Man killed in last month's encounter was a govt school cook, officials say; police maintain Maoist link

Indian Express23-06-2025
A 38-year-old tribal man, who was among the seven killed in an encounter between Maoists and security forces at Indravati National Park in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on June 5, worked as a cook in a government school in the local village for over a year, officials said.
Police have said all seven of those killed were Maoists, including the cook, Mahesh Kudiyam. Kudiyam, from Irpagutta village, was a cook at a local school and also a member of the CPI (Maoist)'s National Park area committee, carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head, police said.
His family, however, denied the allegations and told Bastar-based YouTube channel, Bastar Talkies, that he was killed while he was out grazing cattle.
Bijapur Collector Sambit Mishra said an impartial magisterial inquiry was being conducted into the incident.
After the exchange of fire on June 5, the body of a member of the Maoists' Central Committee, Sudhakar alias Gautam, was recovered on the same day. Over the next two days, six more bodies were recovered, including that of the Maoists' Telangana State Committee (TSC) member, Bhaskar, as well as Kudiyam.
An official from the Bijapur education department confirmed to The Indian Express that Kudiyam was a cook at a local school in the National Park area and was hired in September 2023, drawing a salary of Rs 2,000 per month. The official said that due to summer holidays, he was on leave.
An official statement released by Inspector General of Police for Bastar Range, Sundarraj P, also said Kudiyam was a cook at the school, but maintained that he was also a Maoist.
'During inquest proceedings, it was confirmed that Mahesh Kodiyam was a party member of the banned CPI (Maoist) organisation operating in the National Park Area division, and he had clear links with the proscribed group. It has also come to light that Mahesh Kodiyam was working as a cook assistant at the primary school in Irpagutta village. His appointment had been made by the village school management committee, and he was being paid remuneration for this role until March 2025. The circumstances under which Mahesh Kodiyam came into contact with senior Maoist leaders, like Central Committee member Gautam and State Committee member Bhaskar, are currently under investigation. A thorough, impartial, and professional inquiry is being conducted into all aspects of the case.'
The statement also urged individuals 'directly or indirectly associated with the banned CPI (Maoist) organisation to immediately sever all such ties'. It said, 'Continued association with this extremist outfit poses a serious threat not only to public safety and regional peace but also to the lives and future of those involved.'
However, Kudiyam's wife, brothers and some local residents spoke to the Bastar Talkies YouTube channel and claimed he was not a Maoist. 'Kudiyam was just a cook and a peon in the school. On the day of the encounter, he had gone to graze his cattle,' local resident Irma Vela told the channel.
Kudiyam's wife, Sumitra, appealed to the government to provide support to the family as he was the sole breadwinner. The couple had seven children. Sumitra told the channel, 'How will I raise these children by myself?'
One of his four brothers, Ajay, said, 'I have studied up to class 6. I do not know what happened. I worked as a coolie in Andhra. I came (days) later and learnt he had gone to graze buffalo and was killed.'

High court upholds summons to Kangana Rananut in ‘Rs 100' tweet defamation case

Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday dismissed a petition filed by actor-turned-MP Kangana Ranaut challenging her summoning by a Punjab court in a defamation case, making it clear that the magistrate has duly applied mind to the material on record while summoning her. Justice Tribhuvan Dahiya, in a detailed 15-page order, said, "There are specific allegations against the petitioner who is a celebrity, that false and defamatory imputations by her in the retweet have dented the respondent's (Mahender Kaur) reputation and lowered her in her own estimation, as also in the eyes of others. Therefore, filing of the complaint to vindicate her rights cannot be termed mala fide." Ranaut is accused of defaming 73-year-old Mohinder Kaur, a farmer activist, through a tweet during the height of the farmers' protests against the now scrapped farm laws in 2020. Ranaut allegedly misidentified Kaur as Bilkis Bano of Shaheen Bagh fame and implied that such women could be hired to participate in protests for Rs 100. "Such remark, prima facie proves that the intent of the accused was to paint the complainant as a person of dubious integrity who is protesting without any cause and just for financial gains," the high court observed. Ranaut's counsel had contended that the trial court misconstrued provisions of Section 202 of CrPC and argued that she had only re-tweeted content by 'Adhivakta Gautam Yadav', who was not arrayed as an accused. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like She grew up to be America's sweetheart... can YOU guess? Watch More Undo The counsel pleaded that the retweet was made in good faith, without intent to harm Kaur's reputation, and in the absence of mens rea, the magistrate should not have proceeded. The order was passed on Feb 22, 2022. Senior advocate G K Mann, representing the complainant, argued that there was no dispute that Ranaut herself made the defamatory on the face of it retweet, which contains serious allegations against Kaur's character. Mann also said that Ranaut had shown no remorse or tendered any apology, suggesting intentional harm. The bench concluded that the summoning order was passed after due application of mind to the facts and preliminary evidence. The court also noted that it was not the petitioner's case that the retweet was not made by her. Regarding the complaint being filed solely against Ranaut, the judge observed, "Still further, because the respondent has filed a complaint only against the petitioner and not against the person to whom the original tweet has been attributed, in itself cannot be a ground to contend that the complaint is mala fide." 'Extra responsibility' on celebrities "As she (Kangana) holds a position of influence over the masses, she has extra responsibility on her shoulders to verify the truthfulness of the remarks made by her. It is evident from the evidence led by the complainant that the accused (Kangana) made the impugned defamatory remark without going into the truthfulness... She even failed to tender any apology to the complainant after knowing the truth." Justice Tribhuvan Dahiya Complaint was filed in 2021 The defamation complaint was filed on Jan 4, 2021, by Mohinder Kaur of Fatehgarh Jandia village in Bathinda. Kaur initiated the case in Bathinda court against Ranaut for her tweet (which was later deleted) that identified Kaur as Bilkis Bano of Shaheen Bagh fame and claimed such women could be hired for protests for Rs 100. Kaur had provided evidence asserting that Ranaut's words had damaged her image. The farmer stated that her family, owning 12 acres of land, found the accusation of protesting for a mere Rs 100 intolerable. MSID:: 123044276 413 |

Govt orders probe into graft charges against Malaprabha Sugars

Belagavi: The state govt ordered an investigation in connection with the alleged financial misappropriation at Malaprabha Sugar Factory in MK Hubli. The investigation was ordered at the direction of the sugar minister, Shivanand Patil. The state govt appointed enquiry officers to investigate allegations of irregular activities and mismanagement in administrative and financial transactions alleged to have taken place at the Malaprabha Cooperative Sugar Factory in MK Hubli. Enquiry officers were appointed with the approval of textiles, sugarcane development and sugar and agricultural marketing minister Shivanand Patil. Realising the need for a detailed investigation into the alleged irregularities, illegal activities in sugar sales, and procurement of storage materials from 2018-19 to 2022-23, including all legal aspects, the govt ordered a joint investigation. Notices were issued to the persons concerned, seeking an explanation regarding the allegations, but they did not appear before the court. Therefore, the state govt appointed retired district judge SC Ingalagi and retired additional commissioner of the cooperation department SM Kaluti to investigate and instructed them to submit a report within three months. During minister Shivanand Patil's recent surprise visit to the Malaprabha Cooperative Sugar Factory, farmer leaders made serious allegations about the poor condition of the factory. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo The management justified the losses by giving reasons. The negligence of the previous management board and the current management board was said to be the reason for the poor condition of the factory. The management board showed low sugar yield. A large amount of sugar was illegally stored and misused. The farmer leaders explained to the minister that this illegality was detected and a complaint was filed with the deputy commissioner. The chairman of the management board explained to the minister that the reason for the loss of this cooperative sugar factory was the increase in the number of sugar factories in the district and the conflict between farmer leaders. Hundreds of families are living in this factory. The workers appealed to minister Shivanand Patil that the govt should take appropriate measures and come forward to run the factory. When Rudrappa Mokashi's team took over the responsibility of the administration, the factory was in loss. Within three years, the factory's debts were paid off, and it was brought to profit, and Rs 15 crore was deposited in the bank. But farmer leader Basavaraj Mokashi explained that the factory suffered losses due to the mismanagement of those who came to power later. Farmer leaders urged the minister to immediately dismiss the management board responsible for the factory's current state, investigate the irregularities and recover the money, prevent the looting that has taken place despite the loss, run the factory with govt assistance, and appoint a govt official as the managing director of the factory.

Silent protest held in Belagavi demanding release of arrested Kerala nuns

Belagavi: Hundreds of Christians gathered in Belagavi on Friday evening to stage a silent protest rally, demanding the immediate release of two Kerala-based Catholic nuns and a tribal youth, who were recently arrested in Chhattisgarh under controversial circumstances. Organised by the Catholic Association of Belgaum and other Christian organisations, the rally was led by Bishop Rev Dr Derek Fernandes. Around 400 participants, including priests, nuns, seminarians, and laypersons, assembled at the DC Compound at 4.40pm. The peaceful march concluded at the zilla panchayat CEO's office, where a memorandum addressed to the president of India, the prime minister, and the chief minister of Karnataka was submitted to deputy commissioner Mohammed Roshan. The memorandum highlighted the wrongful arrest of the nuns and the youth at Durg Railway Station on July 25 under Section 143 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 4 of the Chhattisgarh Religious Freedom Act (1968), which pertains to religious conversion through force or inducement. They were accompanying three adult tribal women, aged 18–19, from Narayanpur to Agra for nursing jobs. The women all signed parental consent letters and carried valid identification. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your IQ Is 140 If You Can Answer 10 of These Questions Correctly. It is alleged that the charges were politically and communally motivated. Investigations and family statements later confirmed that the women travelled willingly and without any coercion. Speaking at the rally, Bishop Derek Fernandes condemned the arrests as 'unjust and frivolous,' asserting that Catholics are not involved in forced conversions. He also decried the physical assault on the nuns and warned against the rise of communal violence. "We demand the immediate release of the innocent and an end to baseless persecution. The govt must protect minority rights and uphold India's secular values," Bishop Fernandes stated. Deputy commissioner Mohammed Roshan, who received the memorandum, assured the gathering that appropriate action would be taken. Other notable participants included Rev Fr Philip Kutty, Rev Nooroddin Mulla, Clara Fernandes, Louis Rodrigues, Fr Pramod Kumar, Sr Pastor Ankalgi, and Sister Lourdes Joseph.
