MPs decry 'unlivable' Parliament Lodges
Minister of State for Interior, Talal Chaudhry, found himself in an uncomfortable and difficult position on Friday as several senators expressed strong frustration over the deteriorating condition of the Parliament Lodges during a meeting of the Senate House Committee. Lawmakers, visibly upset, raised multiple complaints with the minister, criticising the appalling state of infrastructure, lack of maintenance, and overall mismanagement at the lodges. Chaudhry too voiced his concerns, saying, "I'm personally troubled by a female parliamentarian living upstairs who has installed water taps in the stairwell. Someone, please have those taps removed." It was disclosed during the meeting that not even a single light bulb has been replaced in two years, while a former female senator left Parliament Lodges without paying Rs1.7 million in outstanding electricity and gas bills. The Senate House Committee meeting was chaired by Deputy Chairman Senate Syedaal Khan Nasar. During the session, Minister Talal Chaudhry responded to senators' questions. Capital Development Authority (CDA) officials briefed the committee, stating they had received 48 requests from parliamentarians for repairs, AC installations, and other work at the lodges, claiming work is underway and being carried out in line with PPRA rules. They added that 12-13 suites have been made habitable. However, Senator Kamil Ali Agha rejected the CDA's presentation, calling it "completely false." He alleged that no actual work is being done. Chairman Nasir said that action would be taken against those who haven't completed work in the past 16 months. Senator Poonjo Mal Bheel too complained that the sanitation system in Parliament Lodges is practically nonexistent, with visible filth everywhere. While the CDA DG is polite, he said, their performance is "zero." Minister Talal Chaudhry added that the Interior Minister has already suggested to the National Assembly Speaker that if CDA cannot do the job, the responsibility should be handed over to another agency. Work on 104 lodges is about to begin, and if funds are released, it will be completed in six months. "Contractors haven't been paid in two years. Following the Speaker's instructions, all senators' lodges will be repaired simultaneously. The tender for 104 lodges will be issued within two days, and lodges must be vacated for four months to carry out the work," he said. Senator Khalil Tahir Sindhu raised another concern, stating that his lodge was given to a fellow female senator at the request of the Deputy Chairman. She vacated the premises overnight without paying utility bills worth Rs1.7m — Rs1.3m for electricity and Rs470,000 for gas. "I can't pay this bill," he added. Chairman Nasir responded that she is the daughter of a former Deputy Chairman of the Senate and that he personally asked her to clear the dues.

Opposition to move no-confidence motion against Gandapur once majority is secured: Kundi
Listen to article Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has said that the opposition would move a no-confidence motion against Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur the moment it secures a majority in the provincial assembly. 'The day one extra member joins us, we can move a vote of no-confidence, ' he said. He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after a Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) delegation met Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman at his Islamabad residence on Friday to deliberate on a joint strategy for the upcoming Senate elections in K-P. During the meeting, the two parties discussed possible cooperation in contesting the Senate polls. The meeting highlighted the need for coordination among opposition parties to counter the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the province. Senior PPP leader Khursheed Shah said that the elections were imminent and that both parties intended to honour previously agreed arrangements. 'Every party has its mandate, and we have had a longstanding relationship with Maulana Fazlur Rehman,' he noted. Addressing the media after the meeting, Kundi highlighted the PPP's electoral targets in upper house elections, saying the party was aiming for five Senate seats in the province. 'Our goal is for Maulana Fazl's group to secure one general seat, while PPP will contest a reserved seat,' he said. When asked about the potential for political manoeuvring in the upcoming polls, Kundi responded, 'The PPP will try its best to avoid horse-trading,' while expressing hope that the former Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) alliance would contest the elections jointly, saying, 'We are trying to move forward together.' Touching on the broader political and security landscape, the K-P governor criticised the PTI's governance in the province, challenging the party to 'name a single stadium or public facility they have built.' Commenting on the deteriorating law and order situation in K-P, he said, 'Extremists usually come out after Asr prayers in the province,' alluding to growing militant activity in recent months. Kundi also addressed Thursday's tragic incident in Balochistan, where nine passengers were killed after being identified and separated based on their identity cards. He said the entire nation must unite to restore peace. He called out Indian involvement in terrorist activities inside Pakistan, stating New Delhi had intensified subversive actions following its military setbacks. 'Eighty per cent of the terrorism in Pakistan is originating from Afghan soil,' he said, warning that if Afghanistan continued allowing its territory to be used by hostile powers like Israel and India, it would be difficult to maintain peaceful ties. 'Afghanistan must ensure that its land is not used by external forces against Pakistan,' he added.

PPP's Gilani acquitted in 9 more TDAP cases
The Federal Anti-Corruption Court has acquitted Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani in nine cases related to the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) mega corruption scandal. The court announced its verdict on Thursday on Gilani's acquittal pleas. The PPP leader, who served as the country's prime minister between 2008 and 2012, appeared in court during the hearing along with other co-accused. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had registered 26 cases in relation to the scandal. Gilani had already been acquitted in three of those cases previously. Speaking to the media after the hearing, the Senate chairman said he had been facing these cases for 12 years. "Some of those who were then students are now appearing as prosecutors in the case. Delay in justice is equivalent to denial of justice," he said. Gilani's lawyer Farooq H. Naek, speaking to the media, said a total of 26 cases were registered in 2013-14 despite the fact that similar allegations were levelled in all of them. "Yousuf Raza Gilani was accused of receiving Rs5 million [as kickback], not directly but allegedly through a person named Zubair. No witness ever claimed that Gilani personally received the money. The court had already acquitted him in three cases. Now, nine more acquittals have been granted," he said. Naek said the FIA's appeal against the acquittals was pending in a high court.
