FTSE 100 jumps to new record high as investors shrug off tariff woes

The UK's top stock index jumped by as much as 100 points, or 1.1%, to a new intraday record of 8,967.21 points, surpassing the previous high of 8,908.82 set in March.
Mining and commodity stock particularly helped drive the sharp rise, as investors shrugged off concerns that US tariff rules could contribute to a global recession.
Anglo American, Glencore and Rio Tinto were among the top risers on the FTSE 100 as a result.
Meanwhile, the FTSE 250 index and AIM 100 index were also higher, rising 0.32% and 0.24% respectively during early trading due to the wave of positive sentiment.
Analysts have partly linked the uplift to dismissing recent US tariff announcements as 'noise' after a number of policy reversals by US President Donald Trump.
Dan Coatsworth, investment analyst at AJ Bell, said: 'Investors lapped up shares in the mining, oil and pharmaceutical sectors, showing a risk-on mood.'
'European markets in general continue to shrug off Donald Trump's daily tariff updates, perhaps seeing them as noise and not facts.
'Trump is throwing out numbers left, right and centre, and investors have begun to dismiss anything that isn't set in stone.'
Susannah Streeter, head of money and markets at Hargreaves Lansdown, said: 'The FTSE 100 is stuffed full of multinationals which are sensitive to the outlook for the world economy and with the so-called 'TACO trade' (Trump Always Chickens Out) in full swing, it's benefiting from more optimism around.
'Investors expect that Trump will 'chicken out' from imposing his threat.
'Miners have roared back to life, topping the index; copper prices have hit record levels, which will benefit major producers in the short-term, while fears about a longer-term tax on imports appear to be receding.'
Elsewhere, the value of the pound ticked 0.17% higher against the US dollar to 1.360, moving closer to the three-year-high it struck earlier this month.

US and Ukraine in talks on drone investment deal

KYIV, July 18 (Reuters) - Ukraine and the United States are in detailed talks on a deal involving U.S. investment in Kyiv's domestic drone production, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said on Friday. The announcement comes a day after President Volodymyr Zelenskiy tasked a reshuffled new government with scaling up Ukraine's arms industry and strengthening ties with its strategic partners. Svyrydenko, speaking to reporters alongside several other new ministers in the capital Kyiv, said the deal would also lead to the U.S., Ukraine's biggest military backer in its war with Russia, purchasing Ukrainian drones. "We plan to sign a 'drone deal' with the United States. We are discussing investments in the expansion of production of Ukrainian drones by the U.S.," she said. "That is, we are talking about the purchase of a large batch of Ukrainian drones." Svyrydenko added that a political decision on the deal had been made by Zelenskiy and President Donald Trump, and that officials were already hashing out the details. Zelenskiy told the New York Post this week that he and Trump were considering a deal for Washington to buy battlefield-tested Ukrainian drones in exchange for Kyiv purchasing weapons from the U.S.. The Ukrainian government under Svyrydenko is expected to shore up ties with the Trump administration, which has grown increasingly critical of Russia since it stepped up air strikes on Ukraine. Svyrydenko is well-known in Washington, having negotiated a high-level deal offering the U.S. preferential access to Ukraine's mineral wealth that will feed a reconstruction fund. At the briefing in Kyiv, economy minister Oleksiy Sobolev said the board of a joint U.S.-Ukrainian fund will meet for the first time by the end of the summer.

Trump launches most ferocious attack on 'numbskull' Fed Chair Jerome Powell yet with NEW threat

President Donald Trump is pounding on Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, this time branding the Fed chair a 'numbskull' for refusing to quickly lower rates. Trump has gone from saying Powell is doing a 'terrible job' to skewering him over a planned $2.5 billion renovation to the Fed's 1930s-era building. The renewed drama comes after the president admitted that it was 'highly unlikely' he would fire him earlier this week. Trump backtracked on his firing threat after reports that he might do so caused another sudden drop in the financial markets. But he again hammered into the embattled Fed chief on Friday over stagnant interest rates. ''Too Late,' and the Fed, are choking out the housing market with their high rate, making it difficult for people, especially the young, to buy a house,' Trump wrote on Truth Social. Trump has demanded that he drop interest rates by at least 3 percent and has been 'too late' in doing just that. But Powell has said Trump's tariffs caused market uncertainty, which has played into the rate issue. Trump called Powell 'truly one of my worst appointments.' He said 'sleepy Joe' Biden 'saw how bad he was and reappointed him anyway,' then added that 'the Fed Board has done nothing to stop this 'numbskull' from hurting so many people.' Trump has lately also focused some of his ire on the Fed's Board of Governors, and wrote Friday that it was 'equally to blame.' 'The USA is Rockin', there is VERY LOW INFLATION, and we deserve to be at 1%, saving One Trillion Dollars a year on Interest Costs. I can't tell you how dumb Too Late is - So bad for our Country!' he concluded. Trump's blast came a day after Powell wrote the White House after receiving a blistering letter from OMB chief Russell Vought over the jaw-dropping price tag for the Fed's renovation costs. He wrote that 'we take seriously the responsibility to be good stewards of public resources,' adding that 'we have taken great care to ensure the project is carefully overseen since it was first approved by the Board in 2017.' He also said there were no VIP dining rooms being built and said there was no VIP elevator in the plans. Powell also defended the 'ground level front lawn' of the building that also serves as the roof of a parking structure – noting it has been referred to as a 'vegetated roof' and 'garden terrace.' He defended green roofs and said it would help with stormwater management. Trump has toggled between insults while threatening to fire Powell, whose role guiding an independent institution got a form of protection from a Supreme Court decision. Powell's term runs out next year anyway, giving Trump the option of biding his time and replacing him later. At the NATO summit at The Hague, Trump called the Princeton-educated Powell an 'average mentally person…Low IQ for what he does,' and 'a very stupid person, actually.'
