
BlueSG is shutting down - what happens next?, Lifestyle News
Technically, the company is 'taking a pause' to do a major upgrade of its platform and fleet, and it promises to be back in 2026 fully refreshed.
In the meantime, the car-sharing service will cease operations at 11.59pm on Aug 8, with the company laying off staff accordingly to 'reflect the reduced operational scale during the pause period', said a BlueSG spokesperson.
Keith Kee, chief executive officer of BlueSG, told The Business Times, "We are not ending the service per se. We call it a pause, because it is in preparation for the upgrade."
He added, "We want to have a refreshed user experience. The new platform will feature a refreshed fleet and upgraded systems, designed to deliver a stronger performance and more seamless user experience."
BlueSG had previously done another upgrade, or 'technical migration', to its platform between 2023 to early 2024 to improve the user experience. While that upgrade took place without any disruption to its services, users experienced some issues with billing and booking cars during that period.
The BlueSG spokesperson told The Straits Times, "Through that migration, it became clear that the current infrastructure needed a decisive, future-ready upgrade - one that could better support the changing mobility landscape. Emerging technological advancements also reinforced the urgency to act decisively."
The need for a stoppage to operations could also be down to BlueSG's fleet of electric cars, which would require extensive refreshing.
The French-made Bollore Bluecar, which was BlueSG's launch model, has been in use since the company started operations in 2017, and is now regarded as being extremely outdated.
The other BlueSG model, the Opel e-Corsa, which was introduced to the fleet in 2022, will also be soon rendered obsolete, as Opel will no longer have any official representation in Singapore. The brand's dealer, Auto Germany, has announced plans to stop Opel sales here by the end of 2025.
That would make servicing and maintaining the Opel e-Corsa BlueSG cars a difficult proposition.
The current fleet are unlikely to be reused when BlueSG restarts operations, and they will be decommissioned or repurposed, said Kee, without elaborating further. I'm a BlueSG user. What's going to happen to my account?
Obviously, you won't be able to make or complete any bookings after Aug 8. Any pre-bookings after that date will be cancelled.
Users on BlueSG's paid subscription pricing plans, which range from $8 to $18, will have their plans adjusted, and any subscription fees billed up to Aug 8 will be refunded accordingly. They will also not be charged any subscription fee from Aug 8 onwards.
All user accounts will remain accessible until 11.59pm on Aug 31, following which they will be closed. The company stated in a press release that it will process all account closures, outstanding billing issues, subscription adjustments and refunds by Aug 31.
Users will be required to update their contact details within the BlueSG app by Aug 16 to a PayNow-linked number, and all refunds will be made through that method. Refunds will be processed in batches starting from Aug 16.
BlueSG's customer service team will provide support until Aug 31 through phone, live chat and emails. Following that date, support will continue to be provided via email only from Sep 1 to Oct 1.
Users can also approach the Consumers Association of Singapore (Case), who have set up a dedicated channel address matters related to the refund of credits and outstanding bills.

SINGAPORE - Undergraduate Mia, 26, has been chatting with potential dates on Telegram, but she has never seen their faces. It is only when they meet for their first date that she knows what they look like. She is among thousands who have been using amble, a Singapore-made bot that operates much like a virtual matchmaker. Introduced as a bot on Telegram - as @ambleprojectbot - in April 2023, amble is now also available as an app. On amble, users start out completely anonymous to each other, and do not have any idea what the other person looks like. This is in stark contrast to popular dating apps like Tinder, Hinge and Bumble, where details like a person's appearance, height and occupation are often made visible. For Mia, this has been a great pull. She told The Straits Times that her previous experience using Bumble made her feel as though she was "a tomato on display" at a Sunday market. With looks out of the equation on amble, Mia said she has been able to better determine her compatibility with her matches. "(A person's appearance) just isn't that high on my list in comparison with values or personality," she said. As the conversation between two users progresses, "milestones" are unlocked and more is revealed about the parties. This can include fun facts about them or a picture of them - the latter only if both users have chosen to share a photo. Mia said she and her matches chose not to reveal what they look like, and instead went on "fun, blind meet-ups". She has gone on two such meet-ups and said they were both enjoyable. PHOTO: AMBLE 'Not rushed, not transactional' amble co-founder Alyssa Chua, 27, told ST she began experimenting with the idea of the bot in 2023 as she felt that conversations, particularly those on dating apps, were beginning to feel more fleeting than before. "We swipe, we judge, we expect instant chemistry. If sparks don't fly in the first few seconds, we move on," she said. "And yet, when we do find something real... it's because of a conversation that made us pause, think and see someone beyond the surface." Ms Chua said she chose to name the bot "amble" to reflect how she felt a conversation should feel. "Not rushed, not transactional, but like taking a walk in the park with someone, one step at a time," she said. That sentiment has resonated with enough users for Ms Chua and fellow co-founder Cayden Gwee, 27, to decide to release an app version of the bot in April. Ms Chua said there are now about 6,000 people using amble, both on Telegram and the app. To help users find common ground, amble intermittently poses questions or prompts. These can range from simple ones like whether they have unusual hobbies or talents to ones that provoke deeper thought such as: "Do you think there's any sort of scenario which makes it fair to reveal a secret?" Mr Mac Healy, 27, who began using amble in 2024, told ST the "brainwork" needed to answer most questions has helped him strike up "pretty good" conversations and led to meaningful matches and dates. This is in comparison to popular dating apps, where conversations are "the same... rinse-and-repeat", said the financial analyst. "It's not like 'What's your favourite colour?' - I get sick hearing that every single time I enter a new talking phase... amble adds a good twist," he added. Users can also filter the people they will be matched with based on their intention - whether they are looking for something romantic or platonic. "Some have met romantic partners - we've received very cute photos - while others have discovered shared passions with like-minded hobbyists," she said. But with the online dating scene increasingly filled with scammy profiles and bots generated by artificial intelligence (AI), how sure can users be that the person they are chatting with is real? Ms Chua said that on Telegram, bots - like amble - are not allowed to engage with other bots, as part of the messaging app's security measure to prevent potential abuse. On the amble app, every profile is verified through the user's e-mail and phone number. The phone numbers are then cross-checked against databases of fraudulent numbers to prevent abuse, added Ms Chua. AI is also used on the app to assess users' answers to questions set out by amble during onboarding. "Behind the scenes, we use AI to evaluate these responses by looking for indicators of intent, sincerity and alignment with the kind of meaningful conversations amble is built for," said Ms Chua. "This helps us ensure that the people on the platform are real and genuinely here to connect." App not the end for Telegram bot Ms Chua said Telegram was chosen as the platform to first roll out amble as it gave the bot's creators the flexibility to test ideas, and without requiring users to download something that was new. Mr Ryan, who wanted to be known by only one name, said he found it convenient that he did not have to download yet another app onto his phone. "(It) definitely pulled me to using amble," said the 29-year-old commercial pilot, who has been using the bot since early 2025. Ms Chua said Telegram also "felt like a natural place for real conversations to happen". However, the messaging platform also limited what Ms Chua and Mr Gwee could do with amble. For example, the bot is only able to let users speak to one match at a time. "With an app, we are able to introduce concurrent matches, letting people explore multiple connections at once," said Ms Chua. While users can only experience a simple chat interface on Telegram, an app allows for custom interfaces that could stimulate more thoughtful conversations, and even introduce game-like elements to inspire more playful interactions. The app, though, does not spell the end of the amble Telegram bot. Noting that some users preferred the bot's simplicity on Telegram, Ms Chua said she is exploring ways to keep it as an option alongside the app. "But moving forward, the app will be our focus - because it allows us to build amble the way we've always envisioned it, without compromises," said Ms Chua.

Russia says it has 'no restrictions' now on intermediate-range missile deployment
MOSCOW - Russia said on Tuesday that it would no longer place any limits on where it deploys intermediate-range missiles that can carry nuclear warheads. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was speaking a day after Russia said it was lifting what it called a unilateral moratorium on deploying intermediate-range missiles, saying this was a forced response to moves by the U.S. and its allies. "Russia no longer has any restrictions on this matter, Russia no longer considers itself limited by anything," Peskov told a daily briefing. "Russia considers itself entitled, if necessary, to take appropriate measures, to take appropriate steps." Western security analysts said the "moratorium", in fact, was long dead, if it had ever existed, but the Russian announcement was intended as an aggressive signal to the West at a time of high tension over the war in Ukraine. "It sends a message to Europe: don't forget that we've got these missiles," Nikolai Sokov, a former Soviet and Russian arms control negotiator, said in a telephone interview. President Vladimir Putin said last week that the Oreshnik had gone into serial production and been delivered to the armed forces. He has said it will also be deployed in Belarus, a Russian ally which borders three NATO countries. Military analysts say it could be fired with either conventional or nuclear warheads. HISTORIC TREATY As the Cold War neared its end, the United States and the Soviet Union agreed a landmark treaty in 1987 to scrap all ground-based shorter-range and intermediate-range (INF) nuclear and conventional weapons, defined as those with ranges between 500 km and 5,500 km. But the pact, seen at the time as a sign of easing tensions between the rival superpowers, unravelled over time as relations deteriorated. The United States withdrew from the treaty in 2019 during Donald Trump's first presidency, citing alleged violations that Russia denied. Against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, the United States said last year it would start deployment in Germany from 2026 of weapons including SM-6s and Tomahawks, previously placed mainly on ships, and new hypersonic missiles. These are conventional systems but some could also, in theory, be fitted with nuclear tips, and security experts say Russian planning would have to allow for that possibility. Gerhard Mangott, a Russia expert at the University of Innsbruck in Austria, said the planned deployments of INF missiles in Europe by both NATO countries and Russia signalled a looming arms race. If one side fired such a missile, the other would have only minutes to respond. "In central Europe, the warning time will be reduced to about four to five minutes, so this makes an unintended nuclear escalation much more likely," he said in a phone interview. Since the start of the Ukraine war, Russia has delivered numerous warnings to the West not to intervene directly and risk a nuclear war. This week, however, Russia played down the significance of an announcement by Trump that he had ordered a re-positioning of U.S. nuclear submarines in response to what he called threatening statements from former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev. "We do not believe that we are talking about any escalation now. BlueSG needs time to develop software, refresh fleet, say ex-insiders after winding-down news

SINGAPORE – The need for a robust software to power the service and for better vehicles has been cited by former BlueSG insiders as two possible reasons behind the electric car-sharing service winding down operations on Aug 8 and relaunching in 2026. BlueSG said it was doing so to upgrade its platform, which includes enhanced technology and a refreshed fleet, to make the service more reliable and efficient. The software manages the vehicle fleet, works with the user database and handles payments. BlueSG switched to its current software in late 2023 from another one that was used before the car-sharing service was sold in 2021 to Goldbell, a Singapore-owned company known for commercial and industrial vehicle leasing. This was because the rights to use the previous software expired, Mr Ng Lee Kwang, a BlueSG board director between 2021 and 2023, told The Straits Times. The new software drew user complaints on issues such as car bookings and payments. Mr Franck Vitte, who founded BlueSG in 2017 and served as its managing director until October 2021, when it was sold, told ST on Aug 5 that the software needed by the car-sharing service is complex to develop and difficult to run reliably. He also suspects that the developers may have realised that a thorough rework of the foundations, rather than patching fixes to the software, is needed to ensure that the system will operate smoothly. Even though there are ready-made, off-the-shelf software solutions, adapting them to the specific requirement of BlueSG will take a lot of work, Mr Vitte said. This includes handling Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) charges, parking fee payments and having access to the call centre from the smartphone app. The two-door electric cars that launched the BlueSG car-sharing service in 2017 are no longer in production and some of the replacement parts are difficult to source. Mr Ng said there is a need for newer electric cars that can be charged up faster and have longer operating range, so that the cars can be used more frequently to generate more revenue and boost profitability. This comes as BlueSG posted a net loss of $31.1 million between January 2023 and March 2024, based on its latest publicly available financial statements. This is more than two times the $11.4 million net loss the company incurred in the financial year ended December 2022, according to statements filed with the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority. The company attributed the losses to the heavy investments made over the years, which were part of its strategy to achieve its growth plans. It is a marked change of fortune for the firm, which had posted a $1.8 million profit in the financial year ended December 2021. BlueSG is Singapore's first electric-only car-sharing service. Its launch in 2017 was supported by the Land Transport Authority and the Economic Development Board. The car-sharing service has two types of electric vehicles in its fleet: a compact two-door hatchback, a specially built model for BlueSG that entered service in 2017, and the Opel Corsa-e, a larger, four-door hatchback, which was introduced in 2022. BlueSG's revenue leapt to $21.1 million in 2021, from $14.3 million in 2020. Revenue continued to rise steadily to $23 million for the 12 months ended December 2022, and to $24.6 million in the January 2023 to March 2024 period. No financial statement was filed for the 2023 financial year. Responding to ST's queries, BlueSG chief executive Keith Kee said the figures must be viewed in the context of the company's 'deliberate, front-loaded investment strategy'. He added that the company has invested about $70 million over the past years in building up BlueSG. 'We committed to scaling the business in a way that it would support long-term growth, and made a conscious decision to invest ahead of the curve, fully aware that it required upfront capital commitment,' said Mr Kee. In its 2021 announcement about its plans for BlueSG, Goldbell said it planned to invest more than $70 million over five years to grow the car-sharing service's fleet and back-end technologies to boost operational efficiencies and customer experience. Goldbell also aspired to take BlueSG to other cities in the Asia-Pacific. The car-sharing company said its relaunch in 2026 will see an upgraded platform, a refreshed car fleet and more locations for users to rent and return cars. The company is also laying off an undisclosed number of staff. The latest available financial statement, which is for the January 2023 to March 2024 period, showed that BlueSG's costs came to $40.3 million – 46 per cent more than the $27.6 million incurred in the January to December 2022 period. This was due to factors such as the cost of insurance, maintenance and storage of its electric vehicle fleet, which came up to a combined $9.3 million, 42.9 per cent more than 2022's figure of $6.5 million. BlueSG said it has a fleet of 'almost 1,000 electric vehicles' and more than 1,500 charging points. Since it was acquired by Goldbell, its subscriber base has grown from 140,000 to more than 250,000, but it declined to say how many users are active. BlueSG is unique among car-sharing services in Singapore because the hired car does not have to be returned to the same location from where the vehicle was rented out. Using the service involves signing up as a member and booking a car over a smartphone app. The app also unlocks and starts the car. The service is charged on a per-minute basis, instead of larger 30-minute or hourly blocks, which are more common.
