Poisoning victim's dad vows to stop reopening of Laos hostel
Shaun Bowles told 2GB's Ben Fordham on Tuesday morning it was 'unfathomable' to hear news of the hostel's plan to reopen under a new name.
'The potential of this happening to someone else is very real because obviously they haven't changed their ways,' Mr Bowles said.
'We're gonna put our heads together with some people and we're gonna do everything we can to make sure that place doesn't reopen because it's just not right,' he said.
'To have no justice and to find out that they're going to reopen the backpackers … it's just the worst news.'
Nana Backpacker hostel became the centre of international attention in November 2024 after six backpackers, including two 19-year-old Australian women, died after a suspected methanol poisoning.
Mr Bowles' daughter Holly and her friend Bianca Jones had been drinking at the venue, which plans to reopen later this year under the name 'Vang Vieng Central Backpackers Hostel'.
One English backpacker who recovered from the suspected poisoning told the BBC it was 'unbelievable' to hear of the hostel's reopening.
Bethany Clarke and her friend Simone White fell ill one day after drinking free vodka shots at Nana Backpackers, and while Bethany was able to recover, Simone would succumb to her illness several days later.
'I'm shocked. If it's the same management or ownership involved, I wouldn't trust them,' Ms Clarke said.
'It's just unbelievable because we know that was where we were poisoned.'
Mr Bowles believes the Laotian government is not taking the deaths seriously.
'They tell us that it's sitting with the prosecutors but … we can't even get a meeting with the Laos ambassador to Australia in Canberra to ask some questions and to find out some answers,' he told Fordham.
'We remember (Holly) so fondly … someone needs to be held accountable,' he said.
The hostel now appears on TripAdvisor under the newly proposed name, however bookings cannot be made through the site.

Gap to close in SA's prison placement rules after plea from murder victim's family
A gap in South Australia's prison placement guidelines is set to close after murder victim Michael Purse's family pushed for change after learning one of his killers had been moved to a low-security facility. Michael's father Jeffrey Purse previously told the media of his devastation at learning that Edwin James Hinrichsen, who was convicted of his son's manslaughter in 2023, had been moved from Yatala Labour Prison to Cadell Training Centre in the state's Riverland. Hinrichsen was sentenced beside David Graham Young — both of whom pleaded guilty to manslaughter and were subsequently ordered to serve more than 11 years behind bars. A third man, Mark-Bry Andrew Leedham, was found guilty of murdering the 32-year-old and sentenced earlier this year to life imprisonment with a non-parole period of 28 years — including four years remaining on an earlier jail term. Michael was killed in February 2019 at a unit in Kilburn, in Adelaide's northern suburbs, after he went missing from the Adelaide CBD. His remains have never been found. Mr Purse told the ABC on Wednesday he and his family were "quite stunned" when they learned that Hinrichsen was serving the remainder of his sentence at a low-security prison farm. Upon hearing the news, which was around the same time Leedham was sentenced, Mr Purse spoke to the media, contacted authorities and wrote a letter to the Minister for Correctional Services Emily Bourke. Hinrichsen was subsequently moved to a medium-security facility and a review into his placement is now underway. "The results of that enquiry found that there are gaps in their guidelines and SOPs [Standard Operating Procedures], and therefore, there was no specific exclusions of persons like Hinrichsen to be not admitted into low-security facilities," Mr Purse said on Wednesday. Minister Bourke said she was "grateful to Jeffrey for sharing his story… and advocating for improvements in our justice system". "We listened to his feedback and brought Jeffrey and the department together, enabling an outcome where all recommendations put forward by the review process will be implemented," she said. "Importantly, this includes giving a stronger victim perspective in the case management of serious offenders. "Community safety is paramount and outcomes of this review will strengthen processes in place, with greater oversight on placement decisions made." Mr Purse said he and his family were "very pleased with the result" and compared it to "a bit of a David versus Goliath battle". A spokesperson from the Department for Correctional Services said it took "concerns of victims very seriously" and review panel "put forward recommendations which will be implemented". "These changes will help ensure the department has a stronger victim focus relating to the case management of serious offenders," it said. "Offenders in this category will have a higher degree of oversight prior to any transfer decision made."

US Justice Department plans to interview Epstein accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell
The US Department of Justice is seeking to interview Ghislaine Maxwell, the imprisoned accomplice of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, officials said Tuesday, as President Donald Trump struggles to quell a furor over the handling of the explosive case. The former British socialite is currently serving a 20-year sentence after being convicted in 2021 of sex trafficking minors on behalf of Epstein, who died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial in his own pedophile trafficking case. "President Trump has told us to release all credible evidence" about the Epstein case, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement on X. The surprise announcement marked the Trump administration's latest effort to defuse spiraling anger among the Republican's own supporters over what they have long seen as a cover-up of Epstein's crimes and high-level connections. Blanche said an FBI review of the evidence against Epstein -- a wealthy financier whose powerful friends once included Trump -- had found nothing to suggest new leads. But if Maxwell "has information about anyone who has committed crimes against victims, the FBI and the DOJ will hear what she has to say," said Blanche, who was formerly Trump's personal lawyer. Among those with connections to Epstein was Britain's Prince Andrew, who settled a US civil case in February 2022 brought by Virginia Giuffre, who claimed he sexually assaulted her when she was 17. Giuffre, who accused Epstein of using her as a sex slave, committed suicide at her home in Australia in April. Billionaire Elon Musk accused President Donald Trump on X last month of being in the "Epstein files" after the pair had a falling out, but he later deleted his posts.
