partnerships that now enable us to represent a vast body of literary and scientific works. We are committed to embedding a culture of respect for intellectual property within the educational environment and aspire to build a fair knowledge ecosystem that honours the efforts of creators and ensures sustainable content production.' 'We hope this agreement will serve as a launchpad for broader partnerships with universities and academic institutions across the UAE, ensuring safe and regulated access to knowledge resources and contributing to the growth of the country's creative economy.' A Strategic Step For his part, Anas Abu Ghoush, Head of Information Services at Heriot-Watt University Dubai, stated: 'At Heriot-Watt University Dubai, we believe that true knowledge is built upon respecting those who create and share it with the world. Our partnership with the Emirates Reprographic Rights Management Association is a strategic step that enhances the quality of academic content we offer our students. This licence enables us to legally access and utilise thousands of works, which positively impacts our academic credibility and institutional ranking.' 'We are proud to be the first educational institution in the UAE to adopt this advanced model of reprographic rights respect, and we hope to serve as a role model for other academic institutions striving to establish a fair and sustainable learning environment.'

Are you ready for the new financial ecosystem taking over the world?

Sometimes‭, ‬I feel like I'm living in a parallel universe‭.‬ I've been learning about crypto since 2017‭ ‬and investing in it for the past two years‭. ‬And until last December‭, ‬I'd met almost no one who really understood what was going on in this space‭ ‬—‭ ‬let alone anyone who was actually in it‭.‬ That changed at the Bitcoin MENA conference last year‭, ‬my first such event‭, ‬where I found my people‭. ‬Speaker after speaker echoed what I'd been sensing‭, ‬but still wasn't sure about‭: ‬that a new undeniable and unstoppable financial ecosystem is emerging‭. ‬All while the majority of people remain oblivious‭. ‬ I get it‭. ‬I've been here before‭. ‬In the late 1990s‭, ‬I took a basic weekend HTML coding course back in Canada‭. ‬No one in my circle was doing‭ ‬anything like that‭, ‬and I wondered if I was a bit crazy‭ ‬—‭ ‬but if I was‭, ‬then my fun fellow classmates were‭, ‬too‭. ‬I didn't pursue HTML‭, ‬and regrettably didn't invest in any web projects‭, ‬but I left with enough of a clue to understand what was happening a few years later as newsrooms started going digital‭.‬ It's a situation that feels very familiar now‭. ‬And everywhere I look‭, ‬daily‭, ‬there are signs of a paradigm shift‭.‬ The meme that made me laugh out loud this week featured a sketch of a guy on an old-school phone‭, ‬saying‭: ‬'I'd like a wake-up call‭.‬'‭ ‬Underneath‭, ‬a woman replies‭: ‬'There's only ever going to be 21‭ ‬million Bitcoin‭.‬'‭ ‬That's it‭. ‬That's whole joke‭. ‬It's brilliant‭. ‬Too bad there's no one around for me to show it to‭.‬ The use cases for Bitcoin and the range of tokens go far beyond buying low and selling high‭. ‬The US Federal Housing Finance Agency just announced that crypto can now count as a borrower asset in mortgage applications‭ ‬—‭ ‬as long as it's held on a regulated US exchange‭. ‬That means you might soon be able to use Bitcoin as collateral to buy a house‭. ‬ This signals trust in crypto‭ ‬—‭ ‬and in the exchanges that hold it‭. ‬The best of them may become banks in their own right‭, ‬just not the kind we're used to‭.‬ Institutional investment is flooding in‭. ‬In April‭, ‬major US firm Cantor Fitzgerald announced a‭ $‬3.6‭ ‬billion‭ (‬Dh13.2‭ ‬billion‭) ‬crypto venture with Tether and SoftBank‭, ‬based on the way Michael Saylor's company Strategy acquires Bitcoin for investors using traditional financial tools‭.‬ Strategic asset More and more traditional financial analysts and CEOs are starting to describe Bitcoin as a long-term strategic asset‭. ‬Even with‭ ‬the recent geopolitical tension‭, ‬which would have sent it crashing in the past‭, ‬Bitcoin dipped briefly below‭ $‬100,000‭ (‬Dh367,300‭) ‬—‭ ‬before becoming poised for a new all-time high‭.‬ What's happening right now is that the global financial system is moving on-chain‭. ‬Crypto isn't fringe anymore‭ ‬—‭ ‬it's foundational‭.‬ In the UAE you can now pay for your taxi fare in AE Coin‭ (‬AEC‭), ‬a regulated stablecoin backed by the dirham‭. ‬The Dubai Department of Finance has partnered with to allow people to pay for government services with digital currencies‭. ‬Here in the UAE‭, ‬blockchain events regularly draw huge crowds‭. ‬The country is known for being a global crypto hub‭ ‬—‭ ‬one that is years ahead in both infrastructure‭ ‬ and regulation‭.‬ This is how adoption works‭ ‬—‭ ‬bit by bit‭, ‬until one day it's everywhere‭.‬ In the US‭, ‬the Senate recently passed the Genius Act‭, ‬a bipartisan bill creating a regulatory framework for stablecoins‭. ‬Trump called it‭ ‬'pure genius'‭, ‬saying it would make America the leader in digital assets‭.‬ There is a huge runway for stablecoins‭, ‬which serve as a bridge between the traditional and digital financial worlds‭. ‬As Citi reported recently‭, ‬the stablecoin market could hit‭ $‬3.7‭ ‬trillion‭ (‬Dh13‭ ‬trillion‭) ‬by 2030‭. ‬To put that in perspective‭, ‬the total crypto market cap as of now is about‭ $‬3.45‭ ‬trillion‭ (‬Dh12‭ ‬trillion‭).‬ The biggest players‭? ‬Circle‭ (‬which issues USDC‭) ‬and Tether‭ (‬issues USDT‭), ‬which are quietly evolving into some of the largest financial firms on the planet‭. ‬ Across the globe‭, ‬momentum is building in other areas too‭. ‬In just a smattering of signs‭: ‬Bhutan is now the world's third-largest Bitcoin holder‭. ‬Coinbase is buying BTC weekly‭. ‬Ethereum ETFs are setting records and one month after Coinbase joined the S&P 500‭; ‬on‭ ‬the index that tracks the 500‭ ‬largest publicly traded US companies‭, ‬it was the top performer‭.‬ In seven years‭, ‬I've watched crypto go from being dismissed as a scam to all of the above‭. ‬And still‭, ‬most people don't know about it‭ ‬—‭ ‬and don't seem to want to‭.‬ If you're still reading‭, ‬congratulations‭. ‬You've answered your wake-up call‭. ‬You're in the smart money minority‭. ‬And lucky for you‭, ‬this is really just getting started‭. ‬ ‭ ‬ KT Luxe

GEMS Education eyes international expansion with ‘school-in-a-box' model

GEMS Education has launched a major new global venture — GEMS School Management (GSM) — aimed at delivering high-quality, future-ready schools through partnerships with governments, investors, developers, and school groups worldwide. The GSM programme, already in advanced talks with stakeholders in eight international markets, is built on GEMS' 65-year legacy in K-12 education. It offers a complete, end-to-end school solution — from design and staffing to curriculum, safeguarding, and digital systems — enabling the rapid launch or transformation of schools in as little as 12 months. GEMS Education unveils 'school in a box' At the core of GSM is the ASPIRE model, a proprietary 'school-in-a-box' framework developed by leading GEMS educators. The model supports British, American, Indian, International Baccalaureate (IB), and local curricula, with comprehensive blueprints covering curriculum plans, architectural guidance, recruitment, training, technology, and hundreds of pre-built operational systems. Robert Tarn CBE, Managing Director of GEMS School Management, said: 'We're working with partners who want more than just good schools – they want schools that set benchmarks. GSM brings the full force of the GEMS ecosystem to the table – from outstanding educators and global best practice to fully costed, turnkey models. 'Whether you're a government, a developer, or a school group seeking to scale or improve outcomes, we are ready to help you deliver.' GSM is designed for flexibility, offering curriculum-aligned models for both premium and mid-market segments. Options include premium British or American schools and more accessible Indian or IB schools, all customisable to local financial, regulatory, and cultural conditions. In addition to new school builds, GSM offers enhancement contracts for existing schools and education systems. These partnerships allow schools to scale or improve performance, while accessing the procurement advantages and economies of scale offered by GEMS. Sunny Varkey, Chairman and Founder of GEMS Education, said: 'Every child deserves access to world-class education, no matter where they are. GSM is how we share our legacy, our expertise, and our belief in education's power to change lives with partners who share our vision. Together, we will build schools that shape not only futures, but nations.' From flagship institutions in capital cities to community schools in underserved areas, Gems Education provides adaptable models, tailored contracts, and proven educational systems that deliver measurable impact worldwide.
