AAI seeks new handler at Chennai airport amid ongoing Çelebi's legal battle

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) informed the Madras High Court on Monday that it must appoint a new ground handling and cargo operator for Chennai International Airport, following the termination of Turkish firm Çelebi Airport Services India's contract over national security concerns.
Appearing before Justice Abdul Quddhose, Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta said the airport requires a minimum of three ground handlers to maintain uninterrupted operations. With Çelebi's removal, the AAI is compelled to initiate a fresh tendering process to fill the operational gap, according to a report by Bar and Bench.
However, the AAI clarified that any new appointment would be provisional and subject to the outcome of ongoing legal proceedings initiated by Çelebi in both the Madras and Delhi High Courts.
The Turkish company is contesting the cancellation of its contracts at various Indian airports, as well as the underlying reason — the withdrawal of its security clearance by India's Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS).
Çelebi contract terminated over security concerns
The BCAS revoked Çelebi's clearance following geopolitical tensions, after Turkey expressed support for Pakistan during a recent four-day conflict with India. Çelebi has challenged this decision in multiple courts, including those in Bombay and Gujarat.
HC allows AAI to proceed with new appointment
The Madras High Court allowed the AAI to proceed with appointing a new ground handler, but only on a provisional basis, subject to the outcome of ongoing legal proceedings. The court permitted Çelebi to request an official inventory of its assets from the AAI. The court also ruled that either party could return to court if any of the undertakings, such as not using Çelebi's equipment or software, were violated.
In addition to the ongoing proceedings in Chennai, Çelebi has filed a writ petition specifically challenging the revocation of its security clearance. The matter is listed for hearing on June 24. A parallel case related to the company's role at Delhi International Airport is under consideration by the Delhi High Court, where judgment has been reserved.
The Madras High Court will resume hearing the original application concerning the Chennai airport contract on July 7.

Are Indian MBA Aspirants Ditching US For India? LinkedIn Post Sparks Debate

Many Indian MBA aspirants are rethinking their plans to study in the United States and instead choosing top B-schools within the country. A recent LinkedIn post claims this shift is due to ongoing immigration issues in the US and rising anti-Indian sentiment. The post has sparked a wide range of reactions online, with many questioning if this is a temporary trend or a real change in mindset. The post was shared on the professional networking platform LinkedIn by user Aviral Bhatnagar. It cites a professor from IIM Ahmedabad and reads: "Spoke to one of my IIM A professors who is also a chairperson. He was upbeat about students this year, saying that many US MBA aspirants are choosing to study in India due to immigration chaos. Fascinating that the on-ground impact is almost immediate, talent is staying back." The post suggests that because of confusion and strict rules around US immigration, many students who would have gone abroad for an MBA are now staying back and applying to Indian institutes. It points to an immediate impact being seen at ground level in top institutes like IIMs. While NDTV cannot verify the authenticity of the conversation quoted in the post, it has triggered mixed reactions online. Comments on the post reflect a wide range of opinions One user wrote: "The concept of brain drain is often viewed negatively in India, but it's actually a natural outcome of global economic forces... Trying to block this movement wouldn't create more jobs at home; it could lead to higher unemployment and underutilisation of skills." Another user said: "Talent is staying back? Too early to say that. There are chances that the same group of students would migrate overseas for their jobs after graduation. This is a temporary constraint." A third comment noted: "It's fascinating how these immigration challenges are turning into unexpected opportunities for india's business schools and creating this natural talent pipeline that benefits everyone locally." A fourth user pointed out: "Talent that's being forced to stay back due to geopolitical reasons only, is not going to stay back the moment things on that front change... the factors which forced leakage of talent from India are still the same." A fifth user added: "I think it's a temporary phenomenon... the only way we can take advantage is if we can sustain this trend and expand capacities in IITs, IIMs, AIIMS etc. Otherwise, it will only add competition in our already intense competitive landscape."

British Royal Navy's F-35B jet takes off from Kerala airport a month after emergency landing

A month after it made an emergency landing, the British Royal Navy's F-35B jet took off from the international airport in Kerala on Tuesday. The F-35B from the Royal Navy's aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales made the landing in Thiruvananthapuram when it was undertaking a routine flight outside the Indian air defence identification zone, which is a designated area of airspace extending beyond a country's sovereign territory. Thiruvananthapuram was designated as the emergency recovery airfield, a location where aircraft can land in the event of an in-flight emergency. Earlier, The Indian Express reported that the parking fee for the jet fight is being calculated as per the existing norms. 'It would range between Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000 a day. Besides, there would be a fee for land for the fighter jet and the Airbus. It is calculated between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 2 lakh. Air India will fix the fee for using their Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility at the airport,' told the official. A 14-memver team of engineers from the UK was in on a Royal Air Force Airbus A400M Atlas aircraft to assess and repair the fighter aircraft 'The UK has accepted the offer of a space in the Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility, and are in discussions to finalise arrangements with relevant authorities. The UK engineers are carrying specialist equipment necessary for the movement and repair process,' said the spokesperson. 'The UK remains very grateful for the continued support and collaboration of the Indian authorities and airport teams.'

Playing role of Kader Khan: Nishikant Dubey's jibe at Oppn over questioning reasons behind Jagdeep Dhankar's resignation

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament (MP) Nishikant Dubey on Tuesday jibed at the opposition after Congress MP Jairam Ramesh claimed that there was more to Jagdeep Dhankar's "unexpected" resignation as Vice President, implying that the opposition was being dramatic. "Opposition is playing the role of Kader Khan in the film," Dubey posted on X while citing a news report from December last year where the opposition parties moved to impeach Dhankar from the Vice President's office and accused him of being "partisan". Khan was an Indian actor, screenwriter and film producer who was known for his comic roles. Dubey said, 'Just now they came with a proposal to remove him. At least pay attention to his (Dhankar's) health.' His remarks follow Ramesh's statement that there was more to Dhankar's resignation "than meets the eye." "The sudden resignation of the Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha is as shocking as it is unimaginable. Until around 5 PM this evening, I was with him, along with several other MPs, and at 7:30 PM, I had a phone conversation with him. Undoubtedly, Jagdeep Dhankhar should prioritise his health above all else. However, it is also clear that there is more to his completely unexpected resignation than meets the eye. Nevertheless, this is not the time for speculation," the Congress leader posted on X. Ramesh highlighted his importance for the farming community and said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi must persuade Dhankar to change his mind. He added that the Vice President's resignation comes ahead of him making a crucial announcement related to the judiciary. "Jagdeep Dhankhar has taken both the government and the opposition to task equally. He had called a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee yesterday at 1 PM and was about to make some important announcements related to the judiciary," the Congress leader said. "We wish him good health and urge him to reconsider his decision. We also expect the Prime Minister to persuade Jagdeep Dhankhar to change his mind. This would be in the interest of the nation. It would be a great relief, especially for the farming community," he added. Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday evening 'to prioritise health care and abide by medical advice.' Dhankhar, the Chairperson of Rajya Sabha, sent his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu. Just now they came with a proposal to remove him. At least pay attention to his (Dhankar's) health. "To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the constitution," the letter read.
