The capture and trial of Adolf Eichmann
Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie was deeply involved in setting up one of South America's most important drug cartels, according to a report Friday by German news weekly Der Spiegel.
Dubbed the "Butcher of Lyon" for his wartime torture of prisoners, the former Gestapo chief in the occupied French city fled to South America after the end of World War II.
Barbie was eventually arrested after being tracked down by France's most famous Nazi-hunting couple, Serge Klarsfeld and his wife Beate, the BBC reported. He was extradited from Bolivia to France in 1983 and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1987 on charges of crimes against humanity.
Barbie died in prison in 1991.
According to Der Spiegel, Barbie -- living under the alias Klaus Altmann -- became a security adviser to drug baron Roberto Suarez after the two men met in the 1970s.
Suarez's son Gary told the magazine that Barbie was "an important person to my father."
"He knew something about security, military strategy and secret service work," he said.

Barbie was also active in advising the Bolivian security services, helping set up a death squad for dictator Luis Garcia Meza.
Gary Suarez told Der Spiegel that "Barbie had been deeply involved in the military regimes going back decades."
"Bridegrooms of Death"
Barbie had helped "organize the militias that would overthrow the government" in the run-up to the violent 1980 coup that brought Garcia Meza to power.
Among them was a group of neo-Nazi mercenaries called the "Bridegrooms of Death" who had a swastika-clad headquarters called Club Bavaria in the city of Santa Cruz.
After the coup they were deployed to help both crush political opposition and Suarez's rivals in cocaine production.
A CIA dispatch from May 1974 seen by Der Spiegel reveals that the agency's officers already suspected Barbie of involvement in the drug trade, the magazine said.
Roberto Suarez's son-in-law Gerardo Caballero told Der Spiegel that "Barbie helped us a lot, including in working together with Pablo Escobar," the Colombian drug kingpin.
Barbie was recruited as an anti-communist agent by American Secret Services after the war, and the United States later apologized to France for helping Barbie evade justice.
Der Spiegel has previously reported that Barbie was also active as a secret agent for West German intelligence in Bolivia.
The magazine said he was recruited in late 1965 in the Bolivian capital La Paz and given the code name "Adler" ("Eagle").
Jacques Vergés, a French lawyer who represented Barbie, was asked by "60 Minutes" in 2004 how he could represent one of the world's most vile war criminals.
"You must have hated what he represented," correspondent Morley Safer asked.
"I am not able of hating," Vergés responded.
"Even the worst monster you are not able to hate?" Safer asked.
"No. I am curious to understand," Vergés replied. "I am condemning, but I am not hating."

Alleged mastermind behind shooting of Colombian senator, presidential candidate arrested, authorities say
The alleged mastermind behind the shooting of conservative Colombian senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay was taken into custody Saturday, nearly a month after the attack, law enforcement authorities said. Elder José Arteaga Hernández, who uses the aliases "Chipi" or "Costeño," was arrested in a neighborhood in the northwestern part of the capital, Bogota, National Police Director Maj. Gen. Carlos Fernando Triana told reporters. Authorities had previously accused Arteaga and other suspects of being near the Bogota park where Uribe was shot in broad daylight on June 7. Three other people have been arrested for participating in the logistics and execution of the crime. Charges against Arteaga include attempted aggravated homicide; manufacturing, trafficking and carrying firearms or ammunition; and using minors to commit crimes. Interpol issued a red notice against him on Friday. It was not immediately clear Saturday if Arteaga had an attorney who could comment on his behalf. Authorities said he would make his first court appearance over the weekend. Triana last month said Arteaga "has been involved in a life of crime for more than 20 years, performing hit jobs in all types of crimes in Bogotá." FILE --- Miguel Uribe Turbay attends the strategic dialogue Rethinking Cities for Competitiveness: Smart and Sustainable Cities at the 2019 Concordia Americas Summit in Bogota, Colombia, on May 14, Concordia Summit Uribe was giving a political speech in the park when he was attacked from behind, allegedly by a minor who was captured as he fled. He was shot twice in the head and once in the knee, CBS News reported. He underwent a "neurosurgical" and "peripheral vascular procedure" at the Santa Fe Clinic in Bogota to treat the injuries, and has undergone more surgeries since. He remains in intensive care. Two other people – a man and a woman – were also injured. The motive for the shooting is still being investigated. In October, Uribe announced his intention to run in Colombia's 2026 presidential election. From his Senate seat, he had become one of President Gustavo Petro's most vocal critics. The attack has been widely condemned in a country with a dark past in which drug cartels and insurgent groups murdered and kidnapped politicians. Uribe is the son of a journalist who was kidnapped and killed during one of the country's most violent periods, in 1991. Shortly after the shooting, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S. "condemns in the strongest possible terms the attempted assassination" and called the attack "a direct threat to democracy." He blamed "violent leftist rhetoric coming from the highest levels of the Colombian government" for the shooting. "Having seen firsthand Colombia's progress over the past few decades to consolidate security and democracy, it can't afford to go back to dark days of political violence," Rubio said. "President Petro needs to dial back the inflammatory rhetoric and protect Colombian officials."

Brazil's Gabigol wins appeal in anti-doping case
Gabriel Barbosa, formerly of Flamengo, was cleared of any anti-doping offence by CAS (DOUGLAS MAGNO) Brazil international Gabriel Barbosa on Friday was cleared of tampering during a doping test by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which annulled a two-year ban imposed on the striker. Known as Gabigol, the 28-year-old was suspended by the Brazilian Anti-Doping Tribunal in March 2024 for attempted fraud during a doping test. It was alleged the player was uncooperative during a surprise doping test while playing for Flamengo. Advertisement Gabigol promptly took the matter to Swiss-based CAS who decided to authorise him to play while awaiting the end of the procedure. CAS said in its ruling that while Gabigol's "behaviour was completely uncooperative, it cannot be considered as 'tampering' under the World Anti-Doping Code" and did not constitute a rule violation. It is alleged that on the testing day in April 2023, Gabigol's team-mates underwent testing in the morning while he ignored a request to be present and attended after lunchtime. When he finally arrived to be tested, he reportedly became upset because an officer escorted him to the bathroom. Advertisement Furthermore, he did not respect the sample collection protocol, according to the accusation. A key figure in Flamengo's 2019 domestic league and Copa Libertadores titles, Gabigol has consistently denied having tried to cheat in the test. The former Inter Milan forward joined Cruzeiro at the start of the year. He has won 18 caps for Brazil but last played for his country in 2022. jss/erc/cl/jld/bm/mw/nr
