Batang Lupar 1 Bridge 84 pct complete, set to open by Gawai 2026, says Uggah
KUCHING (July 30): The Batang Lupar 1 Bridge has reached 84 per cent completion and is expected to be operational by the Gawai celebration in 2026, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
He said despite technical challenges, including an issue at pier number 52, the contractor had assured the matter would be resolved soon.
'We discussed about the bridge being usable by Gawai 2026. We hope all outstanding issues will be resolved and we will continue to visit and monitor the progress of this project,' he said in a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report after a working visit to the project site in Sebuyau today.
According to the report, the 4.8km bridge forms part of the Sarawak government's ongoing effort to strengthen coastal road connectivity and will fully replace the long-standing ferry service between Sebuyau and Triso.
The RM848.7 million project began construction on Jan 7, 2021, and is one of 16 major bridge projects currently underway across Sarawak.
Uggah, who is also the State Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, said the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak is actively on the ground to assess and discuss any arising issues.
'Our aim is to minimise the number of delayed or problematic projects in the state,' he said.
He also revealed another major bridge project has commenced at Miri Marina, with a total cost of RM6.53 billion.
'The government's aspiration is for all these investments to have a direct impact on the state's economic growth through improved infrastructure,' he said.
Earlier, Uggah was briefed on the project status by JKR Sarawak director Dr Cassidy Morris, along with the technical leadership from Perbena Emas and the Sebuyau District Office.

13MP: Strengthening road network along Malaysian Borneo-Indonesia border
KUCHING: The plan to upgrade the road network along the Sabah-Sarawak-Kalimantan border, as announced during the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), is viewed as a continuation of the government's efforts to develop a high-quality cross-border road system between Malaysian Borneo and Indonesia. Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said that the Sarawak government had long proposed the construction of a border road, and welcomed the federal government's commitment to the initiative under the 13MP. "It was indeed proposed early on that a comprehensive plan be developed for the border road. "Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has already announced several related projects, including the Sarawak-Sabah Link Road Phases 1 and 2 (SSLR 1 and SSLR 2)," he said, when met by reporters at the 37th Kuching City Day celebration today. Uggah, who is also Sarawak infrastructure and port development minister, said that the state Public Works Department is preparing to implement projects approved by the federal government, including a new alignment currently being finalised. "This border road project had previously been announced with a RM1 billion allocation. "We are now reviewing the planning, and discussions with the relevant parties in Kuala Lumpur have already taken place," he added. According to Uggah, the project will span several strategic areas along the border, with planned connections to existing major road networks, such as the Pan Borneo Highway, SSLR 1 and SSLR 2. During the tabling of the 13MP yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the implementation of the infrastructure project as part of the government's broader efforts to enhance cross-border connectivity and economic integration. Meanwhile, on a separate matter, Uggah said that the air quality across Sarawak remained at a good to moderate level, based on Air Pollution Index (API) readings taken yesterday and this morning, amid concerns over the haze situation. Uggah, who is also the chairman of the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee, said that all divisional and district-level disaster committee chairmen have been instructed to activate their respective response teams, to strengthen monitoring efforts and take immediate action in the event of a fire. "The Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) has also cancelled all open burning permits for the past two weeks," he added.

The Deputy Premier said the state is working to improve border roads, particularly those linking to neighbouring Kalimantan, Indonesia. 'This was proposed earlier to ensure proper planning for border roads. The Premier (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) has also announced several projects, including Phase 2 of the Sarawak-Sabah Link Road (SSLR) and other highway developments. 'So, we thank the federal government. JKR (Public Works Department) is ready to implement all projects approved by the federal government for Sarawak,' he told reporters after officiating at the 37th Kuching City Day celebration on behalf of the Premier at Pangkalan Sapi, Petra Jaya today. On the proposed locations for the border roads, Uggah said several areas have been identified considering Sarawak's existing and expanding road networks. Premier: DBKU, MBKS must embrace digital economy vision to stay relevant

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stressed local authorities must evolve in line with rapid technological advancements. 'I urge DBKU and MBKS to embrace this aspiration so they remain significant and relevant to the digital needs of the people. 'They must transform their engagement and public perception, including in terms of policy, delivery, monitoring, and evaluation,' he in a speech for the 37th Kuching City Day celebration at Pangkalan Sapi, Petra Jaya today. He said the government places strong emphasis on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, and 5G to boost productivity, improve efficiency, drive innovation, and enhance quality of life in Sarawak. Highlighting the importance of city councils in this transformation, Abang Johari said DBKU and MBKS can play a vital role in implementing the state's Sustainability Blueprint 2030. 'On May 29, we launched the Sustainability Blueprint 2030, which outlines 10 strategic thrusts, 48 strategies, and 111 actionable plans to drive Sarawak's transition to a green and low-carbon economy. 'Sarawak is determined to lead Malaysia and the region in climate action and sustainable development. This is not Sarawak's journey as this is our contribution to the future generations. 'As for DBKU and MBKS, both of the cities can play a critical role in implementing the Sarawak Sustainable Blueprint 2030 by aligning the policies, urban planning and community programmes. This blueprint may also be integrated into Local Development Plans, Low-Carbon Initiatives in Urban Areas, Waste and Water Management Innovations, Community Education and Engagement, Nature-Based and Carbon Projects, Green Economy and Innovation, and Digital and Smart City,' he said. Abang Johari also underscored the importance of community involvement in local council initiatives, saying citizens have a role in shaping their surroundings.
