Erling Haaland shows class with Diogo Jota tribute after Liverpool star's tragic death

Yahoo2 days ago
Erling Haaland is one of the latest soccer stars to pay a heartfelt tribute to Liverpool forward Diogo Jota following his death in Spain.
Jota lost his life in a car accident alongside his brother Andre in the early hours of Thursday morning. Local media first broke the news of Jota's passing before an official statement from Liverpool confirmed the death of the club's No. 20 and his younger sibling.

A number of players from the Premier League and beyond have taken to social media, with Manchester City man Haaland posting a photo of Jota and an emotional caption on his Instagram story.

Along with a black and white image of the Portuguese international, Haaland wrote to his 38 million followers: "RIP Diogo, way too soon."
Jota and Haaland had found themselves on opposite sides of one of the biggest Premier League rivalries of recent years, with Liverpool and City often battling it out at the top of the Premier League.

Last season, it was the Reds who came out on top, taking back the Premier League crown after the Manchester club had one the previous four. Jota played his part in securing a record 20th English league title, playing 26 times and scoring six goals throughout the campaign.
He last featured out on the field just last month, helping his native Portugal win the UEFA Nations League final against Spain in Germany. Jota did so alongside arguably his country's greatest ever player in Cristiano Ronaldo, who like Haaland paid tribute to the striker online.
Ronaldo wrote: "It doesn't make sense. Just now we were together in the National Team, just now you got married. To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in Peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you."

The Portugal captain's emotional tribute came after Liverpool confirmed the news of Jota's passing to their fans online. "Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota," a club statement read on Thursday.
"The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.
"Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre's family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss."
Diogo Jota lifted the Premier League title at the end of the season
Haaland's City was one of the first Premier League clubs to pay their own tribute to the Liverpool No. 20, as the former Premier League champions wrote: "Everyone at Manchester City is shocked and saddened to learn about the devastating news regarding the passing of Diogo Jota.
"We send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends and everyone at Liverpool Football Club at this difficult time. Rest in peace, Diogo." Similar tributes have been paid by Liverpool's Merseyside neighbors, Everton, as well as Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea.

West Ham reject £50m Mohammed Kudus bid from Tottenham

West Ham United have received an offer from Tottenham Hotspur to sign Mohammed Kudus. The bid was worth £50million and has been turned down but club-to-club talks continue. Kudus is prioritising Spurs if he leaves West Ham and personal terms for the 24-year-old Ghana international are not expected to be an issue. Advertisement The Athletic reported in June that Kudus' contract, which runs until 2028, has a buyout clause that is only active for the first 10 days of July, valued at £80million ($108m) for European clubs, £85m for Premier League sides and £120m for Saudi Arabian teams. The forward has remained on Chelsea's radar, after they stalled on completing a deal to bring him to Stamford Bridge from Ajax in 2023, before West Ham sealed his signature. West Ham signed Kudus for a fee of €41.5million (£35.6m, $48.8m) plus €3m (£2.5m) in add-ons in August 2023, and he immediately became a key part of David Moyes' side, recording 18 goals and 10 assists in 48 appearances during his first season. Utilised in multiple positions across West Ham's frontline, Kudus had a less fruitful 2024-25 campaign, scoring five goals and assisting four in 35 appearances as his side finished 14 in the Premier League. Before joining West Ham, Kudus scored 27 goals in 87 appearances for Ajax, helping the club to consecutive Eredivisie titles in 2021 and 2022. Spurs have been keen to add a forward to their squad during the summer, despite being bolstered by the permanent addition of Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich for €35m, plus €10m in potential bonuses following his loan spell at the club last season. The north London club hoped to persuade Bryan Mbeumo to join new head coach Thomas Frank in joining from Brentford, but the forward has informed Spurs he favours a move to Manchester United. Meanwhile, The Athletic reported Spurs made an enquiry over Bournemouth attacker Antoine Semenyo.

Pallbearers carried the caskets of both brothers from a chapel next door and into the church. Relatives and hundreds of friends and acquaintances, including players of the local Gondomar FC where Jota started playing at age 9, then followed. Portugal's national team coach Roberto Martínez and several other top Portuguese players also attended, including Manchester City duo Bernardo Silva and Rúben Dias and Manchester United's Bruno Fernándes. Advertisement 'These are really, really sad days, as you can imagine,' Martínez said. 'But today we showed we are a large, close family. ... Their spirit will be with us forever.' The bishop of Porto, Manuel Linda, led the funeral mass. The church was filled to capacity and a couple of dozen people followed the service via loudspeaker from outside. Afterwards, the coffins were carried to the cemetery next to the church. Jota, 28, and the 25-year-old Silva were found dead near Zamora in northwestern Spain early Thursday after the Lamborghini they were driving crashed on an isolated stretch of highway just after midnight and burst into flames. Brothers killed in car crash The brothers were reportedly heading to catch a boat from northern Spain to go to England where Jota was to rejoin with Liverpool after a summer break. Spanish police are investigating the cause of the crash, which did not involve another vehicle, they said. They said they believe it could have been caused by a blown tire. Their bodies were repatriated to Portugal after being identified by the family. A wake was held for them on Friday. Jota's death occurred two weeks after he married long-time partner Rute Cardoso while on vacation from a long season where he helped Liverpool win the Premier League. The couple had three children, the youngest born last year. Their loss led to an outpouring of condolences from the soccer world and Portuguese officials. Wilson reported from Barcelona, Spain.
