Kolkata: Wajahat Khan , whose complaint led to the arrest of 22-year-old social media influencer and law student Sharmistha Panoli , was arrested on Monday by Kolkata Police Assam Police was searching for him while he had gone missing amid a number of FIRs against him over his offensive posts against Hindu deities and customs.With FIRs against him in three states and at a time Assam Police was ready to visit Bengal, Kolkata Police arrested him today.Kolkata Police said in a statement that 'during investigation of Golf Green P. S. Case no.76 dated 2/6/25 u/s 196(1)(a)/299/352/353(1)(c) BNS, the team of ARS DD conducted raid at Digha and Howrah and pursuing source information the FIR named accused person Wazahat Khan (29) who is a resident of Paharpur Road in Kolkata was arrested today.'Assam Police has alleged non-cooperation against Kolkata Police. Kolkata Police strongly refuted on Saturday 'the misleading claim being circulated on social media suggesting non-cooperation with Assam Police.''A team of Assam Police did approach the local police authorities under PS Garden Reach in connection with an investigation. All necessary assistance was duly extended to them. The team held raids with the assistance from the local Police station and there was no resistance or issues. The team is in regular touch with officers of Kolkata Police and necessary assistance is assured to them as required. We urge all to verify facts before making such unfounded claims,' DC Port had said on Saturday.The Calcutta High Court on Thursday granted interim bail to Sharmishta Panoli, a social influencer and fourth year law graduate, who was arrested by Kolkata Police from Gurugram on charges of hurting the religious sentiments of a particular community.

No one has the right to take the law into their hands; some people emboldened by the dispensation are attempting to create a Jangal Raj kind of situation in U.P.; it is a lynching attempt that aims to create fear,' said Imran Masood, Lok Sabha MP and a senior Congress leader. Lok Sabha MP from Ghazipur, Afzal Ansari, said, 'I condemn this incident, it is clear that the accused have no fear of the administration and rule of law. They know no proper action will be taken, and this encourages them to attack poor Muslims.'

Four held for cyber fraud
Kolkata: The Kolkata Police have arrested four persons allegedly part of a cyber fraud gang operating in Kolkata and Jamtara in Jharkhand, an official said on Sunday. Thirty-nine mobile phones, Rs 2.5 lakh in cash and multiple electronic gadgets have also been seized from their possession, they said. The action came on a complaint filed at Garden Reach police station, with the Port Division of Kolkata Police forming a special investigation team to probe the case of cyber fraud in which a fake website and customer care number of a private bank were used to dupe the victim of Rs 1.18 lakh, the official said. The four accused were arrested by the SIT for defrauding the complainant, he said. Further investigation is underway. PTI

Saikia: Ulfa-I victims' kin facing intimidation over Baruah's condolence calls
1 2 Guwahati: Family members of Ulfa-I personnel, who had lost their lives in the 'Myanmar drone strike', are experiencing police and Army intimidation for receiving condolence calls from Ulfa-I leader Paresh Baruah or posting their grief on social media, said Assam opposition leader and Congress senior member Debabrata Saikia. Saikia, who was visiting the party's general secretary of Charaideo district Bhoben Likson's residence in Sonari district, said, "Ulfa-I's military chief, Paresh Baruah, might have offered condolences to some of the cadres' relatives in Assam over the phone. Some of these relatives expressed their grief on social media over the loss of their family members in the drone attack. Now, these relatives are reportedly being harassed by Assam Police and the Indian Army for either communicating with Baruah or for their social media posts. They are being falsely accused of having links with Ulfa-I and are imprisoned."
