Arson and violence erupt from a trivial loan disagreement in KZN
A seemingly trivial loan of R200 erupted into a violent confrontation in Ethekwini, KZN, over the weekend, culminating in the arson of a vehicle.
The incident unfolded on Sunday and has left local residents shocked and fearing for their safety.
The complainant, a female resident of Waterloo, reached out to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) after an altercation with her male neighbour spiralled out of control.
According to police reports filed under Crime Administration System (CAS) number 491/06/2025 at Verulam SAPS, the event was sparked by a demand for repayment on a loan that had been extended to the woman's husband.
On Saturday, the woman was at her home with her three minor children when her neighbour allegedly confronted her, aggressively and demanded the R200.
Tensions escalated quickly when the man brandished a firearm and threatened to shoot through the wooden door of her home.
Terrified for her life and the safety of her children, she called her husband, who promptly paid the debt in hopes of diffusing the situation.
However, the issue was far from resolved. Just hours later, in the early hours of Sunday, the neighbour returned, intent on following through with violence.
The occupants called for law enforcement, but before help could arrive, the man vandalised a red VW Jetta parked nearby, smashing its windows and setting the vehicle ablaze.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with flames engulfing the car as the perpetrator fled the area, leaving extensive damage behind.
Images of the charred remains of the vehicle reveal the extent of destruction resulting from the neighbour's irrational actions.
In a bid to assist with the investigation, the RUSA Operations Center has since acquired a picture of the suspect and is prepared to release it to the public once clearance is granted by the investigating detective.
This incident raised questions about safety within communities and the consequences of seemingly minor disagreements spiralling out of control.
Fellow residents have expressed their alarm at the escalating violence, urging greater vigilance and reporting any suspicious activity to local authorities.

Simelane accuses DA of shielding man suspected of murdering her sister
CAPE TOWN - As the Democratic Alliance (DA) on Wednesday insinuated that Minister Thembi Simelane is unfit to manage a more than R30 billion Human Settlements budget, she hit back at the party, accusing it of shielding a man suspected of murdering her sister in an apartheid-era crime more than 40 years ago. Simelane said the DA's criminal complaint against her had not resulted in any charges, and the call for her to be fired is part of attempts to detract from the good work she's doing. ALSO READ: Simelane lashes out at detractors, says she's been tried in court of public opinion The former justice minister found herself in the DA's crosshairs in 2024, following investigative media revelations that linked her to the siphoning of funds from the now-defunct VBS bank. At a media briefing ahead of delivering the budget for the Department of Human Settlements, Simelane said that to reject the budget would be to delay even further the provision of decent homes for the millions of people living in the country's 475 informal settlements. In response to corruption allegations against her, Simelane said she won't shirk accountability, but the DA is jumping the gun. 'Now, if an investigation is being done, and you reported the case, but you can't wait for the investigation to be concluded, you now want other things before the investigation. I fear I'm going to disappear, honestly.' Simelane alleged that a former DA representative was involved in her sister's disappearance and death in the 1980s. 'In 2016, when I managed to file charges against him, it was only then that the DA suspended him. Even on my calls to the DA to get a statement of murder against my sister, they didn't. In 2019, three years later, he died.' Simelane also slammed the DA's governance in the Western Cape, saying it had returned R200 million in unspent funds meant for housing.

KZN teen dies after being struck by water-filled bottle in alleged act of frustration
KZN teen dies after being struck by water-filled bottle in alleged act of frustration A 16-year-old boy tragically lost his life on Monday night in a shocking incident at the Cornubia Flats housing complex, north of Durban, after he was struck on the head with a 5l bottle of water, allegedly thrown at him by a resident. According to Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa), its operations centre received a call from a distressed female resident requesting urgent assistance. Rising Sun reports that the 48-year-old woman informed the controller that two boys had been peeping at her through her kitchen door, something she claimed had become a daily occurrence. Frustrated and angered by the repeated incidents, the woman exited her home and threw a 5l plastic bottle filled with water at one of the boys. The bottle reportedly struck the teenager on the head, causing him to collapse. The woman told responders she believed the boy had died but was too shaken to confirm it. Upon Rusa officers' arrival, they discovered the teenager's body lying motionless in a neighbour's yard. He was found in a left lateral position and died at the scene. Residents helped confirm the teenager's identity. He was also a resident of the Cornubia Flats complex. His parents, who had been alerted by others in the area, arrived shortly after the incident. Verulam SAPS is investigating the matter. It remains unclear whether the woman will face charges.
