Kochi: State human rights commission (SHRC) chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas said Ernakulam collector should investigate the complaint that parking fees are being unfairly collected from vehicles entering collectorate and make a decision within two months.
The order states that complainant should submit the complaint and remedies to the collector. He should form a committee comprising sub-collectors and officials to examine the complaint. Committee should conduct a proper investigation after hearing the complainant and submit an objective report to collector. Commission also asked collector to make an appropriate decision in this regard without delay.
Report submitted to SHRC by collector says that parking fee is being charged to ensure security of Civil Station.
Parking fee is charged for vehicles staying in the compound for more than an hour. From the amount collected as parking fee, Rs 1,500 is being paid to govt every month.
However, the complainant, civil activist Raju Vazhakkala, informed the commission that a fee is charged as soon as the vehicle is parked.
Commission stated in its order that since charging fees is a policy decision, it cannot be said to be illegal.

Will look into import protection for Kashmir apple growers: Piyush Goyal

Union Commerce and Industries minister Piyush Goyal said Sunday that the central government will look into demands of Kashmiri apple growers for greater protection against imports. Goyal was addressing a trade conclave organised by the Federation of Trade and Industry of India (FTII) in Srinagar. The conclave was also attended by J&K Cabinet Minister Satish Sharma, Rajya Sabha MP Ghulam Ali Khatana and chairman of National Trade Welfare Board Sunil Singh. Goyal said he will 'talk to the agriculture ministry' on the demands of the apple growers. He said that the stakeholders of the apple industry have requested for protection of the apple fruit from the imports. 'The industry has requested for more protection on this fruit, which at present attracts a minimum import price (MIP) Rs 50 per Kg and 50 per cent import duty,' Goyal said. He said that after factoring in all the costs, the consumers pay Rs 125 to Rs 150 per kilogram. He said there is a need to balance the interests of the growers and consumers. While the apple produce from Kashmir and Himachal is supplied to different parts of the country, India still imports around six lakh tonnes of apple to meet shortages. On a suggestion from the union territory's handicrafts industry to reduce the GST from 12 percent to 5 percent, Goyal said he would take up the issue. 'I will see how to bring it in the 5 per cent bracket,' he said. 'But we will try to find a solution'. On the Pahalgam terror attack, Goyal said that the people of Kashmir had given 'a befitting reply to the terrorists'.

Conned at first sight! 21 held in wine-&-dine dating scam

Mumbai: A lot can happen on a date. Why, one could even get scammed by the partner. In a dating scam case, 21 people, six of them women, have been arrested. The women would scout for targets on dating apps, call the men to restaurants on a "date", connive with restaurant staff to con the man by generating inflated bills. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The scam came to light when a man on one such date sensed something amiss at a restaurant in Borivli and called up the police. The man had matched with a 22-year-old woman, Disha, on a dating app on April 11. They exchanged phone numbers and agreed to meet at a restaurant in Eksar locality a day later. When the man reached the venue around 6 pm, Disha was already waiting for him. The two ordered liquor, a hookah pot, and energy drinks. Eventually, a bill of Rs 35,000 was presented to the man. He refused to pay the "excessive" amount when a restaurant staffer started to threaten him, said an officer from MHB Colony police station. The man dialled up police helpline '100' and called the cops to the restaurant. The staff reduced the bill to Rs 30,000, and the woman offered to pay half of it. Later that day, the complainant realised that the UPI payment of Rs 15,000 he had made was to a personal ID, not that of the restaurant. The police tracked down the UPI ID and also scrutinised the woman's phone call records. They traced the woman, and after inquiring with her, busted the racket. A team led by deputy commissioner Anant Bhoite and senior inspector Ganesh Pawar arrested 21 people. The police said that the women had been conniving with restaurant staff who generated inflated bills. The man was threatened into paying up, and the woman later got her cut from the restaurant staffer. The woman, Preeti, called him to a restaurant at Malad where he was forced to pay Rs 32,000. The police said they are are now investigating if the same gang is involved in this case too.
