The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) has proposed Cheengeri Hills -- a lesser-known but equally scenic peak -- as an alternative to address the mounting demand. Situated en-route to Kaduvakuzhi from Sultan Bathery, Cheengeri is known for its gentle slopes and ease of climbing, unlike the forest-clad hills that surround it.
The peak is especially famed for its breathtaking views at dawn. While a trek to Chembra costs over Rs 1,000 per person, a trip to Cheengirimala is priced at just Rs 50, making it a budget-friendly and accessible option for travellers. Local trip planners and tour operators in Wayanad have begun recommending Cheengeri Hills to tourists seeking a less crowded, eco-conscious, and economical trekking experience. Over the past few months, the hills have emerged as one of the most popular trekking destinations in the district.
'Cheengeri Hills have been open to visitors for the past few years. However, after assessing the difficulties faced by tourists at other trekking spots including Chembra peak, we decided to actively promote this location,' said Binosh Kunjappan, secretary of the Wayanad DTPC. 'Unlike other forested peaks, Cheengerimala is safe, scenic, and family-friendly, attracting steady footfall throughout the year. On peak days during the season, an average of 300 people trek the hill – a significant number for a new destination.

Last tunnel of Mumbai Metro's Line 7A, important connectivity link to airport, completed: MMRDA
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) completed the work on the second and last tunnel of Mumbai Metro's Line 7A corridor between Andheri East and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Monday. The tunnel-boring machine Dhruv was deployed for the work and the entire tunnelling on the underground section of the corridor is now complete, officials said. The 1.65-km upline tunnel of a diameter of 5.6 m was built with 1,178 tunnel-lining rings of 1.4 m. Precast ring segments in six pieces were used as liners. The driving of the tunnel started on November 4, 2023, and drove under critical infrastructure items such as Metro Line 3, the Sahar Elevated Road ramp, a principal underground sewer pipeline, and a water pipe. Line 7A, which is 3.17 km long, runs from Andheri East to CSMIA's Terminal 2. It has elevated and underground portions. The line will have two stations–Airport Colony and CSIA Terminal 2–and will be configured to link with the running Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) and, later on, Metro Line 8 (Gold Line), which will be connected to Navi Mumbai International Airport. So far, 61 per cent of the total alignment of Line 7A has been completed, according to officials. The work is being undertaken by J Kumar Infraprojects Limited, which was given the project contract by the MMRDA in September 2019. The Rs 1,998-crore contract involves the construction of a viaduct, ramp, underground tunnels and metro stations. The same company used Dhruv in the Metro Line 3 project from 2018 to 2021. Metro Line 7A is a part of an extension of Metro Line 9, also called Red Line, which has an estimated cost of Rs 6,518 crore. Line 7A is said to enhance connectivity to the airport.

Kerala buses operating in TN not paying tax: Kanniyakumari drivers
KANNIYAKUMARI: Tourist van drivers and associations say their livelihood has been affected as several Kerala- registered buses have been operating in the district illegally without paying entry tax. According to RTO sources, a bus with capacity to seat 50-60 people has to pay tax (other state entry tax ) of Rs 36,000 for a period of seven days to operate in Tamil Nadu. Kanniyakumari district tourist van drivers and owners association president C Manikandan told TNIE that about 70 Kerala registered private buses are currently operating in the district. "Without paying entry tax, these buses are used to transport college students for excursions, or take people to private functions such as marriages etc. This affects the livelihood of around 3,000 van drivers and owners in the district who follow all regulations." Sources said Kerala registered buses have more facilities and seats, hence they are engaged by educational institutions, and private individuals.
