Greek cops clash with Palestine supporters as Israeli ship docks
A number of protesters were arrested during the rally, while police were seen restraining others. The same ship, which was forced away from Syros last Tuesday after a furious pro-Palestine protest, had been carrying around 650 Israeli tourists and arrived in Rhodes without delay.
'We owe an apology to those friends of Greece who chose to spend their holidays here and were forcibly denied that right by some. 'This incident must neither harm our relations with [Israel] nor the love of Israeli tourists for Greece,' he said. While Greek police and port authorities had prepared for further protests on Monday, local businesses were opposed to the demonstration.
Greece has become an increasingly popular destination for Israeli travellers and tourist bodies, as well as the mayor of Rhodes Alexandros Koliadis, welcomed them with traditional sweets from Rhodes. Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar had contacted his Greek counterpart, George Gerapetritis, over the Syros protests after more than 150 furiously demonstrated as the cruise ship attempted to disembark for a six-hour visit.
Protesters carried Palestinian flags, chanted and held banners reading 'Stop the Genocide' and 'No a/c in hell' as they formed a line to prevent the Israeli passengers from arriving in Greece. Some passengers responded by waving Israeli flags and singing patriotic songs. 'Inside the ship, we feel safe, but the children are a little stressed,' one passenger told Israeli broadcaster Kan.
'The ship arrived at Syros, encountered a demonstration by pro-Palestinian supporters, and passengers were stuck on board without permission to disembark,' Mano Maritime later said. They later added: 'The management of Mano Maritime has decided in light of the situation in the city of Syros to now sail to another tourist destination.' A group called We Stay Active organised the protest.
In a social media post they wrote 'residents and visitors to the island state that soldiers, settlers, and supporters of the war and the occupation of Palestine are unwanted on their island.' Following the protest, they added: 'We note that there have been numerous complaints from all over Greece about the provocative behaviour of Israeli tourists, who support genocide and who behave as if our places belong to them.

Palestine Action protest to go ahead with more than 500 people, organisers say
A protest against the ban on Palestine Action as a terror organisation will go ahead after more than 500 people committed to risking arrest by taking part, organisers have said. Defend Our Juries said those taking part will hold 'I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action' signs on Saturday in central London as part of a campaign to end the proscription of Palestine Action. The group added that the protest would go ahead as planned after the 'conditional commitment requirement' was reached. The Metropolitan Police has warned that anyone found to be expressing support for Palestine Action 'can expect to be arrested' following the Government's decision to ban the organisation last month. Defend Our Juries has denied that the planned mass protest will try to overwhelm the police and justice system. A spokesperson said on Tuesday: 'Defend Our Juries has confirmed that 500+ people have committed to holding 'I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action' signs on Saturday in central London, as part of the Lift the Ban campaign, to end the proscription of Palestine Action. 'Since the threshold for the conditional commitment requirement has been reached, the action will go ahead as planned.' More than 200 people were arrested at a wave of protests across the UK in response to the proscription last month as part of the campaign co-ordinated by Defend Our Juries. Many of the protesters were detained after writing and holding up the message 'I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action' on placards or pieces of cardboard. A Met Police spokesperson said: 'We are aware that the organisers of Saturday's planned protest are encouraging hundreds of people turn out with the intention of placing a strain on the police and the wider criminal justice system. 'The Met is very experienced in dealing with large-scale protests, including where the protest activity crosses into criminality requiring arrests. 'While we will not go into the specific details of our plan, the public can be assured that we will have the resources and processes in place to respond to any eventuality. 'Our officers will continue to apply the law in relation to Palestine Action as we have done since its proscription. 'Anyone showing support for the group can expect to be arrested.' A Defend Our Juries spokesperson previously said: 'It is wrong to characterise this (planned demonstration) as a plan to overwhelm the police and court systems. 'If we are allowed to protest peacefully and freely, then that is no bother to anyone.' The move to ban Palestine Action came after two Voyager aircraft were damaged at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire on June 20, an incident it subsequently claimed, which police said caused about £7 million worth of damage. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced plans to proscribe Palestine Action three days later, saying the vandalism of the planes was 'disgraceful' and the group had a 'long history of unacceptable criminal damage'. A High Court ruling on Wednesday decided that Palestine Action's co-founder Huda Ammori had several 'reasonably arguable' beliefs in her challenge over the group's ban that would be heard at a three-day hearing in November, but a bid to pause the ban temporarily was refused. The ban means that membership of, or support for, Palestine Action is now a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison, under the Terrorism Act 2000.

Protest group The 1958 have planned a demonstration before Manchester United 's first game of the season against Arsenal at Old Trafford a week on Sunday, and will target minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe for the first time. The group have been fierce critics of the Glazer family but are setting their sights on Ratcliffe with 'Jim Can't Fix This' banners. Announcing the march, they mocked his plans for a new stadium by branding it the 'Disneyland of the North'. The 1958 also warned that a controversial personal seat licence system, which is being considered if United move to a new stadium and would see fans charged up to £4,000 simply for the right to buy a season ticket, 'would be another step in ripping football away from its working-class roots'. Twenty years of the Glazers and their debt mountain is 20 years too long. Enough is enough. 'We won't allow some natural optimism and a couple of shiny new signings to deflect from the bigger off-field picture. Jim Ratcliffe chose to get into bed with the Glazers and in our opinion is helping keep them in charge. 'So on August 17, we protest not just against the Glazers, but now also against Jim Ratcliffe – a man once seen by many, including ourselves, as a possible saviour, a beacon of hope but now revealed as complicit in the ongoing erosion of everything that makes our club what it is. This is no longer just about ownership; this is about survival – the survival of our identity, our community, and our values. It is not for those who've stood in the same spot at Old Trafford for decades. We feel it is for profit – pure and simple. The burden of this greed is being forced onto generational fans, who are being priced out, pushed out, and ignored. 'Using our club to apparently 'sound opinion' on the reaction to personal seat licenses (PSL) is another alarm bell. This would further price out the youth, local communities, and generations of loyal fans. It would be another step in ripping football away from its working-class roots, showing just how out of touch our club and owners have become. This isn't about the game or the supporters – we feel it's about profit and greed over loyalty and tradition. 'We don't believe a word the club say, as actions speak louder than words and their actions prove their intentions. We will not be silent. We will not be complicit. Jim Ratcliffe, you have chosen your side and it is not ours. You now stand shoulder to shoulder with the Glazers. The mask has slipped. You are no saviour. You're like a (red) devil in disguise. 'So we protest for every fan who has been silenced, evicted, priced out and disregarded. This is bigger than one club. This is about the future of football. To those in our fanbase if the penny hasn't dropped yet. Wake up.'
