Ayo Edebiri Built ‘Barney' Pitch During Asia Trip

Yahoo11-06-2025
Ayo Edebiri is taking on a classic children's TV character after a much-needed break.
The Golden Globe winner recently revealed that she developed her pitch for the upcoming Daniel Kaluuya-produced Barney film, from A24 and Mattel Films, during a trip suggested by a friend who noticed she was tired.

'She was like, 'When can you take a break?' And then I did. I went on a trip to Asia for a month,' she recalled to The Wall Street Journal. 'I felt like that girl who takes a gap year. That's where I ended up coming up with the idea for Barney that I ended up pitching to Daniel.'
Edebiri added, 'I was just thinking of, what are the movies that I want to make? What are the things that I want to do? What are the things that make me excited? So I just had this idea, and then we started building it out together. And then it becomes what it's going to be, which I don't want to say too much about.'
The Bear star was tapped to write the film in February, and she's also in talks to star in the adaptation of the PBS kids show Barney & Friends, which ran for 14 seasons from 1992 to 2010. The character of the big purple dinosaur was previously originated in the 1988 direct-to-video series Barney & the Backyard Gang.
Mattel exec Kevin McKeon has said the live-action Barney film will be adult-oriented and 'surrealistic,' in the vein of films by Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze.
'We're leaning into the millennial angst of the property rather than fine-tuning this for kids,' he said. 'It's really a play for adults. Not that it's R-rated, but it'll focus on some of the trials and tribulations of being thirtysomething, growing up with Barney—just the level of disenchantment within the generation.'
Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz has added that the film is 'taking a fresh approach' to the character that will be 'fun, entertaining and culturally oriented,' emphasizing it 'will not be an odd movie.'
Editor's note: A previous version of this story inaccurately stated Edebiri developed the pitch with a friend. We regret the error.

Chuck Mangione, 'Feels So Good' musician and bandleader, dead at 84

Chuck Mangione, the Grammy-winning jazz bandleader and musician who scored an unlikely top-five hit in 1978 with the jazz instrumental "Feels So Good," has died at age 84, according to a note on his official website. Born in Rochester, New York, on Nov. 29, 1940, Mangione early on performed and recorded as the Mangione Brothers with his sibling, keyboardist Gaspare "Gap" Mangione. After graduating from the prestigious Eastman School of Music in his hometown, he played trumpet with famed bandleader Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers as well as with various other ensembles, including recording the album "Friends & Love…A Chuck Mangione Concert" with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in 1970. Mangione's notoriety grew with subsequent recordings of his compositions, including the 1975 RIAA-certified gold album "Chase the Clouds Away," the title track from which was used in coverage of the 1976 Summer Olympics, and the Grammy-winning "Bellavia" in 1977. But it was Mangione's 1977 album "Feels So Good" and its pop radio title track hit that made him a household name. Featuring Mangione playing the flugelhorn and backed by his longtime quartet of guitarist Grant Geissman, bassist Charles Meeks, multi-instrumentalist Chris Vadala and James Bradley Jr. on percussion, the single reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, while the album peaked in the No. 2 position on the all-genre Billboard 200 albums chart – second only to the soundtrack to "Saturday Night Fever," by the Bee Gees. "Feels So Good" ultimately was RIAA-certified double-platinum for sales of more than two million units. Mangione's follow-up albums included the 1978 gold-selling soundtrack to the Anthony Quinn film "Children of Sanchez," the title track from which earned Mangione his second of two career Grammy Awards. 1979's "Fun and Games," which also was certified gold, featured the single "Give It All You Got," which was used in ABC's coverage of the 1980 Winter Olympics and scored two Grammy nominations; Mangione earned 13 lifetime Grammy nods, including his two wins. Mangione recorded some 30 albums during his career, the last of which was the 2000 release "Everything for Love." His general popularity waned following his 1970s heyday but he remained a pop culture touchstone well into the 2000s, sending up his image with a recurring voice role in the animated TV comedy "King of the Hill," playing an exaggerated version of himself as he appeared on the cover of the "Feels So Good" album.

Kelly Clarkson Just Cut Her Hair Into a Short Swishy Bob

NBC/Getty Images Kelly Clarkson has officially joined the bob club. The singer and host of her eponymous talk show showed off her new haircut in a clip shared by The Voice on Instagram July 22. In the clip, she, alongside longtime coaches Adam Levine and John Legend, share that they will be returning for season 29 of the show, which will premiere in spring 2026. Fans welcomed Clarkson back with open arms, with many sharing in the comments how thrilled they are that she's making her return. But despite the big news that she'd be back for another season, we couldn't help but notice her much-shorter haircut in this new clip. Though Clarkson has favored longer locks in recent years, it looks like she decided to take the plunge and embrace the bob. We get a quick glimpse at the hair transformation, but from the looks of it, she's opted for a side swept shoulder-length classic bob with some texture and waves throughout. She traded in her long, elbow-length blonde tresses and bangs for this much shorter, nearly bronde bob. And Clarkson isn't the only talk show host to lean into the bob recently. On her show, Today with Jenna & Friends, Jenna Bush Hager got a bob haircut live on TV, courtesy of celebrity hairstylist Chris McMillan (he also cut Leslie Bibb's now-famous 'c-nty little bob' for her role on The White Lotus). While McMillan cut her hair, Hager exclaimed, 'that's so short!' and honestly, she's not wrong. Bob haircuts are short styles, usually with the hair falling somewhere between the ear and the chin. There are tons of bobs to choose from, depending on how much length or texture you're looking for. For example, French bobs tend to be on the shorter side with a little bit of texture, while a classic bob is usually cut right at the nape of the neck and blunt. If you're more comfortable with a slightly longer bob, the shoulder-length lob is cut between your chin and collarbone. 'Bobs vary in length and can be longer depending on the desired look,' says hairstylist Laurabeth Cabott. 'Deciding whether you want a more chic style or something that you're able to play around with and style differently from day to day can help you determine what length to cut your bob.' 42 Bob Haircut Ideas to Try in 2025 The good news is that a bob will complement anyone. 'A classic bob haircut, where the length falls between the chin and shoulders, can look great on any face shape,' says celebrity hairstylist Jennifer Korab. 'A bob can be customized with different lengths and textures to suit your individual style.' With her duties as a coach for The Voice and a daytime talk show host, Kelly Clarkson is also currently in Las Vegas for a residency until late 2025. We can't wait to get another look at the singer's new bob during her next show. Catharine Malzahn is the contributing associate beauty editor at Glamour. Gwyneth Paltrow Plays F, Marry, Kill With Her Costars

Gwyneth Paltrow just played "Fuck, Marry, Kill" with three of the hottest leading men in Hollywood, and her answers were absolute perfection. On a July 22 episode of The Goop Podcast, the 52-year-old actor sat down for a special "Ask Me Anything" where she shared whether or not she should have sex, marry, or get rid of three famous costars. The three actors in question were Robert Downey Jr., Timothée Chalamet, and Jude Law. Gwyneth starred in Marvel Cinematic Universe's Iron Man and Avengers franchises as Pepper Potts, the employee turned wife of Tony Stark (Robert). Gwyneth played Dickie Greenleaf's (Jude) girlfriend, Marge Sherwood, in 1999's The Talented Mr. Ripley. As for Timothée, Gwyneth is starring with him in the A24 film Marty Surpreme, slated for release on December 25, 2025. "This is impossible... there's no way I can answer this," Gwyneth said, before responding with the most logical answer. "I would marry Robert because we would just laugh so much and have such a fun, weird life and travel," she said. "And, anyway, I'm already, basically, I am married to him in movies, so what's the difference?" At first, she landed on Jude for "fuck" sharing it's "only because it's like robbing the cradle, really, if I do it with Timothée. I think my children would kill me if I did that." That left Gwyneth with only one person to kill, but then the Goop founder flipped the switch on the problematic game with an answer that had me snapping my fingers and saying, "yes, queen." "I'm gonna marry and fuck all three, how's that?" she added. "I'm a modern woman, I'm not killing anymore. Peace out." How about that, indeed? To be honest, this type of game shouldn't exist in the first place because what do you mean you have to "kill" somebody? But I appreciate Gwyneth's answer, because why should you be forced to choose one or the other? Everybody can get it. Funnily enough, this isn't the first time she's been presented with this wacky ultimatum. On a 2023 episode of Call Her Daddy with Alex Cooper, Gwyneth played the game with her real-life exes: Brad Pitt, whom she dated from 1994 to 1997, after meeting on the set of the movie Se7en. They were engaged in 1996 before breaking it off a year later. Ben Affleck, whom she dated from 1999 to 2000. They starred in a couple of films together, like Shakespeare in Love (1998) and Bounce (2000). And her ex-husband Chris Martin, whom she married from 2003 before they consciously uncoupled in 2014, and split in 2016. They share two children, Apple and Moses. Long story short, Gwyneth, who described Brad as "the sort of major chemistry, love of your life, kind of, at the time," chose to F him. As for who to marry, she picked the easy answer and said she would marry Chris and "Do that all again" since "he gave me my two children, who are the loves of my life." Unfortunately, that left Ben with the less desirable option from the game. "Ben, yeah, bless him," she said, noting that he was "technically excellent" in bed, so it wasn't all bad for The Accountant star. Watch to the full episode The Goop Podcast to see Gwyneth talk about less salacious topics like about hormone therapy, menopause, and her favorite foods.
