India women's football team suffer narrow defeat against Uzbekistan
After a goalless first half, Diyorakhon Khabibullaeva (56') scored the only goal of the match to hand Uzbekistan the win on Friday night.
Keeping true to his words, India head coach Crispin Chettri introduced some fresh blood into the team, handing out three debuts against a strong Uzbekistan side. Attackers Manisha Naik and Malavika debuted from the starting XI, while midfielder Priyadharshini came off the bench in the second half for her first cap.
An even start to the match saw India earn a few corners, while goalkeeper Panthoi Chanu did well to keep the Uzbekistan attackers at bay in the opening exchanges. Panthoi, who marched in as the Blue Tigresses' captain on Friday, did especially well to collect the ball from Nilufar Kudratova in the eighth minute, after the Uzbekistan forward was played through behind the India defence.
As the game wore on, India began to gain more composure, building their own attacks in the Uzbek third. Soumya Guguloth, on the counter, threaded a pass through to Dangmei Grace, who had raced past the Uzbekistan back line, and only had the goalkeeper to beat. However, Maftuna Jonimqulova rushed out of her line and snatched the ball from the India forward's feet.
A little after the half-hour mark, Diyorakhon ran on to an aerial through ball, and had just Panthoi to beat. However, India centre-back Shilky Devi showed good presence of mind to contain the Uzbekistan forward with her physical presence, allowing Panthoi time to snatch the ball.
With the score level, India coach Chettri brought striker Pyari Xaxa into the game instead of Manisha Naik, thus pushing Grace into midfield. The move seemed to have been working in the initial stages of the second half, as India began to enjoy long bouts of possession in the Uzbekistan half. However, it also left them more susceptible to a counter-attack, which resulted in the deciding goal.
Maftuna Shoyimova, who was freed down the left flank, sent in a pinpoint cross into the India box, as Diyorakhon tapped it in from close range in the 56th minute, to give her side the lead.
Diyorakhon had a chance to double the lead on the hour mark when she tried to volley another cross, this time from the left, but the forward could not connect with the ball, as Panthoi plucked it out of the air.
India went searching for the equaliser with Pyari being the focal point. Phanjoubam Nirmala Devi sent in a looping cross from the right, which was headed goalwards by Pyari. However, the header lacked power and rolled wide with around 20 minutes to go.
Sumati Kumari, advancing down the right wing, sent a low cross to Pyari in the closing stages. The Indian striker trapped the ball and pulled the trigger from the edge of the box. However, Jonimqulova did well to produce a diving save to keep India out.
The two sides will meet in the second FIFA International Friendly at the Padukone-Dravid Centre for Sports Excellence on June 3.
The match will be streamed live on the Indian Football YouTube Channel.
India: Elangbam Panthoi Chanu (GK, C), Nirmala Devi Phanjoubam (Kiran Pisda 88'), Shilky Devi Hemam, Purnima Kumari (Ngangbam Sweety Devi 88'), Sangita Basfore (Lisham Babina Devi 88'), Soumya Guguloth, Sanju, Ratanbala Devi Nongmaithem, Grace Dangmei (Priyadharshini 74'), Manisha Naik (Pyari Xaxa 46'), Malavika P (Sumati Kumari 74').

‘Not in spirit of the game': Shubman Gill justifies his spat with Zak Crawley at Lord's, shares update on Akash Deep
Shubman Gill opened up on his heated exchange with Zak Crawley during the Lord's Test, accusing England of time-wasting tactics 'not in the spirit of the game.' Gill also shared updates on India's bowling options for the must-win 4th Test at Old Trafford. read more Shubman Gill has defended his actions on Day 3 at Lord's, where he got involved in an exchange with Zak Crawley. PTI/Reuters India captain Shubman Gill has finally spoken about his heated exchange with Zak Crawley during the third Test at Lord's, saying the situation built up after England's time-wasting tactics and was 'not in the spirit of the game.' India and England players were involved in several altercations during that game, which the home side eventually won by a narrow margin of 22 runs. The spat that caught the most attention was between Gill and Crawley on Day 3. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Gill explained what really happened in the final moments of Day 3 when Jasprit Bumrah was bowling. Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Gill accused the English batters of deliberately wasting time by coming 90 seconds late to the crease and then calling the physio to slow the game further. 'Yes, a lot of people have been talking about it. So, let me just clear the air once and for all. The English batsmen on that day, they had 7 minutes of play left. They were 90 seconds late to come to the crease. Not 10, not 20, 90 seconds late. Yes, most of the teams, they use this,' Gill said. 'Even if we were in a position, we would have also liked to play fewer overs. But there is a manner to do it. And we felt, yes, if you get hit on your body, the physios are allowed to come on. And that is something that is fair. But to be able to come 90 seconds late on the crease is something that is not in the spirit of the game,' he added. Also Read: 'Team always comes first': Irfan Pathan tells Bumrah to learn from Ben Stokes, put in extra effort for India Gill admitted that the reaction was emotional but pointed out it didn't happen suddenly. 'Just leading up to that event, a lot of things that we thought should not have happened, it had happened. And it's not, I wouldn't say it was something that I am very proud of. But there was a lead up and build up to that. It didn't just come out of nowhere,' he said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD He further explained the mindset in such tense moments. 'We had no intention of doing that whatsoever. But you are playing a game, you are playing to win and there are a lot of emotions involved. And when you see there are things happening that should not happen, sometimes the emotions come out of nowhere.' Shubman Gill also gave an update on the Indian team combination for the must-win fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester. 'Akash Deep is unavailable, so is Arshdeep, but we have good players in the team to pick twenty wickets. It is not ideal to have different bowlers but I was prepared,' he said. On the possibility of a debut for young pacer Anshul Kamboj, Gill said the decision will be made on the morning of the match. 'He is very close to making his debut. We will see between Prasidh and Anshul tomorrow,' Gill confirmed. Karun Nair to return to home state Karnataka for the upcoming domestic season
Batter Karun Nair is set to return to his home state of Karnataka for the upcoming domestic season, having obtained a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA). Karun, who is currently with the Indian Test team in England, spent two fruitful seasons with Vidarbha. The 33-year-old made runs aplenty in Vidarbha's Ranji Trophy title run earlier this year. Karun also led Vidarbha to the Vijay Hazare Trophy final. His fine form earned him a Test cap after a gap of eight years. Karun will add experience to a young Karnataka batting lineup, which includes the likes of Devdutt Padikkal, R. Smaran and K.V. Aneesh. Karnataka suffered a disappointing 2024-25 Ranji Trophy campaign, failing to make it to the knockout stages. Karun made his senior debut with Karnataka in 2012 (in a List A game), and last featured in a First Class match for Karnataka in 2022.

Beleaguered Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen will reach Paris early ahead of the World Championships in August and train at their National Centre, INSEP (National Institute of Sport, Expertise & Performance). Sen hasn't quite made the quarterfinals on the circuit in recent months, but believes that his preparation has been steadfast after emerging from a tough few months, dealing with shoulder and back injuries. 'Third set I didn't get a good start and then it was really tough to get back into the game. And he was also quite solid. After winning second set he was much more confident. Sen was especially happy with his speed. 'Physically I was 100 percent today. But past few months have been tough so trying to get back to full training.
