Call to shorten the length of school summer holidays

Yahoo7 hours ago
The summer school holidays have kicked off, with students across the country set to enjoy six weeks of freedom and hopefully, plenty of sunshine. However, there's a growing debate over whether this lengthy break is beneficial, with factors such as educational attainment, childcare costs for parents, and increased screen time on tablets and mobile phones all playing into the discussion about potentially shortening the longest period of leisure that British youngsters receive.
Have your say! Should the school holidays be shortened? Do you think it would help pupils to get higher grades? Is it worth it to reduce the burden on working parents? Comment below, and join in on the conversation.
Earlier this year, Ofsted chief Sir Martyn Oliver suggested it might be time to reassess the duration of the school holidays. Speaking to LBC, he said: "I think 190 days of children going in out of 365 - I think the question should be 'is that long enough'?".

Sir Martyn warned that pupils could experience "dysregulation" - the loss of good habits, discipline, and structure built up over the academic year. This change could particularly impact vulnerable or disadvantaged children.
As part of its recovery strategy following the Covid-19 pandemic, the Tory government contemplated reducing the summer holidays to help students recover from two years of disruption, but this idea was never implemented.
Warnings have been issued that children's screen time is set to soar during the summer holidays. A study by Vodafone, as reported by the Daily Star, suggests that youngsters could spend up to four hours a day on mobile devices.
This represents a 42% increase in scrolling time compared to when children are in school, according to the report. Parents' concerns range from the potential for devices to disrupt sleep and negatively impact their child's mental health, to the risk of exposure to harmful content.
The six-week summer break can pose challenges for working parents who need to organise childcare. Reducing the length of the summer holiday could ease this burden and prove more cost-effective for families.
However, such a move could have repercussions for the traditional summer family getaway. Condensing the demand for flights, hotels, and long car journeys into a shorter period could lead to disruption and price hikes, with the cost of family holidays already a contentious issue - not to mention the importance of quality family time.

Beach visitors warned not to pet cliffside goats

People have been warned that cliffside goat enclosures at a tourist hotspot are "not a petting zoo" after visitors were seen stroking the animals. Bournemouth Goats, a group responsible for managing the herd living next to the town's beaches, issued the warning on Facebook after two people were photographed petting the animals inside a fence. The animals were introduced as a natural solution to control cliffside vegetation, replacing the need for petrol-powered mowers. Herder Tanya Bishop said the fencing was there for a reason – to protect both the public and the goats. "They are not pets, and approaching them is not safe," she said. "The cliffs are dangerous. One wrong step could lead to serious injury – or worse." Ms Bishop explained that the male goats were not castrated, which made them more territorial and unpredictable. "They may look calm, but unfamiliar humans in their space can cause stress, panic, and herd disruption - especially during kidding season or when young ones are present. "Stress increases the risk of injury, weakened immunity, and changes in feeding patterns." The group is concerned that if someone is injured, the goats could ultimately suffer the consequences. "The second someone does get hurt, the goats are the ones who pay the price," Ms Bishop said. In addition to the risk posed by the animals, the terrain itself is hazardous. The cliffs are steep and unstable, with three landslips recorded last winter alone - one of which occurred near goats live on the East Cliff. In the past rangers have urged people to contact them rather than the emergency services if they spot any problems. The plea came after firefighters were called to the cliffs when a goat got its head stuck in a fence. You can follow BBC Dorset on Facebook, X (Twitter), or Instagram. King in Caithness to mark series of nuclear industry anniversaries

The King has arrived in Caithness in the north of Scotland to mark a series of anniversaries linked to the nuclear industry. On arrival at Scrabster Harbour, Charles met the crew of the Pacific Heron, a second-generation purpose-built nuclear transport vessel. He unveiled a plaque for the ship. Charles also met local sea cadets and Royal National Lifeboat Institution volunteers from the area. The unveiling on Jubilee Pier came ahead of a reception in the nearby Fish Market Hall, where the King will later spend time meeting staff from the nuclear industry and local community members from Thurso. The visit was hosted by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority to mark the 70th anniversary of the Dounreay Nuclear site, the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Pacific Nuclear Transport Limited (PNTL) company, and the 20th anniversary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
