Before he even stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, PCA made a spectacular diving catch to rob Masyn Winn of a hit. There is nobody quicker in the outfield. After a smooth first inning for Cubs' starter Colin Rea, the Cubs came to bat. Seiya Suzuki stepped up to the plate and smashed a home run with two out. Then PCA, came to the dish and followed with a longshot of his own. Crow-Armstrong provided an early fireworks show for the fans. However, PCA and the Cubs were not done. In the bottom of the second inning, Michael Busch and Carson Kelly both hit home runs as well against starting pitcher Miles Mikolas. The starting pitcher allowed four home runs before he could register four outs. Advertisement The fireworks kept happening in the 3rd inning. Crow-Armstrong homered yet again. In two at-bats in this game, PCA had two home runs in three innings and had a diving catch. What can't he do? Busch followed with another home run as well to make it 7-0 Cubs against the Red Birds in the 3rd inning. Crow-Armstrong now has 23 homers on the year. That puts him into a tie with James Wood for 7th place in the league. Nobody would have thought that would be possible for a guy his size, but he continues to showcase five tools when on the baseball diamond. (AP Photo/Ryan Sun) SEATTLE (AP) — On the spot, Cal Raleigh compiled a laundry list of players he would consider for a Mount Rushmore of Seattle Mariners following their 6-0 victory over Pittsburgh on Friday. Ichiro was one of the first names off the board, followed by the likes of stud starting pitchers Felix Hernandez and Randy Johnson. When identifying who is the face of the Mariners, though, Raleigh immediately landed on Ken Griffey Jr., who he tied for the franchise record for home runs before the All-Star break with 35 with a pair of blasts. Advertisement 'To be mentioned with that name, somebody that's just iconic, a legend, first ballot Hall of Famer, I'm just blessed,' Raleigh said. 'Trying to do the right thing and trying to keep it rolling. If I can try to be like that guy, it's a good guy to look up to.' From Raleigh's perspective, Griffey would have 'smashed' the major league home run record rather than come up 132 short of Barry Bonds if not for injuries. Thankfully for Raleigh's sake, that admiration hasn't been reserved for the public eye. Whenever Griffey finds himself back in Seattle, which was the case when FIFA Club World Cup games were taking place at Lumen Field, Raleigh has enjoyed his chats with 'The Kid.' 'It's always fun to have him around the clubhouse to just talk to him a little bit and figure out how he went about his business,' Raleigh said. 'So, I've talked to him on the phone once or twice as well. So, he's a good one. He's one of the best of all-time. It's hard to beat talking to somebody like that.' Advertisement It's also hard to find many comparable runs to what Raleigh — who will participate in the Home Run Derby — is in the midst of, and what Griffey accomplished ahead of the 1998 All-Star break. Manager Dan Wilson, who was a teammate of Griffey's in 1998, is among the few folks who can truly put Raleigh's fast start to 2025 in perspective. 'It's remarkable. It feels like he hits a home run every game, that's what it feels like,' Wilson said. 'And I can remember feeling it as a player, that (Griffey) just felt like he hit a home run every day. Again, that's the consistency that (Raleigh) has shown. It hasn't been a streak where he has hit a bunch of home runs in a short amount of time. It's been kind of 10 per month.' To Wilson's point, Raleigh has been remarkably consistent. He walloped nine home runs in April, 12 in May and 11 more in June. Griffey's figures were a tad more mercurial, but just barely (10 in April, eight in May, 14 in June). All told, the 28-year-old Raleigh has more than lived up to the early stages of his six-year, $105 million contract extension, which he signed just ahead of the 2025 season. Not only has Raleigh set a career high for home runs, but he's on track to post new marks for batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. Advertisement Raleigh chalked those developments up to his maturing a little over halfway into his fourth full major league season. 'I have the ability to drive the ball out of the ballpark,' Raleigh said. 'I mean, it's part of my game and I'm a strong guy. It's learning how to hone it in and take your hits when maybe you're not getting those pitches in the heart of the plate.' Such an approach is all well and good, but the results have been starkly different. Raleigh has racked up just 36 singles, or one more than his home run total. Suffice to say, Raleigh's offensive output has justified every dollar the Mariners have sent his way so far, and then some. 'Want to make sure I'm doing everything I can every single day to earn that paycheck and earn what they gave me,' Raleigh said. 'But it's a lot more than just that. Cubs break franchise record with 8 home runs, 3 by Michael Busch
CHICAGO (AP) — Michael Busch and the Chicago Cubs turned their holiday into a home run. Eight of them, to be exact. Busch hit three longballs, Pete Crow-Armstrong connected twice and the Cubs went deep a franchise-record eight times to hammer the St. Louis Cardinals 11-3 on Friday for their fourth straight victory. 'It was just a fun game to be a part of,' Busch said. 'Baseball is kind of a July Fourth kind of deal and especially to do it in Wrigley Field and have just so much excitement in the game — that was one I'll never forget.' The fireworks started long before sunset in front of 40,038 fans at Wrigley. Busch went 4 for 4 with five RBIs in his first career three-homer performance and second multihomer game. His second drive of the day hit the right-field video board, just after Crow-Armstrong reached it. 'I think that's the little side effect of baseball,' Busch said. "You get in there just trying to have good at-bats and try to win the game, but when things like that happen, it's cool. 'You grow up dreaming of playing in the big leagues and to be able to do it and then, you know, to stitch your name in the Chicago Cubs record books is pretty cool.' The eight longballs allowed by St. Louis also broke a club mark. The 27-year-old Busch has rounded into a reliable everyday first baseman for the Cubs following a January 2024 trade from the Dodgers that largely went under the radar. He came to Chicago with right-hander Yency Almonte in a deal that sent prospects Jackson Ferris and Zyhir Hope to Los Angeles. Busch played 152 games last season for the Cubs, batting .248 with 21 homers and 65 RBIs. This year, he's upped his average to .288 with 17 homers and 55 RBIs in 82 games. 'He's turned into a really great offensive player,' manager Craig Counsell said. 'Last year it felt like there was kinds of ups and downs during the season. And this year, you know, he has lengthened the ups and shortened the downs.' Crow-Armstrong also went 4 for 4 and Dansby Swanson launched a two-run homer for Chicago. Seiya Suzuki and Carson Kelly added solo shots as the NL Central leaders hit six homers in the first three innings off Miles Mikolas (4-6), a record for most home runs off a Cardinals pitcher in one game. "We just did an extremely good job at being aggressive in the zone and it was just kind of our day," Busch said. 'You know, we don't really miss in the zone and I think when that happens, we're a very scary ballteam." ___
