Shubman Gill Equals Gary Sobers Test Record, Needs 1 Run To...
Shubman Gill has proven his credentials in Test cricket with a memorable show on India's ongoing tour of England.
India captain Shubman Gill is in the midst of a breakthrough series of his Test career that has seen him score truckload of runs. In his debut series as India Test captain, Gill has stepped up his game with four centuries from eight innings including a magnificent double ton against England.
With a Test still remaining in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Gill can create several records.
The 25-year-old on Sunday, scored a memorable hundred which was pivotal to India securing a hard-fought draw in Manchester after playing catchup for the majority of the match. He scored 103 off 238 and stitched a 188-run partnership with KL Rahul (90) to help the visitors recover from 0/2 after England had taken a huge 311-run lead.
Gill thus drew level with the legendary Gary Sobers' 59-year-old record for the most runs scored by a visiting captain during a series in SENA countries. Sobers scored 722 from eight innings of five Tests during West Indies' 1966 tour of England. The legendary allrounder scored three centuries and two fifties on the tour.
Gill has so far made 722 runs from eight innings of four Tests and needs 1 run to go past Sobers record.
Most runs by a visiting captain in a series in SENA countries
Overall, the record for the most runs in a single series by a captain is held by legendary Don Bradman of Australia who racked up 810 runs in 9 innings of a five-Test series against England at home in 1936-37. Gill is joint-third in this list.
Gill's Sensational Show
Prior to the start of England tour, there questions were raised over Gill's middling record in Test cricket. All five of his Test centuries before leaving for England came at home.
The youngster has addressed the criticism with aplomb peeling four centuries with his overall Test average now in the early fourties.

'Injection liya hai tu?': Shubman Gill under pressure as Akash Deep struggles with another injury, video goes viral
Akash Deep hit on the shin. (PIC - X) New Delhi: Team India's Test skipper Shubman Gill was heard asking Indian bowler Akash Deep if he had taken an injection to get relief from his pain as the star bowler suffered another injury during England's chase in the fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy played at the Oval. What happened to Akash Deep? In the second-to-last over before lunch on Day 4 of the fifth Test in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Brook hit a straight drive that went straight back to Akash Deep, hitting him on the shin. What did Shubman Gill ask? The stump mic picked up Gill shouting, 'Injection liya kya tum?' – asking if Akash had taken a painkiller shot and was ready to bowl. He repeated the question, signalling urgency. WATCH VIDEO BELOW: — The Game Changer (@TheGame_26) August 3, 2025 What happened in the match? Talking about the match, when the final innings resumed on 50 for one wicket under overcast conditions in London, England's star batter Ben Duckett smashed a stunning fifty before getting dismissed by Prasidh Krishna. Then his other bowling partner Mohammed Siraj struck shortly after to dismiss captain Ollie Pope, but England star batter Joe Root and Harry Brook carried Englaldn to 164-3 at lunch. After the lunch break, Shubman Gill was continuing with his pacer bowlers, both Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj were bowling together. Later, the Indian captain brought up Washington Sundar for a short spin spell, looking for a wicket or an impact, but it was not that impactful. During the second session, both of them reached their respective fifties while England was at 250 runs, so they had 125 runs left to achieve the humongous victory target of 374, which would give them a 3-1 series win. England are now chasing history at The Oval. Fewer runs have been scored to win in a fourth innings of a Test at the ground than England's 263 in a one-wicket victory over Australia in 1902.

India & England Create History, Level 96-Year-Old Record With 14 300-Plus Totals
Last Updated: India and England posted their 14th 300-plus total in Tests at the Oval, with England needing 57 runs for a series-sealing victory over the visitors. With the run-flow continuing at the Oval in London during the fifth Test of the series between India and England, the two teams posted their 14th 300-plus total, the highest in Tests, levelling a record from the 1928-29 Ashes and going past the 1975-76 series between Australia and the Windies. England went past 300 in their second innings with a boundary from Harry Brook off Akash Deep in the 63rd over, as they looked all set to chase down the target. An epic 195-run partnership off 211 deliveries between Brook and ace batter Joe Root took the wind out of India's sails as England coasted to 317/4 at tea, needing another 57 runs for the series-sealing win against India. India and England scored 300+ runs in all four innings of the first Test at Leeds, in three innings of the second Test in Birmingham and Manchester and in two innings of the third Test at Lord's and the Oval. In the 1928/29 Ashes, England won 4-1 Down Under, one of their best shows ever in the history of the tournament. Wally Hammond scored a whopping 905 runs in the series, at a stunning average of 113.12. Surprisingly, left-arm spinner Jack White finished as the highest wicket-taker in the series. It was the second century of the series for Brook (111 off 98), who displayed special ball striking abilities under extreme pressure. Brook made most of a life given on 19 when Mohammed Siraj stumbled to the boundary ropes after taking his catch off Prasidh Krishna. The three Indian pacers couldn't take much out of the track with a softer ball and the two spinners, Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja, too, proved ineffective, although to be fair to them, they were not given long spells. The new ball is still 14 overs away and the match would be as good as over by then if England continue marching towards their goal. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
