Dalai Lama says he hopes to live more than 130 years ahead of 90th birthday
'I have been able to serve the Buddha dharma and the beings of Tibet so far quite well, and I hope to live over 130 years,' the Dalai Lama told thousands of followers who had gathered on Saturday in India's northern town of Dharamshala.
Dharamshala has been the Dalai Lama's home in exile since 1959 after he fled Tibet in the wake of a failed uprising against Chinese rule.
Since then, he has sustained Tibet's aspirations for greater autonomy under Chinese Communist Party rule and mobilised Tibetans inside and outside China.
On Wednesday, the Dalai Lama said that he intends to reincarnate, paving the way after his death for a successor to take on a mantle stretching back 500 years. Tibetan Buddhists believe the Dalai Lama can choose the body into which he is reincarnated.
That announcement ended years of speculation that started when he indicated that he might be the last person to hold the role.
The Nobel Peace Prize-winning spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhism also said that the next Dalai Lama should be found and recognised as per past Buddhist traditions, while stressing that his office will lead the search.
China views the Dalai Lama as a separatist and has insisted that only Beijing has the authority to approve his successor.
Meanwhile, the exiled Tibetan community of more than 20,000 people in Dharamshala is gearing up to celebrate the Dalai Lama's birthday on Sunday.
His followers have put up giant posters and billboards across town, as tens of thousands of people are expected to attend the event, including Buddhist leaders of various sects and followers from across the world.
Barbara Weibel, a US citizen who has been following Buddhism for more than 30 years, said she 'had to be here for this'.
'I want this long life ceremony to keep him alive as long as possible,' she said.

TAIPEI, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Former British prime minister Boris Johnson said on Tuesday that Taiwan did not deserve to be bullied by China and urged the West to build economic and political relations with Taipei in the face of Beijing's campaign against the democratic island. Johnson is the third former British prime minister to visit Taiwan, after Liz Truss in 2023 and Margaret Thatcher in the 1990s, and his trip comes at a time when Britain and China are seeking to further stabilise ties as Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to visit Beijing later this year. Britain, like most countries, has no formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan but the two governments have close economic and culture exchanges. "In very difficult and intense times, this is the moment for all western countries to build economic and political relations with Taiwan, not to tiptoe away from Taiwan at the pressure from any other country," Johnson told Taiwan President Lai Ching-te in the presidential office in Taipei. "There's absolutely no case for the current Chinese bullying of Taiwan. This is a free, peaceful society. It does not deserve to be intimidated in this way. There's no point in it and I hope it stops as soon as possible," Johnson said in video footage by Lai's office. Beijing has previously condemned visits by British lawmakers to Taiwan for what it calls interference in China's internal affairs. Johnson was invited to deliver a speech at a security forum by Taipei-based think tank, the Prospect Foundation, which was also attended by Lai earlier on Tuesday. At the forum, Lai vowed to build a "democratic supply chain" with allies by deepening economic cooperation and said he would boost Taiwan's defence spending to more than 3% of its GDP next year. "I'm confident that if democracies can join hands in creating more robust, more resilient global democratic supply chains, we can spur even more economic prosperity and further consolidate our democracy," Lai said. A British Royal Navy patrol vessel sailed through the sensitive Taiwan Strait in June.

Chinese government has 'final say' in Dalai Lama reincarnation, Tibetan official says
BEIJING, Aug 5 (Reuters) - The discovery of the next Dalai Lama will be carried out by the Chinese government, and not under the current Dalai Lama's directions, a Chinese Communist Party committee official for Tibet said on Tuesday. At his 90th birthday celebration last month, he assured followers that he would be reincarnated, and a non-profit institution he has set up will have the sole authority to identify his reincarnation. But Gama Cedain, the deputy secretary of the Chinese Communist Party committee in Tibet, said the Dalai Lama's reincarnation would be found using a domestic search and approval by the central government. "The central government has the indisputable final say in the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama," he told reporters at a press conference about the socioeconomic development in Tibet. He said that was the creed devotees adhered to, and the government's process follows the strict religious rituals and historical customs of the reincarnation of living Buddhas. "The reincarnation has never been decided by the Dalai Lama himself," he said. The current Dalai Lama, 14th in the line of spiritual leaders for Tibetan Buddhism, has said his reincarnation will be born outside China and ruled out Beijing's role in choosing his successor. China installed a Tibetan Buddhist monk picked by Beijing as the faith's No. 2 leader, the Panchen Lama, three decades ago after a six-year-old chosen by the Dalai Lama for the position disappeared in 1995.

Chinese students at UK universities being 'pressured to spy on classmates', think tank report warns
Chinese students are being pressured to 'spy on classmates' by officials back home, a new report claims. The UK-China Transparency (UKCT) think tank suggested the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is monitoring discussions on British campuses via students. It is thought the move is intended to suppress discourse on issues which are sensitive to the Chinese government. UKCT researchers questioned 50 academics working in the Chinese studies field and found many were concerned about the influence of Beijing. One lecturer said their Chinese students had 'confided' that they had been asked to spy on campus events by Chinese police. Another scholar said they were told by Chinese students that 'surveillance is omnipresent' and that they are 'interviewed by officials' when they return to China. The report also claimed Chinese government officials had warned lecturers to avoid discussing certain topics in their classes. It comes days after a new law came into force placing more responsibility on universities to uphold academic freedom and free speech. However, UKCT said some universities are reluctant to address the issue of Chinese interference because of their financial reliance on Chinese student fees. The report alleged that some Chinese academics involved in sensitive research had been denied visas by the Chinese government. Meanwhile others said family members back in China had been harassed or threatened because of their work in the UK. These sensitive topics included the alleged ethnic cleansing in China's Xinjiang region, the outbreak of Covid or the rise of Chinese technology companies, according to the report. Some academics reported intimidation by visiting scholars or other Chinese officials, as well as by staff at Confucius Institutes. These are partnership organisations operating at several UK universities, working with institutions in China. They promote Chinese culture and language on UK campuses, but have been criticised over alleged ties to the CCP. A Chinese Embassy spokesman said the country had always adhered to its policy of not interfering with other countries' internal affairs. They told the BBC the report was 'groundless and absurd', adding that China respects freedom of speech in the UK and elsewhere. A spokesman for Universities UK, which represents 141 institutions, said: 'Anyone working or studying at our universities should know that their rights to personal and academic freedom are protected when they are on British soil.' Skills Minister Jacqui Smith said any attempt by a foreign state to intimidate, harass or harm individuals in the UK 'will not be tolerated'. She said academic freedom was 'non-negotiable in our world-leading institutions', adding that the implementation of the new legislation made that 'explicitly clear'.
