Ringgit opens higher against US dollar on upbeat China data

Malaysian Reserve16 hours ago
THE ringgit opened higher against the US dollar on Tuesday, in line with strengthening Chinese yuan supported by upbeat China's June economic data release, said an analyst.
At 8 am, the ringgit strengthened to 4.2445/2670 against the greenback, from Monday's close of 4.2505/2560.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the data from China, including exports, money supply and new loans, reflects the positive impact of recent economic stimulus measures.
'At the current juncture, the ringgit and Chinese yuan have positively correlated in the region of 80 per cent, with the yuan remaining stable against the US dollar,' he told Bernama.
Mohd Afzanizam said the ringgit's gains came despite the US dollar index (DXY) climbing to 98.106 points, as markets reacted to ongoing United States (US) tariff uncertainties and President Donald Trump's signals of willingness to negotiate, including with the European Union.
'Risky assets such as equities closed higher while the US Treasury yields were rising, reflecting concern over inflation,' he said.
Yesterday, Mohd Afzanizam said the ringgit closed 0.08 per cent lower against the US dollar to 4.2533.
'As such, expect ringgit to trade between 4.24 and 4.25 today,' he added.
At the open, the ringgit was higher against a basket of major currencies.
It advanced against the Japanese yen to 2.8720/8874 from Monday's close of 2.8858/8897, strengthened against the British pound to 5.6987/7289 from 5.7305/7379, and gained versus the euro to 4.9512/9775 from 4.9693/9757 previously.
The local note was also firmer against most ASEAN currencies.
It rose vis-a-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.3093/3271 from 3.3184/3229, rose against the Thai baht to 13.0660/1450 from 13.1213/1439, edged up against the Indonesian rupiah to 261.1/262.7 from 261.5/262.0, and appreciated versus the Philippine peso to 7.49/7.53 from 7.50/7.51. — BERNAMA

Safe Sailing: Dream Cruises & Thai Authorities Hold Safety Drills On Genting Dream

Dream Cruises, part of the StarDream Cruises brand, successfully conducted a comprehensive safety drill aboard the Genting Dream cruise ship on 9th July 2025, in close coordination with Thai maritime and emergency response authorities. The exercise reinforced the cruise line's unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety for its guests, crew and partners. As the Genting Dream approached Phuket, a simulated medical evacuation was carried out by a Royal Thai Navy helicopter, showcasing advanced coordination between air and sea responders. After docking at the Deep Sea Port, a series of real-time emergency response scenarios were simulated. The operation involved seamless collaboration between the ship's onboard safety teams and key Thai agencies, including the Marine Department, Port Authority, Royal Thai Navy and local emergency services. This joint drill highlighted a wide range of critical emergency preparedness procedures, including coordinated passenger evacuation protocols, onboard incident management and rapid medical response capabilities. It also provided an opportunity for cross-training between cruise ship personnel and Thai officials, ensuring seamless cooperation in the event of a real-life incident. These drills are part of the cruise lines' ongoing commitment to enhancing operational readiness and ensuring full alignment with international safety protocols and local regulations. 'Safety is the foundation of everything we do,' said Michael Goh, President of StarDream Cruises. 'The safety of our passengers, crew and the communities we visit is always our top priority. 'Drills like this ensure our teams are ready, coordinated and aligned with international and local safety standards. We deeply appreciate the professionalism and support of our Thai partners during this important drill.' Representatives from Thai maritime and emergency response agencies echoed the significance of the initiative, underscoring the importance of public-private cooperation in maritime safety preparedness. StarDream Cruises conducts regular safety drills for its brands – StarCruises and Dream Cruises in all its operating regions and remains committed to working closely with local authorities to ensure passenger security and confidence.

Trump announces Indonesia 'deal' after tariff threats

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he had struck a deal with Indonesia – without providing specifics of the agreement – a week after threatening steeper tariffs on the Southeast Asian country. "Great deal, for everybody, just made with Indonesia," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, saying that he worked with the country's president directly. "DETAILS TO FOLLOW!!!" The Trump administration has been under pressure to finalise trade pacts after promising a flurry of deals, as countries have sought negotiations with Washington to avoid Trump's tariff threats. But the US president has so far only unveiled deals with Britain and Vietnam, alongside an agreement to temporarily lower tit-for-tat levies with China. Last week, Trump renewed his threat of a 32 per cent levy on Indonesian goods, saying in a letter to the country's leadership that this level would take effect August 1. It remains unclear what Indonesia's new tariff level will be under the latest deal with Washington, Indonesia's former vice minister for foreign affairs, Dino Patti Djalal, told a Foreign Policy event Tuesday. But he added that insiders from the Indonesian government indicated they were happy with the new deal, adding that he expected further information in the coming hours. Trump, in April, imposed a 10 per cent tariff on almost all trading partners, while announcing plans to eventually hike this level for dozens of economies, including the European Union and Indonesia. However, just days before the steeper duties were due to take effect, he pushed the deadline back from July 9 to August 1. This marked his second postponement of the elevated levies. Instead, since the start of last week, Trump began sending out letters to partners, setting out the tariff levels they would face come August. The levy he cited to Indonesia last week was unchanged from the figure first unveiled in April. To date, Trump has sent more than 20 such letters to partners including the EU, Japan, South Korea and Malaysia. Canada and Mexico – both countries that were not originally targeted in Trump's "reciprocal" tariff push – also received similar documents outlining updated tariffs for their products. However, existing exemptions covering goods entering the United States under a North American trade pact are expected to remain in place. Analysts have warned that without trade agreements, Americans could conclude that Trump's strategy to reshape US trading ties with the world has not worked. "In the public's mind, the tariffs are the pain, and the agreements will be the gain. If there are no agreements, people will conclude his strategy was flawed," William Reinsch, senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, previously told AFP.

EU fails to approve new Russia sanctions, ball now in Slovakia's court, says EU foreign chief

FILE PHOTO: European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas arrives at the 5th EU-Southern Neighbourhood Ministerial meeting in Brussels, Belgium, July 14, 2025. REUTERS/Yves Herman/File Photo BRUSSELS (Reuters) -The European Union did not approve the 18th Russia sanctions package on Tuesday, the EU's foreign chief Kaja Kallas said after a meeting with EU foreign ministers in Brussels. She said she was "really sad" the sanctions did not get approved, but hopeful a deal will be reached on Wednesday, adding that the ball is in Slovakia's court. Slovakia has been blocking the EU's latest sanctions package until its concerns are addressed over a separate EU proposal to phase out imports of Russian gas by January 1, 2028. Sources told Reuters on Monday that all elements of the package had been agreed, although one member state still had a reservation about a proposed lower price cap on Russian oil. The European Commission last month proposed the 18th package of sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, aimed at Moscow's energy revenue, its banks, and its military industry. The new package proposes banning transactions with Russia's Nord Stream gas pipelines, as well as banks that engage in sanctions circumvention. It also proposes a floating price cap on Russian oil of 15% below the average market price of crude in the previous three months, EU diplomats have said.
