A federal judge extended a temporary legal block, preventing Idaho from enforcing a new law that would block people in prisons from accessing state-funded gender-affirming health care.
Judge David Nye last week extended a preliminary injunction blocking Idaho from enforcing the 2024 state law for all people in Idaho prisons diagnosed with gender dysphoria and receiving hormone therapy.
The Idaho Legislature in 2024 passed the law through House Bill 668. Nye has blocked the law from being enforced against people in Idaho prisons in response to a lawsuit brought by ACLU of Idaho.
Around 60 to 70 patients in Idaho Department of Correction custody have been diagnosed with gender dysphoria, according to documents released in the lawsuit last year.
Idaho's law 'clearly violates Idahoans' Eighth Amendment right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment by denying access to standard, life-saving health care,' ACLU of Idaho Legal Director Paul Southwick told the Idaho Capital Sun in a statement. 'Everyone deserves bodily autonomy and access to necessary medical care, regardless of their gender or incarceration status.'
The judicial blocks only last 90 days under limits by federal law. Boise State Public Radio first reported on the extended legal block.
The Idaho Attorney General's Office could not be immediately reached for comment.
Separately, a federal judge recently blocked federal prisons from enforcing an executive order by President Donald Trump that would've blocked gender-affirming care for people incarcerated in federal prison who have gender dysphoria, Bloomberg Law reported.

Zelenskiy Moves to Rein In Ukraine's Anti-Corruption Agencies

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy approved legislation to strip the nation's anti-corruption agencies of their independence, potentially hamstringing efforts to tackle high-level graft and shore up the rule of law. Zelenskiy signed a bill backed earlier by Ukrainian lawmakers on Tuesday, dismissing protests by the opposition and anti-graft groups and allies that such a move would set back the war-battered nation's efforts to fight corruption.

Anti-Israeli protester accused of torching NYPD cars charged as supporters cause chaos in court: ‘F–k peace'

A smug anti-Israeli protester charged with torching nearly a dozen NYPD cars was hit with criminal mischief charges Tuesday as a mob of unhinged supporters sparked a near-riot in Brooklyn. Jakhi Lodgson McCray, 21, strolled out of Brooklyn Supreme Court after being arraigned in last month's arson stunt that caused at least $800,000 in damages to police vehicles — with about a dozen keffiyeh-wearing trouble makers who berated cops and reporters with vulgar threats. 5 Supporters of accused cop car arsonist Jakhi Lodgson McCray cursed out police and reporters in Brooklyn court. AP 'You guys are f–king disgusting,' one wanna-be bully told reporters. 'You're a f–king piece of s–t.' One cop asked the mob, 'I thought you guys were all about peace.' 'F–k peace,' one punk fired back. The state court arraignment came one day after McCray, identified by law enforcement sources as a known 'Free Palestine' protester, was arrested on federal arson charges in the car-torching case. 5 Jakhi Lodgson McCray, 21, is charged in state and federal court with torching 11 NYPD vehicles on June 12. via REUTERS 5 Police said 10 NYPD squad cars and one trailer were burned at a Bushwick lot, causing $800,000 in damages. Gabriella Bass The charges stem from the early morning caught-on-camera incident at an NYPD parking lot just one block from the 83rd Precinct station house around 1:30 a.m. on June 12. A surveillance camera at the lot allegedly caught McCray setting fire to 10 squad cars and a police trailer before escaping through a hole in the fence at the Bushwick lot. Police recovered a cigarette lighter, 22 retail fire starters and 10 BBQ dragon egg fire starters at the scene — along with a pair of sunglasses that allegedly had McCray's fingerprints, the federal complaint said. In a statement in the federal case, US Attorney Joseph Nocella called the stunt 'deeply disruptive.' 5 Surveillance camera footage captured the arsonist who torched 11 NYPD vehicles on June 12. DCPI 5 Supporters of accused arsonist Jakhi Lodgson McCray shielded him from cameras and cursed out cops and reporters. In the state case, McCray was charged with criminal mischief, making graffiti and possession of a graffiti instrument, and was released without bail because the charges are not bail-eligible under the state's controversial 2019 criminal justice reforms. According to police, he is also linked to the destruction of a statue at Columbia University during an unruly protest at the Ivy League campus in September. In court Tuesday, McCray wore a dirty red hoodie and a mask, and looked cocky — at one point turning and waving at the group of supporters inside the courtroom. As he left court, three of them covered McCray in keffiyehs while cursing out reporters. He is due to return to court on Aug. 5.

Massie vows Trump's threats to primary him will ‘backfire tremendously'

Rep. Thomas Massie's (R-Ky.) vowed that President Trump's threats to primary him will 'backfire tremendously' and ultimately lead to Republicans losing their House majority in the 2026 midterms. 'Well, they've spent $1.8 billion against me so far in my congressional district. I think it has had very little effect, but they are trying to beat up on me to keep everyone else in line here and I think it is not working. I think what's gonna happen, this will be a referendum on whether the executive branch controls the legislative branch,' Massie said during a Tuesday interview with NBC News. 'I am going to prevail. What they are going to find out is it will embolden members of Congress here to go with their heart, with their minds, with their constituents and not just toe the party line,' Massie told NBC' Sahil Kapur. Trump's political operation has launched a targeted campaign seeking to oust Massie, who has regularly criticized the administration and refused to support its legislative agenda. Kapur asked Massie if he thought the president's effort 'will backfire in the next two years.' 'I think it's gonna backfire tremendously,' Massie said. 'Number one, I think they are wasting millions of dollars against me and they are going to lose the majority because of that, but number two, I think it will embolden Republicans who are right now quietly agreeing with me, but saying 'I am afraid of winning my primary, let's see if you can win yours Massie.'' Trump called the Kentucky lawmaker the 'worst Republican Congressman, and an almost guaranteed NO VOTE each and every time, is an Embarrassment to Kentucky' the president said in a Monday night post on Truth Social, linking to an anti-Massie ad released by pro-Trump PAC MAGA Kentucky. 'He's lazy, slow moving, and totally disingenuous – A real loser! Never has anything positive to add. Looking for someone good to run against this guy, someone I can Endorse and vigorously campaign for,' Massie was one of two House Republicans who voted against the president's 'big, beautiful bill' and has previously denounced the U.S. military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities on June 21, earning him rebukes from Trump and his allies. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) stopped short on Tuesday from endorsing Massie, saying 'bless his heart' when asked about his push for a bipartisan measure calling for the release of files related to Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender and late, disgraced financier. 'Some people seem to enjoy trying to inflict political pain on their own teammates. I'm not going to address anybody individually, but I'll tell you that some here are much more frustrated than others,' Johnson said during a press conference on Tuesday. 'One in particular just gives me lots of consternation. I don't understand. I don't understand Thomas Massie's motivation, I really don't,' the House speaker added. 'I don't know how his mind works, I don't know what he's thinking.'
