Alex Marquez takes first MotoGP win after brother Marc crashes in Spain

Al Jazeera27-04-2025
Gresini Racing's Alex Marquez has claimed his first MotoGP race victory at the Spanish Grand Prix to snatch the championship lead from his elder brother Marc, who crashed early in the race and finished 12th.
After seven second-place finishes in sprints and races this season, Alex claimed a dream race win on home turf on Sunday in front of more than 100,000 fans with the Spaniard imploring them to increase the volume even when he had a few corners left on the final lap.
Fabio Quartararo finished second to give Yamaha their first podium since the 2023 Indonesian Grand Prix while Ducati's Francesco Bagnaia came in third.
Marc squeezed his way through the crowd to embrace Alex in the winner's circle as the two Spaniards became the first brothers to win in MotoGP.
But the day belonged to the Gresini rider who leads his elder sibling by one point in the standings after taking the chequered flag, which was waved by Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz.
'The best birthday present – amazing. The first one in Jerez is something amazing,' said Alex, who celebrated his 29th birthday on Wednesday.
'I cannot ask for more. It was a race where I was really clever in all the movements.'
An action-packed opening lap had polesitter Quartararo get a perfect start off the line to take the lead into turn one while Saturday's sprint winner, Marc, fell behind to fourth place.
Alex tried to overtake three riders in front of him early on by threading the needle between bikes, but he braked too late and fell behind while Marc and Bagnaia collided while jostling for position.
With Marc running in third and looking to overtake his teammate, the Spaniard then crashed at turn seven and rejoined in 22nd place with a damaged bike as thousands of fans around the circuit collectively groaned.
Bagnaia did not have time to relax, however, as Alex came up behind him and elbowed the Italian out of the way to move up to second and put Quartararo in his sights.
The Yamaha rider tried his best to keep Alex at bay, but on lap 11, the pace of the Ducati bike proved far too superior as he overtook Quartararo to draw a roar from the Marquez grandstand.
Once Alex was in the clear, he began to disappear into the distance as Bagnaia could not catch up and struggled to overtake Quartararo, who doggedly held onto second place.
'Incredible. To be on the podium is super special – especially with the gap to Alex and to keep Pecco [Bagnaia] behind in the race was so difficult,' said Quartararo, the 2021 MotoGP champion.
'It's been long years but super happy to be back on the podium in Jerez.'

The international federation of motorcycling (FIM) announced on Wednesday the calendar for the 2026 FIM MotoGP World Championship, which will feature 22 rounds across five continents in its 78th edition, reaffirming its position as one of the world's most prestigious sporting events. The FIM has decided that the fourth round of the championship will be held at the Lusail International Circuit in Doha from April 10-12. This is part of the ongoing strategic cooperation between the FIM and the Qatari circuit, which is hosting the MotoGP Qatar Airways Grand Prix for the 22nd consecutive year since joining the world championship in 2004. The new season will kick off at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram, Thailand, and conclude at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia, Spain. The Lusail International Circuit is one of the world's most prominent venues for MotoGP racing, thanks to its staging the only full night race of the season under its tracks' legendary lights, which is considered one of the most exciting and popular events. Arsenal sign defender Mosquera from Valencia

PA Media/dpa London Arsenal have made Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera their fifth signing of the summer, taking the club's spending to close to £140 million ($189 million). Spaniard Mosquera joins for an initial fee of £13m - with performance-related add-ons - and is understood to have agreed a five-year deal with an option of a further year. The 21-year-old is set to provide cover for William Saliba and Gabriel at the heart of the Gunners' defence, but can also operate anywhere along the backline. Mosquera, who played 41 times for Valencia last season, has joined Arsenal for their tour of Singapore and Hong Kong. 'It means a lot to me,' Mosquera told the club website. 'There's been a lot of hard work behind all of this. 'It's an opportunity that came up and I couldn't let it pass me by. I'm joining a historic, massive club. When you arrive here with your family, you really feel the greatness of this place.' New sporting director Andrea Berta has wasted no time in improving Arsenal's squad as manager Mikel Arteta eyes the club's first Premier League title in more than two decades. 'Cristhian has already performed consistently well with significant experience in La Liga. He is an intelligent player with good pace, who can play centrally and on both sides,' Arteta said. 'He is a young player with exciting talent and enormous potential, who will fit well into our squad as we continue to prepare for next season. Cristhian adds good quality to our squad, and we look forward to working with him and making him feel at home with us.' Mosquera follows Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi (£60m), goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5m), Christian Norgaard (£10m) and Noni Madueke (£48.5m) in moving to the Emirates. Gabriel and Myles Lewis-Skelly have also put pen to paper on new contracts in the off-season, with a long-term extension for teenager Ethan Nwaneri believed to be all-but completed. Arsenal remain hopeful of signing striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon, although it is not believed a deal, which could be worth as much as £65m, is imminent.

Marquez fends off Bezzecchi for Czech MotoGP victory

Agencies Brno (Czech Republic) The 'unstoppable' Marc Marquez emerged victorious yet again on Sunday at the Czech MotoGP to become the first Ducati rider to win five Grands Prix on the spin, but he was made to work for it in the first half of the battle. It was the Spaniard's eighth victory in 12 races this season and fifth in a row, extending his commanding lead in the world championship. The factory Ducati rider beat Marco Bezzecchi on an Aprilia by almost two seconds, while Pedro Acosta on a KTM came in third in his first race podium finish of the season. Marquez had a fifth straight perfect weekend, winning both the sprint on Saturday and Sunday's race. The 32-year-old Spaniard now leads the world championship with 381 points, 120 ahead of his younger brother Alex who crashed, and 168 ahead of Ducati teammate Francesco Bagnaia. 'It has been a super first part of the season and especially these last races,' Marquez said. 'I feel better and better and I'm riding super good,' he added. Bagnaia started from pole in bright sunshine but only retained the lead until the second lap when Bezzecchi eased past him, with Marquez following suit soon afterwards. Acosta did the same to settle down in third after getting a boost from a second-place finish in Saturday's sprint. Marquez glided past Bezzecchi in lap eight as the runaway trio kept building up their lead, and as so often this season kept widening the gap comfortably. The three stayed put until the finish line, although fourth-placed Bagnaia gave Acosta a hard time pressing from behind. 'The first lap was unbelievable,' said Bezzecchi. 'I had so much fun in the first half of the race but unfortunately when Marc passed me I immediately saw that he had something more.' 'I tried to attack but he was strong. Anyway, I made a fantastic performance, I'm very, very happy,' added the Italian. Marquez took 40min 04.628sec to complete the 21 laps on the resurfaced 5.4-kilometre Brno circuit returning to the MotoGP calendar after a five-year break due to financial woes. Bezzecchi crossed the line 1.753 seconds adrift, while Acosta trailed Marquez by 3.366sec. Almost 220,000 fans gathered in the stands for the weekend as Marquez sped to his fourth MotoGP win at Brno after 2013, 2017 and 2019. The MotoGP circus will now take a summer break and resume with the Austrian GP on August 15-17.
