The Marlins' sweep of Yankees was historic on the field — and in the stands
In addition to sweeping the New York Yankees by scores of 13-12 on Friday, 2-0 on Saturday and 7-3 on Sunday — marking the first time in franchise history the Marlins have swept the Yankees — the club set a franchise record for largest combined attendance for a series at loanDepot park.
The combined announced attendance for the three games: 101,545.
The Marlins saw 32,299 at the ballpark on Friday, 34,645 on Saturday and 34,601 on Sunday. Prior to this series, the Marlins only eclipsed 30,000 fans at a home game on Opening Day against the Pittsburgh Pirates when they had an announced crowd of 31,590. Beyond that, only one other home game from their first 53 at loanDepot park this season had cracked the 20,000 fans mark: June 21 against the Atlanta Braves, when there was an announced crowd of 21,198.
'The last few home series we've had, it's felt great in here,' Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said. 'The fans showed out. It's been a really fun atmosphere. Our guys have gotten a boost from that. It's been great. They've been extremely supportive. This series was a lot of fun in a number of ways with that.'
And the Marlins gave their fans something to cheer for. With the sweep, Miami improved to 55-55 on the season, getting back to .500 for the first time since April 15 and managing to climb out of a hole that was as deep as 16 games under .500.
Miami is just the fifth team in the wild card era (since the 1995 season) to get back to .500 after being at least 16 games below .500, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. They join the 2014 and 2004 Rays, 2008 Cleveland Indians and 2004 Marlins.
The Marlins enter Monday six games behind the San Diego Padres for the National League's third and final wild card spot with 52 games left on the schedule.
The Marlins' homestand continues with a three-game series against the Houston Astros that starts Monday and concludes Wednesday.

I have been a Boone defender. I think Aaron Boone is good at what this job entails. To be the Yankee skipper, your job is to eat crap, protect your guys, and deflect the media. Keep everybody happy, keep everybody pulling the rope in the same direction. And I generally think Boone does a good job of that. Now, there is a point where the results are sloppy enough for long enough that it does bring up questions about certain aspects of the way the Yankees go about it. Are the Yankees a playoff team? They have fallen behind the Red Sox in the standings. Do the Yankees have a chance to win the division? Do the Yankees have a chance to win the World Series with this current roster, the way they're playing? I think yes, because the American League still has a lot of questions, but, but it's, it's getting to a, a shakier position faster than I thought, I guess is one way to put it. And we'll see how this new roster kind of shakes out for, for better or for worse because there are a lot of new characters here that can end up helping or hurting and we know that they they have Luis Severino back, you know, how this rotation ends up shaking out, and we still don't know what the judge situation is. It sounds like they're expecting to get him back to DH this week, but that is a huge X factor for how this roster functions moving forward that that I can't really speak to. I still look at this roster. I'm like, damn, that's a pretty good team, but they are moving towards the where it's like, why would I believe that you're going to suddenly start playing clean baseball. Now that's the problem, right? That, that's where you kind of lose me from a confidence level. But talent wise and roster-wise, it's still looks like one of the best teams in the AL. Yeah, I think this is a good baseball team. Now they play worse than their talent all the time. If they're like a 9 out of if that's talent wise they're like an 8 out of 10. They play like a 7, or if they are 9, they play like a 7, if they're an 8, they play like a 6. Guess what? That's better than a lot of teams. Close
