Thackeray cousins to share stage after two decades at joint Marathi identity rally
The joint celebration is being organised by the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). A public invitation released on Tuesday (July 1, 2025), titled 'Marathicha Awaaz', features no party symbols but carries the names of Uddhav and Raj Thackeray as co-hosts, along with a graphic outline of the State of Maharashtra.
'Marathi mothers, sisters and brothers, did we make the government bow down? Yes, we did make the government bow down! This celebration will be yours. We were only fighting on your behalf. Therefore, even while celebrating this joy, we are only the organisers of this gathering; the rest is for you to celebrate. Come, celebrate and burst with joy! We are waiting!' the joint invitation reads.
Confirming their attendance, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said the event would be a 'celebration of Marathi unity and pride,' and an assertion of regional identity.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday (June 29, 2025) had announced the withdrawal of the government resolutions that was proposed to introduce Hindi from Class 1 in State-run schools as part of a uniform three-language policy — a move strongly opposed by both the MNS and Sena (UBT).
The two parties had earlier announced a joint protest march but called it off after the withdrawal, calling it a 'victory of the Marathi manoos'. Mr. Uddhav Thackeray subsequently announced a public celebration on July 5 to highlight Marathi unity.
Reacting to the announcement of the joint rally, BJP MP and former Chief Minister Narayan Rane launched a scathing attack on Mr. Uddhav Thackeray, accusing him of pushing Mr. Raj out of the undivided Shiv Sena and now seeking reconciliation for political gain.
'Has Mr. Uddhav forgotten how he harassed Raj, causing him to quit the party? Now he is trying to butter him up in the name of brotherhood,' Mr. Rane posted on social media.
Mr. Rane went on to blame Uddhav for the decline of the original Shiv Sena, stating, 'Balasaheb Thackeray brought the party to power, but Mr. Uddhav lost it. He doesn't have the strength or ability to reclaim what was lost.'
He also pointed to the contributions of himself, Eknath Shinde, and Ganesh Naik to the Shiv Sena's growth, claiming they were discarded by Mr. Uddhav's leadership. Notably, Mr. Raj Thackeray had campaigned in support of Mr. Rane during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
In response, Bhaskar Jadhav, senior leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), questioned Mr. Rane's credibility and political consistency.
'Why is Narayan Rane so concerned about others? He left his own party within a year, then quit Congress. He must explain his own journey to the people of Maharashtra,' Mr. Jadhav said.
He also referred to Mr. Rane's recent remarks aimed at BJP Minister Ravindra Chavan, suggesting they revealed deeper political contradictions within the ruling coalition.

But what if a filmmaker decides to essay the aftermath of a tragedy that shook the nation? Filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor's The Hunt is one such show that chronicles what happened after how it happened. It's based on the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991. Shoojit Sircar's Madras Cafe showed us the before, Kukunoor focuses on the after. Despite being a web series that allows makers to explore as much information as possible, Kukunoor wastes no time and jumps directly to the Prime Minister's speech at a crowded fare being blown into smithereens. The way he stages those little shots and jump cuts shows his grip over the material. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Even the reaction shots don't feel theatrical or flimsy. The Hunt begins with an anonymous phone call to the Indian High Commission in Colombo. The receptionist is asked if the Prime Minister is alive. Her immediate response and discomforting close-up shows how there's going to be no room for theatrics here. The opening credits too do a fine job of absorbing the viewers into the world the makers have created. As the names begin to roll, the newspaper like visuals with moving images prepare us for the calamity in the series ahead. It's based on the book Ninety Days by Anirudhya Mitra. And Kukunoor chooses actors over stars. He wants vulnerability over vanity. He wants lesser seen faces to become more discussed names. It's tricky to go back in time but there's definitely something charming and quaint about nostalgia. When Amit Sial, who plays D.R. Kaarthikeyan (IGP CRPF) is informed about the assassination, the next scene sees him in front of a television watching the news. That was the time when media was yet to dive into cacophony and decay for the greed for TRPs. The way the reporter reads out the news about Rajiv Gandhi, you wish to listen to her again purely because how composed she's. In fact, everyone barely raises its voice in the series. Even when a character tells Sial this is going to the most challenging time for him, he calmly responds by saying he'll choose his own team. Kukunoor at times has faltered as a filmmaker but his fondness or fetish for slow-burn is just as fresh. He jumps to the point swiftly but moves ahead with the narrative with composure. The best example is his remarkable sports drama Iqbal that completes two decades this year. Even the turgid 8x10 Tasveer established the mystery around the plot and took its own sweet time to unveil all its cards. And with The Hunt, the filmmaker's ambitions must be lauded. It's a bold and precarious subject. It involves a giant of a political figure's assassination. It's fascinating how the makers refuse to conceal or change names and give them fictional stories. There are open references to IPKF and LTTE. In one key scene, Sial says how the Gandhi family is truly cursed. It's also fitting that Kukunoor and his writers Sriram Rajan and Rohit Banawlikar opt for a streaming format to tell this bone-chilling story of a dark chapter in Indian history. But they don't treat the subject as a documentary. It unfolds like a whodunnit. We have been told how it happened. Now the SIT has to figure why it happened, and by whom it happened. We have heard this booming background score before that's meant to add a tinge of urgency to the plot, but the way it all unfolds keeps the show going. And such stories need conversational treatment. There are endless discussions and questions that pop up among the characters. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD It will also be interesting to see the response The Hunt receives. The Rajiv Gandhi assassination is a chapter that unfolded 34 years ago. The pages of history books have been long forgotten as we moved towards our phone screens. It's also a horror that barely resurfaces on social media. We have faint memories of reading about the former Prime Minister. Getting to know about the brutality of his death now feels like going through mixed emotions. Should we describe this show as a brush with nostalgia? Is it a history lesson we ought to have been taught with more detail? Or should we treat this as another whodunnit? As stated above- We know what happened. Farmers sink deeper into debt but govt indifferent, says Rahul Gandhi
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in Maharashtra of "watching indifferently" while farmers were sinking deeper into debt. Gandhi targeted the government over the reported suicides of 767 farmers in Maharashtra during the past three months, an issue that was raised by the Congress and other Opposition parties in the assembly on Wednesday and staged a walkout. "Think about just three months, 767 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra. Is this just a statistic? No. These are 767 destroyed homes. 767 families that will never be able to recover. And the government? It is silent. It is watching indifferently. Farmers are sinking deeper into debt every day -- seeds are expensive, fertilisers are expensive, diesel is there is no guarantee of MSP. When they demand a loan waiver, they are ignored. But those who have crores? The Modi government easily waives their loans," Gandhi said in a social media post in Hindi. He said though PM Modi had said that he will double the income of farmers, "this system is killing farmers silently, but continuously, and Modi ji is watching the spectacle of his own PR."

Opposition seeks apology over MLC's ‘urban Naxal' remark on wari pilgrimage
Holding copies of the Constitution, Opposition leaders staged a protest on the steps of the Maharashtra Vidhan Bhavan on Thursday (July 3, 2025), condemning Shiv Sena MLC Manisha Kayande's remarks alleging the presence of 'urban Naxals' in the annual Ashadhi wari pilgrimage to Pandharpur. Leaders across the Opposition spectrum — including Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Ambadas Danve (Shiv Sena-UBT), Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar, and NCP (SP) leader Jitendra Awhad — accused the Mahayuti government of attempting to defame a centuries-old religious tradition and demanded an apology from the ruling alliance. 'This is not just an attack on the wari, but on Maharashtra's cultural identity. The government must immediately withdraw these remarks and apologise to the warkari community,' Mr. Danve said during the protest. The Ashadhi wari is a revered annual pilgrimage during which lakhs of devotees — known as warkaris — walk to Pandharpur to offer prayers to Lord Vitthal. Ms. Kayande, a nominated member of the Upper House, claimed in the Legislative Council on Wednesday (July 2, 2025) that urban Naxals had infiltrated the wari and were attempting to mislead devotees. 'Atheist individuals who do not believe in God have entered the wari. This is a serious matter. Under the guise of groups like Samvidhan Dindi, Paryavaran Wari, and Lokayat, they are staging street plays, delivering speeches, and influencing warkaris,' Ms. Kayande alleged. She also cited past instances where pieces of meat were reportedly thrown during the procession. She urged the Mahayuti government to act swiftly to preserve the sanctity of the pilgrimage and said the proposed Maharashtra Public Security Bill would help curb such disruptive elements. 'During last year's Lok Sabha elections, these same elements spread a false narrative about the Constitution being changed,' Ms. Kayande added. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who heads the Shiv Sena faction that nominated Ms. Kayande, told the House that the government had taken cognisance of the matter and had directed the Home Department to investigate the claims. Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam also said his office had received complaints about attempts by alleged 'urban Naxals' to disrupt social harmony and assured the House that the matter would be taken seriously. The Opposition, however, dismissed the remarks as baseless and politically motivated. They alleged that the comments were part of a deliberate attempt to politicise a spiritual event and discredit the peaceful warkari movement. 'This is an attempt to sow division under the guise of security concerns. The government must stop targeting religious gatherings with ideological labels,' Mr. Awhad said.
