Yahoo17-07-2025
Sixty-one people have died in a fire at a shopping centre in the eastern Iraq city of Kut.
It broke out late on Wednesday at the five-storey Corniche Hypermarket Mall, which only opened a week ago.
More than 45 people were rescued but others are still missing, according to the interior ministry and the Iraqi News Agency.
The ministry said most victims died from smoke inhalation and that 14 burned bodies were still unidentified.
Provincial governor Mohammed al Mayyeh declared three days of mourning and said legal cases had been opened against the owners of the centre.
"We assure the families of the innocent victims that we will not be lenient with those who were directly or indirectly responsible for this incident," he said.
The result of a preliminary investigation will be released within 48 hours.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al Sudani has ordered the interior minister to go to Kut to investigate and take steps to prevent a similar incident.

Italian Police Arrest 13 In Nationwide Crackdown on Chinese Mafia Groups

Italian police arrested 13 people in a nationwide sweep against Chinese organized crime groups, striking what authorities called a 'double blow' to criminal networks accused of drug trafficking, labor and sex exploitation, and money laundering. Multiple coordinated operations conducted across a total of 25 provinces, including Milan, Rome, Florence, Prato, and Catania, targeted Chinese mafia clans operating with mafia‑style intimidation and territorial control, according to a statement from the Interior Ministry and remarks by anti-organized crime police official Andrea Olivadese.

UK threatens jail for people smugglers who advertise on social media

LONDON (Reuters) -People smugglers who use social media to promote their services to migrants seeking to enter Britain illegally could face five years in prison under plans announced by the government. Prime Minister Keir Starmer's Labour government is under huge political and public pressure to cut the number of migrants arriving illegally in small boats from France. More than 25,000 people have made the crossing so far this year. Analysis by the Interior Ministry showed around 80% of migrants arriving on small boats had used social media during their journey to find or communicate with people smugglers. Under a new offence, which will be added to legislation already passing through parliament, individuals who post online to advertise services that facilitate a breach of immigration laws will face fines and prison sentences of up to five years. It is already an offence to facilitate illegal immigration to Britain, but the government said its latest plan would give law enforcement agencies another option to disrupt the criminal gangs that profit from organising the crossings. Last month, the government launched a new sanctions regime allowing it to freeze assets, impose travel bans and block access to the country's financial system for individuals and entities involved in enabling irregular migration.

At least 31 dead in Kyiv after Russian drone and missile strikes

Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Russian drones and missiles hit Kyiv in a barrage killing 31 and collapsing an apartment block. Three of the dead were children, ages 3, 6, and 17, Ukraine's interior ministry said. About 159 others were injured. Russia has continued its attacks despite U.S. President Donald Trump's threats to give Russia tougher sanctions if it doesn't agree to a ceasefire by Aug. 8. "Both Russia and Ukraine must negotiate a ceasefire and durable peace. It is time to make a deal," said acting U.S. acting representative to the United Nations John Kelley to the UN Security Council on Thursday. Senior police lieutenant Liliia Stepanchuk, a patrol officer who had served in Kyiv's police force since 2017, was killed in the attack. Her body was recovered from the rubble in Sviatoshynskyi district during rescue operations, the Kyiv Independent reported. Three police officers and 12 children were among the injured. Thirty people, including five children, are hospitalized, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. First responders are still working at the scenes of the attacks. Klitschko said the number of children injured was the highest recorded in the city since the beginning of the war. The deadliest attack on the capital was in December 2023, when 33 people were killed. Russian forces launched more than 300 drones and eight missiles against Ukraine overnight, targeting Kyiv and other regions, President Volodymyr Zelensky said. Aug. 1 has been declared a Day of Mourning in Kyiv. Flags will be flown at half-staff on all city buildings. "Today, the world once again saw Russia's response to our desire for peace, shared with America and Europe," Zelensky said in the wake of Friday's attacks. "But forcing Moscow to make peace, compelling them to come to a real negotiating table - all the tools needed for this are in the hands of our partners." Trump had previously offered a 50-day window earlier this month before the United States would impose 100% tariffs on Russia and its trading partners if Moscow fails to reach a peace deal with Ukraine. But during a press conference Monday at Turnberry in Scotland, Trump shortened that to a "new deadline of about 10 or 12 days from today." Copyright 2025 UPI News Corporation. All Rights Reserved.
