IDFC FIRST Bank launches UPI for Indians in 12 countries: How service works

IDFC FIRST Bank has rolled out UPI services for Indians in 12 countries, enabling them to use the digital platform to make payments in India without needing domestic SIM cards or incurring any transaction charges. Diaspora members can use the service by linking their international mobile numbers to NRE/ NRO accounts in India.
'Our vision has always been to simplify and enhance banking, making it accessible no matter where our customers are located,' said Ashish Singh, head of retail liabilities at IDFC FIRST Bank, in a press statement.
How it works
Using the IDFC FIRST Bank app, NRIs can:
Send and receive money using QR codes, UPI IDs, or mobile numbers
Pay Indian utility bills or transfer funds to friends and family
Complete transactions instantly with zero fees
UPI for NRIs:
Log in to IDFC FIRST Bank app
Link your NRE (Non-Resident External) or NRO (Non-Resident Ordinary) account
Create a UPI ID and start paying
This move follows a decision by the National Payments Corporation of India, which operates UPI (Unified Payments Interface), to extend the digital payments service to NRIs by using international mobile numbers. The feature is live for Indians living in Australia, Canada, France, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, UAE, UK, and USA.
Other banks and apps also support UPI for NRIs
A clutch of other Indian banks already offers this facility. These include State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank, among others, according to the NPCI's official list of 'UPI for NRIs - Live Members'.
Popular UPI apps that support international mobile numbers for NRI transactions include:
BHIM
PhonePe
FedMobile (Federal Bank)
iMobile (ICICI Bank)
BHIM IndusPay (IndusInd Bank)
SIB Mirror+ (South Indian Bank)
BHIM AU (AU Small Finance Bank)
These apps allow NRIs to access UPI from abroad as long as the payments are for transactions within India. With no requirement for an Indian SIM and zero transaction charges, UPI for NRIs adds convenience, security, and cost-effectiveness to international banking. Transactions are settled in Indian rupee and do not attract foreign exchange fees, making it ideal for regular India-based payments.
For those without NRE/NRO accounts, NPCI's UPI ONE WORLD initiative offers prepaid UPI wallets for international visitors to India, another step toward globalizing India's digital payments system.

India's rising middle class to drive global leisure travel boom

India's growing middle class and its younger, travel-loving population are set to play a major role in shaping the future of global leisure travel, a new report said on Wednesday. As more Indians explore new destinations, the country is emerging as a key contributor to what is projected to be a $15 trillion global leisure travel industry by 2040, according to data compiled by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). The report highlights that annual global consumer spending on leisure travel is expected to triple from $5 trillion in 2024 to $15 trillion by 2040, making it a larger industry than pharmaceuticals and fashion. This dramatic growth will be driven by rising incomes in developing economies and a growing preference for experiences over material goods. India's domestic leisure travel has already shown a strong recovery after the pandemic, with spending between 2019 and 2024 registering moderate to strong growth. BCG projects this momentum to continue, with domestic travel spending rising by 12 per cent annually, regional spending by 8 per cent, and international spending by 10 per cent. Overnight trips are also expected to grow steadily -- 3 per cent domestically, 4 per cent regionally, and 6 per cent internationally. Millennials and Gen Z are at the forefront of this travel surge, with their enthusiasm for travel outpacing older generations by up to 26 percentage points. In India, even Gen X remains a powerful travel segment, unlike in many developed countries where their influence is waning.

Tyre Exports Rise 9% To Rs 25k Cr

New Delhi: Tyre exports from India grew 9 per cent year-on-year to Rs25,051 crore in FY25 despite headwinds, including trade policy uncertainties and global supply chain disruptions, the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association said on Wednesday. With nearly 40 per cent of the industry's natural rubber (NR) requirement met through imports due to limited domestic availability, the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) said there is an urgent need to accelerate domestic production through focused interventions to meet rising demand. India's tyre exports in 2024-25 increased by 9 per cent year-on-year, reaching Rs25,051 crore compared to Rs23,073 crore in the previous fiscal, ATMA said, citing data released by the Ministry of Commerce. With an estimated annual turnover of Rs1 lakh crore and exports exceeding Rs25,000 crore, the Indian tyre industry stands out as one of the few manufacturing sectors in the country with a high export-to-turnover ratio, it added.

M&A activity hits $61.3 bn in H1 2025, highest since 2022: Report

India's mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity remained strong in the first half of 2025, with total deal value touching $61.3 billion, a new report said on marks a 50 per cent jump compared to the same period the previous year and is the highest first-half total since 2022, according to the latest India Investment Banking Review by LSEG. The report also showed that the number of M&A transactions rose by 9 per cent, signalling continued market growth was driven by domestic consolidation, energy transition efforts, and strategic portfolio realignments. Financial sponsors played a key role, particularly in sectors like insurance, technology, and healthcare. Elaine Tan, Senior Manager at LSEG Deals Intelligence, said: India's M&A growth is being powered by a mix of factors, including the country's push for renewables and structural changes in key sectors. 'Energy &Power led the way with $20.5 billion in deals -- a more than 16-fold jump from last year,' she said. Investment banking fees from Indian operations reached $653.8 million in the first half of 2025, up 21 per cent from a year from equity capital market (ECM) underwriting stood at $272.7 million, while debt capital market (DCM) underwriting earned $131.7 million. Domestic M&A was particularly strong, rising 138 per cent year-on-year (YoY) to $44.8 billion -- the highest since 2022. Meanwhile, inbound M&A fell to a nine-year low at $10.1 billion, while outbound M&A grew 74 per cent to $5.8 billion.
