PM Modi hails Kalaburagi's jowar rotti initiative
Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his monthly radio address Mann Ki Baat aired on Sunday praised the Kalaburagi district administration for its innovative initiative to empower rural women by bringing women roti producers onto a common cooperative platform and selling the rotis under the Kalaburagi Rotti brand, a jowar-based flatbread, turning a local staple into a recognised regional brand.
'The achievements of Kalaburagi's women in Karnataka are equally remarkable. They have transformed jowar roti into a well-known brand. Over 3,000 rotis are being made every day at their cooperative. The aroma of these rotis is no longer limited to their village. A special counter is already opened in Bengaluru. Orders are coming in through online food platforms. Kalaburagi's roti is now making its way into the kitchens in big cities. This initiative has had a tremendous impact on these women. Their income has increased significantly,' Mr. Modi said.
Meanwhile, responding to the Prime Minister's praise, Minister Priyank Kharge, who hails from Kalaburagi, expressed delight, but emphasised the role of the State government behind the success of the initiative. Writing on X, Mr. Kharge said, 'What the Prime Minister described in Mann Ki Baat is actually the result of our Kaam Ki Baat, a testament to the efforts of the Congress government.'
Meanwhile, speaking to The Hindu, Deputy Commissioner Fouzia Taranum, the key official behind the initiative, credited the success to the over 1,000 women who are at the heart of the project.
'The women have done an outstanding job. Their dedication and commitment are truly commendable. The real credit belongs to them. We are now planning to open franchise outlets in Hyderabad, Bidar, Pune, Delhi and other cities. I am hopeful that these plans will materialise soon,' she said.

Now he stands with the Congress that insulted JP," Paswan said. The Hajipur MP also hit out at RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, mocking his promise to bring change in 20 months if elected. "He should first return the land he got in exchange for jobs during his father Lalu Prasad's tenure as railway minister," he said. Paswan recalled his 2020 slogan 'Bihar First, Bihari First' and said it had caused discomfort to many back then. "Now that I'm returning to Bihar, their discomfort has only grown. NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday recalled the 'dark chapter of Emergency' imposed 50 years ago and urged citizens to remain vigilant to safeguard the Constitution. In his monthly Mann Ki Baat radio address, the PM quoted three prominent politicians from different ideologies, including two former prime ministers, to showcase how people from all walks had joined hands against imposition of Emergency in 1975. Modi played archival audio recordings of speeches by former prime ministers Morarji Desai and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and former home minister Jagjivan Ram, recounting the atrocities faced by people during the Emergency period. The PM quoted Desai as saying, 'The oppression that happened for two years... reached its peak when Emergency was imposed on people and people were treated inhumanely.' Modi added, 'This is the voice of the former PM of the country, Morarji Bhai Desai, who spoke about the Emergency in a brief but very clear manner.' 'You can imagine what that period was like. Those who imposed Emergency not only murdered our Constitution but also had the intention to keep the judiciary as their slave,' he said. The PM noted that over one lakh people were jailed, and politicians like George Fernandes were chained, with many enduring 'severe torture' under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA).
